The sound of the world playing as you lay comfortably on the outdoor lounge chair with a knitted blanket covering your legs. You stare at the sky, hoping that everything your senses are picking up would distract you from your sullen thoughts. However, the hope begin to chip away as the thoughts continue to grow, engulfing your mind and —
“Hey.”
You turned your head to the voice that broke you from your trance. You took a deep breath at the sight of Chris leaning on the door panel with his hands in his pockets.
“Hey,” you softly replied as it was the only thing you were able to say with your current state of mind. There was brief moment of silence as you both stared at one another with no words that could change the current atmosphere. Sensing the awkwardness of the silence, you broke your gaze and resumed staring at the spacious backyard of the house you both shared. You tried to appear relax before Chris, not wanting him to pick up your downcast mood.
But Chris knew you too well.
Observing how distracted you were trying to mask yourself before him, he carefully and gently approached you. Starting to sense the type of atmosphere that he was walking into, he gently brushed his hand along your hair. You tilt your head back to follow the comfort of his hand with your eyes eventually meeting his gaze again.
“Hey,” Chris greeted again with a soft expression, his fingers brushing away strands of your hair from your face. You couldn’t help but return the expression with a sad smile. He nod his head to the side, gesturing you to make room in the chair you were occupying, which you obliged. His body snuggled up against yours as your head laid comfortably at the crook of his neck, taking in his scent. You could feel one of his hand stroke your hair as the other brought your hand to his chest. You closed your eyes, directing all your senses to soak up Chris’ warm comforting presence.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Chris gently asked, breaking the moment of silence you both were sharing. You pulled your head away from the crook of his neck and stared into his eyes, thinking for a moment whether to take up on his offer. But your found yourself shaking your head.
“No,” you whispered.
“Okay,” he responded back, giving a kiss on your forehead before letting your head tuck into the crook of his neck again. The sound of the world playing in your ears again but with the addition to the sound of Chris’ steady breathing.
“Thank you,” you said, breaking the silence agin.
“For what?” He asked. You took a deep breath, breathing in his comforting scent.
“For not pressing about it,” you answered. He hummed in response, bringing a soft smile to your face. You didn’t need to talk about it with Chris, as his presence was comforting enough to pull you away from your sullen thoughts.

Platonic Friendship
*Author's Note: I feel like Bucky deserves a good platonic friendship with a woman. I got this idea after watching Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and seeing Katy and Shang-Chi just being completely platonic and absolute besties.

It was just another day for James Buchanan "Bucky" Barnes. Enjoying his morning walks to clear his mind, and then going over to help Sam and his family with their business. It was just another day in Louisiana. But something caught his eye during his morning walks.
“Welcome!”
Bucky turned his head to the direction of the voice, not realizing he had completely sidetracked in his usual routine. Instead of smelling the Louisiana waters, he was smelling roasted coffee beans and warm pastries.
“Anything I can help you with?” the woman at the counter asked him with a warm smile. Lost for words, his eyes peered back to what had caught his eyes. The woman’s eyes follow the direction of his eyes and understood what may have caught his attention.
“Like the books on the shelf?” she asked him as she continue to do her usual morning tasks at the café. “You’re more than welcome to read them.”
“Including that copy of the Hobbit?” Bucky was able to ask. The woman paused what she was doing and smiled at his question.
“Yea,” she answered as she walked out of the counter space. “You’re the first person to ask that. Usually people assumed it was just a prop on the shelf.”
She went over to the book shelf and brought the moss green book down to give Bucky a closer look.
“Believe it or not, this is the first edition of the Hobbit,” she revealed as she gently stroked the front cover and handed it to Bucky to hold. “It’s really hard to find and expensive to get.”
Bucky softly smiled at her comment as he admire the book in his hand with nostalgia. It may have been hard and expensive to get in her eyes, but to him it was easy to get when it first released in 1937.
“And you’re okay with me reading it?” Bucky asked her as he gently opened the book, drinking in the details of it and how it was just the same as how he first opened a copy back in the day.
“Yea,” she answered as she head towards the back of the counter. “It’s a book. It should be read and enjoyed.”
“Again, you’re welcome to read the books here in the café…” she said as continued her morning tasks. “At the price of a cup of coffee of course.”
“Of course,” he nodded at her comment. He set the book down on the counter grab his wallet from his pocket, only to be greeted at the sight of a cup of black coffee being pushed towards him. He looked up with a bit of wide eyes, confused at her action.
“On the house,” she told him as she wiped down her counter top. “A little reward for noticing the book.”
“Thanks…” he began as he sat down on the bar stool.
“Ellie,” she answered. “And you’re welcome…”
“Bucky,” he reciprocated. She gave him a nod and smiled.
“I hope you enjoy the coffee and book, Bucky,” she told him before turning her head towards the sound of the door opening. He briefly looked at the girl as she talks to the new customer before turning his attention back to the cup of coffee and book in front of him.
Looks like he found another routine to add to his day.

