fic below the cut
boots fell one after the other on a well tread dirt path; each forward push adding more weight to the shoulders of all five squad members. irina knew this wasnt an ideal move — bringing three fresh faced rookies (and gwin) on a dangerous rescue mission — but for all she knew, her group was the only one close enough to respond in time. worst came to worst… she didnt want to consider the option, telling herself that she would find it in her to overcome. balance shifted on the trail, a slight incline signaling yet another checkpoint of note, like the fork in the road a couple miles back. this one, though, was the last one before they reached julians distress call location. his life was running on a burning fuse — if irina was lucky, she would still have enough time to get there before it was snuffed out. grunts from behind her echoed through the increasingly narrow cliff faces, down the throat on the way to the belly of the beast.
“we… we almost there?”
poor gwin was spent, having exhausted his energy by showing off to the rookies earlier in the mission, opting to climb up a steep section of terrain rather than taking the long way.
“gwin, id suggest focusing on breathing rather than sputtering out questions. we need you conscious for whats up ahead.”
he took those words to heart, not responding to irinas words with his own, but by breathing steadily. despite his… unique tendencies… she was at least a bit glad to have him along, if only for an example of generally what not to do. with the rookies, they were new. mistakes were bound to happen, so she neednt be too stern to them. most of the purpose of the original mission was just about working as a team, not any particular combat skills, more so a way to break the ice, get them used to being in a squad, feel out how theyd like to operate. irina had been spectating them while fighting, and already had an idea of the roles each one could take up; jill was the most headstrong, someone who would thrive in the commanding front lines. leland was an… interesting case. he had a very large build, one fit for heavy weaponry made for getting in and tearing up, but he usually hung back, kept his distance. added on was the fact he barely spoke a word, but followed orders without resistance. if someone called the shots for him, and had the space to work at range, he would be set. then there was melrose. poor thing was best suited to work behind a screen, away from the field altogether. irina would catch it trembling after an encounter every single time, which would help explain its struggles with firearm handling. something behind its eyes suggested it was still unaware of the mim bodies everyone inhabited, a fear like no other coming up in dangerous situations, a fear that was quelled in most others by the knowledge of replica bodies, built sturdier and easier to fix. now definitely wasnt the time to bring it up, as there was already one major pressing matter: julian and his attacker. he had identified the suspect as “she” and not a “they” or “it”, to this was a case of someone, not something. was it another serial killer? she had already seen her fill, too many to count. past experiences bubbled up; crime scenes, bodies, witnesses, suspects, her partn…
“shit.”
it came out in an exhale, too subtle for any of her squadmates to notice, but memories blared in her head over a speaker system. it wouldnt be her, it couldnt… she wasnt supposed to be out in the field, not after… she didnt dare bring it to her mind. one day, she was there. working alongside irina and whoever else was available, a blade with a fearless determination. no job was too much, no task too big. after a long day, the group would go out for some drinks, grub, and fresh air that didnt have hostile creatures around every corner. but then… she was gone. not suddenly, there were signs of change, less conversation, more time in the field or security systems. by the time everything was over, it felt like there was just a ghost left. what used to be nights together over at the barracks turned to brief glances at the main terminal turned to… nothing. irina held that nothing in her heart, a void of something that once was, a gap that couldnt be filled. further up the path… one foot in front of the other… it wasnt something to think about at the current time, at least she hoped. she just had to push forward, and things would right themselves when she got to the tent, when she could have an answer. a shadow drew near, just barely coming into view. it was flat to the ground, a lumpy pile with no distinct features, at least from that distance. irina dropped to a crouch, holding her hand out behind her to stop gwin from pushing ahead, then turned to him and the rookies.
“ill go ahead. wait twenty paces then follow behind me. anything happens to any of you, shout.”
with that, irina set off on her own, coming up on the pile; the decision to go alone first immediately paid off as she saw what it really was. blood, flesh and bone arranged in a neat stack, limbs spilling over one another as green blood leaked from every possible source. definians. just barely inhuman enough to say for sure — something about the faces set off an uncanny feeling, frozen in their death masks of pain and anger. irina was on her way back to the group when she heard a distant murmur, an even, deep tone. her fears had been all but confirmed, but now was absolutely not the time to lose her cool. as she returned to her squad, gwin gave irina an expecting look.
“gwin, we need to approach this very carefully. ill need you to protect the rookies. i can handle everything else, but if a fight breaks out, im counting on you to step in and get things under control. understand?”
he nodded, barely able to contain his enthusiasm. irina could not care less about the moment relating to gwin, as she took off at a brisk pace towards the murmuring. lo and behold, the fog parted to reveal the tent, no occupants visible from the side they were coming from. irina took a deep breath, readied her rifle, and darted in front of the entrance, but nothing had prepared her for the scene inside.
“y… you…””

fic starts below the cut
dense fog rolled over the plains of western primordia, cloaking the landscape from the constant surveillance of what used to be a bright, bustling city. heads ducked down in the slight drizzle didnt stop to notice the overwhelming quiet, a moment of rest for a tireless colony. the early mornings were among the most peaceful in new los angeles, bar a few hotheaded soldiers eager to start the day off right; straight to the field. early birds not intent on getting the adrenaline pumping would sit around the cafe, getting a cup of coffee and pastry in before the day began proper. off to the northwest, by the bihano water purification plant, things were much less relaxed.
“one more down, come on! we need to keep this momentum!”
bullets flew, tracing lines in the haze before landing as an exclamation point into the carapaces of a number of rogue blattas threatening security. heading the assault was a powerful voice of irina barking orders to the four riflemen she commanded as she dove into the fray of combat, cutting into the horde of insectoids. under her watch was gwin, another blade with some good experience under his belt, and three rookies: jill, leland, and melrose. immediately noticeable was the vast difference in combat skill, even ignoring the expert swordsmanship in irina. gwin used his rifle as an extension of himself, keeping a hard lock on weak spots and fluidly changing mags when his current ran dry. he handled his gun with brutal efficiency, every shot counted, but no time was spared with lining up his next. hours on the firing range and his sink or swim training with elma had him forged into a machine. standing beside him were the rookies, and theyd not even touched the flame. jill piloted her gun as if it were a garden hose; aiming wildly around while the kickback took the reins. leland was at least a little more controlled, but after every single shot, needed to readjust and fully steady the iron sights before letting off another, taking the time that the others used to fully empty a mag to shoot just twice. melrose steadied the gun well enough, and hit shots every once and a while, but fumbled with the hardware at every turn. itd get the magazine release stuck just at the end, jamming the thing, or struggle getting the charging handle cocked. irina knew she would be wasting time trying to help them in the heat of battle, leaving the others open to attack as she focused on a single rookie, so set herself on picking up the attention of all the hostile xenos so the newbies had time to figure things out on their own. hell, way back when, she used to be green as the plains, managing to eject a fully loaded magazine of its rounds while trying to get the damned thing in her rifle. times change, but people dont. thered always be someone to struggle, and it was her duty to make sure a helping hand was always within reach. said hand was busy plunging a blade into the final blattas thorax, one final chirp signaling its death. irina turned back to her teammates, giving them a nod.
“nice work, you guys. why dont we go over some need to knows about fighting as a team while we head back. you lot have some promise, but theres still edges that need to be sanded down.”
murmurs of agreement came from the four, so began tracing back their steps to the city. fog loomed all around, leaving visibility limited and senses cloudy. thankfully, a trailblazing effort made going back the way they came simple, well, for now. melrose naturally fell into place at the back of the line, which would help it feel more safe, but the dense haze made it feel as if it were surrounded by things ready to up and snatch it for lagging behind. shivers prickled at it, hinting at a set of slender claws just hovering behind it, giddy at how easy a target it was. fear took the best of it, snapping its head around to check its six for any threat, but found none… that it knew of. the rest of the group busied themselves with receiving knowledge from their captain.
“listen, i know theres five of us, but that makes it even more important to take up a role and stick to it. the best thing a team can be is coordinated. its not ideal for the lot of you to be in the back, because someones always going to be a target. this time, it was me. but when im not there, you wont have anything between you and the enemy. youll need to step up and take charge, which means getting close and personal. get familiar with using your melee, whatever it is, because otherwise its just a dead weight in your kit.”
gwin decided to chime in with some advice of his own.
“you know, unless youve already ironed out your team composition… my squad sticks pretty firm to specific weapons, like me with my rifle.”
he puffed his chest out at that last part, boasting about his ranged prowess.
“well, gwin, what if youre ambushed? you get caught at the front with nowhere to back up?”
it was immediately noted irina wasnt as soft with gwin as she was with melrose and the others, taking the kid gloves off with her opposition.
“i, uh… we…”
“or an enemy with an armored carapace that your shots bounce off?”
gwin stumbled in both words and stride, needing to stop and plant himself after tripping over a gnarled root.
“irina, i… its… you know what it is. i…”
“then you should know as well as i that its not going to help the rookies. you have your own personal reasons, but i have to get our new blades suited for combat.”
gwin fell silent, her stern words put up a brick wall in front of him. nobody said a word, only the rhythmic thumping of boots on ground were present, alongside the mysterious noises echoing through the fog. melrose could picture the beasts beyond the mist: huge, writhing tendrils snaking through the brush, sharp claws slicing into the dirt with each step, gnarled teeth ready to snap shut on their prey, countless other appendages built for the kill. up ahead, breaking through the wall of haze, was the shadowy outline of a tent, belonging to one of the base camps the group had passed along the way. this was the first one to appear, which marked the final quarter of the trek coming from nla, a signal of the final stretch, a motivator to keep up a final push. now, however, it provided the opposite effect — still a landmark — but one that showed how much there was left in the trudge. irina halted; twisting around to directly address the group.