“What got you smiling?”
Chris looked over at you as you stretched in the bed you both shared. He smiled at the sight of your morning face and leaned down to give you a morning kiss on your cheek.
“I got a message from Lizzo,” he revealed as showed his screen to you. You rubbed the sleepiness from your eyes as you tried to decipher the emojis on his phone screen.
“What did she say?” You asked as you gave up and snuggled closer to Chris, laying your head on his chest.
“I think she is shooting her shot?” He answered with half certainty as he wrapped his arm around you, securing you close to him.
“I don’t blame her,” you grinned as you listened to his heartbeat, wondering how lucky you were to be with him. “I don’t think I would have the guts to slide into your DMs like she did.”
Chris let out a soft chuckle as he lazily stroked you arm while shutting off the screen of his phone.
“If I knew your Instagram when I first met you, I would totally slide into your DMs,” he stated as a matter of fact. You let out a scoff before shoving him away jokingly at his comment.
“Says the guy who leaked his own dick pic online,” you reminded him. Chris dramatically clutch his heart like you had shot him. He quickly recovered after hearing your giggle at his act and quickly pulled you back into his arms.
“Well you are stuck with this guy,” Chris told you as he peppered you with kisses to the side of your head.
“Unless you go for Lizzo,” you reminded him of the message the singer had sent you. “Which by the way I would totally understand.”
“Really?” He asked, taken off guard by your statement.
“Of course,” you answered. “It’s Lizzo! I would leave you for her if she slid into my DMs.”
Feeling challenged by your words, he quickly changed his position and hovered over you, trapping you between his arms.
“Looks like I better keep you close then,” he told you in a cocky tone before leaning in to capture your lips.

Follow the string.
You read on the card with a white yarn string attached to it. After a long day at work, you couldn’t wait to decompress on the couch with Chris next to you. Instead, you are staring at the card in your hand with confusion as to what was going to happen. You decide not to question it any further and did what was instructed on the card. The color of the yarn changed from white to red as it lead you through the rooms in the house you share with Chris. You broke into a smile when you saw who was at the other end of the string. Standing in the middle of the backyard patio, Chris matched your smile as you walked into his sight.
“Hi,” you said with a light tone of uncertainty. “What’s the occasion?”
“Just wanted to do something romantic tonight,” Chris cheekily answered. You smiled at his answer and leaned in to give him a chaste kiss. When you pulled away, you could feel his lips linger on yours as he follow in your direction trying to prolong the kiss.
“Remember how we first met?” Chris asked as he stared into your eyes lovingly.
“Of course…” you confirmed. “If I recall correctly, Dodger introduced us by dragging you to me.”
“Almost ripped my arm off in the process,” Chris chuckled as he reminisce the fateful day. You giggled as well, remembering the day fondly.
“Do you remember the color of his leash that day?”
“Ummm…”
“It was red and it made me remember a story I heard. How two people who are fated to be together are tied by a red string…” he pointed at the string in your hand. “And no matter how long it takes, the two will eventually meet one another.
“So despite the sore shoulder I got that day, I’m glad that he and his red ‘string’ dragged me because I wouldn’t have met the most amazing girl that day,” he commented. You could feel your cheek heat up at his sweet comment causing to advert your eyes to your feet to try to recompose yourself.
“And I wouldn’t have been able to create so many great moments of my life,” he continued. “Including this one…”
He brought his hand from behind his back and knelt down on one knee. The red string that you had followed was tied to a ring that was in Chris’ hand. Your heart and eyes swelled with emotions as you begun to realize what was happening before you.
“Y/N,” Chris said your name nervously yet confidently. “Will you marry me?”
After giving your heartfelt ‘Yes’, everything that happened after was a blur. However, the one thing you will always remember is that red string that tied you to him.
Everyone experience moments in their lives where they knew it was THE answer they needed. It’s a light bulb turning on, or a little ping that sets off in their mind; or even that overwhelming instinctual feeling in their gut or heart. All of it screams that it is THE answer. The right answer.
Chris experienced it three times when he was with you.
The first time he experienced it was when he was spending time with you at his place. The friendship between the two of you was fresh. A honeymoon phase in the friendship. Sharing delicious food and drinks while listening to whatever music Chris had playing in the background. After hours of cracking jokes and light-hearted stories, it was inevitable for the conversations to shift to more serious and philosophical tone. There were moments where you both did not see eye to eye on certain topics, having mini debates throughout the hangout. However, you both end each debate civilly with no hard feelings towards one another. There was one topic that hung heavy between the two of you which ended with a mutual understanding for one another. You proposed a toast as a symbol to signify the understanding. As you both clinked your drinks and took a gulp, Chris couldn’t help but let his eyes linger at the sight of you. After a minute of staring at you, that’s when he knew.
He knew he liked you more than a friend.
The second time he experienced it was when you both were on the phone with one another. The lifestyle of an actor meant that you both had to figure out the arrangement of when and how to spend time together as a couple. After you both figured out a flow that works, the months you spend together as a couple is blissful. Despite the number of phone calls and video chats you both spent together, one particular one stood out to him. After he hung up from his phone call with you, he couldn’t help but stare at his phone for a few minutes. His face mixed with slight confusion and concern changed to relief when he realize what he was feeling.
He knew he wanted to live with you.
The third time he experienced it was when he came home from one of his film projects. Exhausted from his commute, all he wanted to do was to snuggle up next to you and Dodger on a couch and just enjoy the comfort of being at home. As he took a step into the house, he was greeted with music echoing throughout the space. His face automatically smiling as he could hear you singing along to the music faintly at a distance. His feet making his way through the house, following the sound of your voice. When he finally made it to his destination, he was greeted at the sight of you singing and dancing in a silly manner in front of Dodger. He leaned against the doorway, silently watching the performance unfold before him. When you finally realized Chris was home, you greeted him with the biggest smile and danced your way towards his arms. Your arms wrapped around his torso and his around you; your bodies pressed closely to one another. You gave him his usual welcome home kiss and gesture him to start swaying to the rhythm of the slow music that had begun to play in background. As you both stared longingly and lovingly into each other eyes before your slow dance was interrupted by an excited Dodger, that when Chris knew.

“Okay, I’m leaving babe,” Chris told you as he pressed a sweet kiss to the side of your forehead. “I love you.”
“Okay, see you later,” you told him as he walked towards the door, your eyes never leaving the pages of your book. Chris stopped in his track and took a mental pause to process what had just happened. He turned around and stared at the back of your head, eyebrows furrowed with confusion.
“I love you,” he repeated himself, wondering if you did not hear him the first time.
“Yep,” you responded, not moving an inch. If you had to be honest, you did hear him say it the first time. As every loving couple would do when the other is leaving, a quick reassurance of love is exchanged. But after watching a few videos of people not saying “I love you” back to their significant other just to see their reaction, you couldn’t help but be curious yourself.
“I love you,” you heard Chris reiterate, making you press your lips together to prevent yourself from laughing.
“Uh huh,” you responded as normal as possible. You could feel the tension build up as silence echos throughout the room. Then you hear keys set on console table behind the couch and Chris stepping towards your side.
“I said I love you,” Chris told you with slight annoyance and confusion. You could feel his eyes burning a hole in the side of your face.
“I heard you,” you told him, flipping a page in your book.
“Did I do something wrong?” Chris asked as he tries to think of what he may have done to not get an “I love you too” from you.
“Nope,” you answered. Chris’ eyebrows furrowed even more in confusion as he began to feel concerned about the situation that was unfolding before him.
“Are you mad?” Chris asked you with his hands on his hips.
“Nope,” you answered without looking at him. You can see his hands leave his hips with what you sense is frustration.
“Babe, I love you,” he told you assertively as he began to kneel down to get a better look at your face.
“I know,” you told him as you flipped another page. Chris shifted his body in front of you, trapping you between his arms.
“Look at me,” he urged. You looked up from your book keeping your expression composed.
“I. Love. You,” he enunciate, his eyes observing your reaction to his words.
“I. Know,” you enunciate back to him. You couldn’t help but smile slightly at the confusion plastered over his face.
“Babe,” he began. “What’s wrong?”
“Nothing,” you told him, trying not to break out into laughter.
“Then why won’t you say it?” he asked as his hands begin to rub the side of your thighs.
“