“why dont we take a breather here? itll give us some time to rest and refuel before setting off again. we still have a long road ahead of us, and who knows whatll pop up between here and new la? best be prepared.”
unsurprisingly, the group consensus was a unanimous yes, so all five of the team changed trajectory to the rest area, where rations would be eaten and canteens sipped on the admittedly not so comfy cots. melrose wasnt particularly hungry, so offered to keep watch just inside the tent. it took a seat on the pop up stool that stood guard for all the beds and cabinets inside, with a clear — as clear as could be in the current weather — view of the trail leading up to it and the surrounding area. all it could see was the rolling fog; light playing tricks on it with shadowy spots that made it seem as if it were staring someone, or something, right in the eyes. melrose tried brushing it off as it being tired and on edge, but there was… something there. there had to be, it looked nothing like the mist around it. a dark blotch creeping through the grass became more and more noticeable, but still indistinguishable.
“i… irina-a…”
“yeah? is something outside?”
irina was on point as always, settling next to where melrose sat and popping a squat to get a closer eyeline to it. she noticed the blotch after a quick scan, pointing it out to confirm that was what melrose was looking at.
“you dont have to worry about that. just some docile wildlife. although…”
melrose looked over at irina, her face scrunched up a bit.
“i dont… that doesnt appear to be an animal we have logged into our primordia database.”
“w… well, wh… wh… what is it?”
“we have two solid options, that being a new species we havent run across — maybe a critter that only likes going out in the fog, or it blew in from elsewhere.”
as the two continued observation, that answer became clear, but introduced new questions that wouldnt be so easy.
slim but sturdy limbs slinked in and out of the brush, blades of grass bowing underneath each decisive paw as the animal grew nearer, becoming more visible through the mist. deep purple fur glimmered in the minimal light, beautifully smooth along the back of the creature.
“thats…”
it looked up at the source of the noise, beady eyes staring at irina.
“oh god…”
now more visible, the animal — a fox — was covered in… something. the cobalt blue stuck to the fox, matting its fur and staining everything it touched.
“w… what is… it?”
“blood. our blood.”
melrose was just as fixated on irina as the fox was, but with a horrified curiosity.
“did… did it kill someone?”
“no, theyre harmless. to us, at least. but that doesnt change the fact that someone is hurt, at best.”
at best. if the best was a grievous injury, melrose shuddered to think what the worst was. despite its best efforts, its mind came up with various images of the potential scene. a blue field, limbs sticking out as crops of the garden; the harvest was plentiful. even after the reaping, vultures gathered about the freshly painted ground to feast on what remained. the scarecrows could do nothing but watch their sanctuary fall into ruin. a radio crackled to life, sending melrose back into its own body, saved from the visions.
“this is julian from bihano grasslands base camp! we’re under attack! i repeat, we're—”
the fox darted back into the fog, its job as an omen fulfilled. all melrose thought was to follow the cobalt stained grass; find truth in the fog. it stood up, but irina grabbed its hand, pulling it back down to reality.
“no. we need more info. dont do anything rash.”
she hit a button on the radio to respond.
“this is irina akulov. whats your status?”
by now, the other three squad members had been alerted to the situation, albeit with much less context. gwin had approached and was understandably a little shook.
“attack? wait, who? where? we should go, now! come on!”
irina huffed, holding her hand up in front of the eager soldier, signaling him to stand down.
his voice was much quieter, like he was hiding. what hit melrose the most was the “she”. he knew who was hunting him.
“whats going on over there? whos trying to kill you?”
nothing but deafeningly quiet radio static. irina smacked the comm device in frustration.
“hey! answer me!”
it felt suspended in time, everything still. paused in anticipation, seemingly forever. then,
“i… i-im scared…”
melrose wasnt sure if it had said that, or the radio.
“hang on! im on my way, i have a-”
before irina could continue, the feed cut out. she gave the device another solid hit, to no avail.
“dammit! his line is dead. we have to go get him, we arent far from his base camp, maybe half an hour. get up, everyone! ill lead.”
melrose stood alongside the others, but had knocked the pop up stool over, sending it crashing into one of the bedframes. its face burned red, shamefully turning around and standing the seat back up. thankfully, the group was preoccupied and paid no mind to the blunder, gwin starting an interrogation on his team captain.
“where is he? do we know how many hostiles? what are the casualties? does…”
“shut it, gwin! you have to slow down. now, if youll listen to me while we make our way over, i can explain the situation. that clear?”
he nodded without any resistance.
“alright. now, everyone have their gear?”
affirmative all around.
“good. follow me.”
irina turned to the fog and made at a brisk pace, almost disappearing from view when melrose took its spot at the back of the line; being the runt once again. one thought mulled over and over in its brain, an itch inside the nerves making its teeth grind and fingers lock around its sidearm: something in the mist. something near, something hiding, ready to strike when it least expected. melrose shook its head in an effort to keep the monsters away, but knew it was futile going deeper and deeper into the fog, into a fate unknown…

the number of times its watched smash bros "adding more characters from each franchise" and heard the phrase "now i dont have much/any experience with x series" has been too many. yes specifically xenoblade, but other series too.
its also very noticeable which series these people DO care about, cause theyll bring in some more niche picks or have very tight reasoning for a specific character, and then theyll make a statement about another series that makes it sound like they just read a plot and character summary 10 minutes before the video. either that or "i dont want to include x character cause theyd just be a joke character" and "y character would be great as a little joke character for fans" both appearing in the video.
Very limited amounts of food, water, and medicine are allowed in.
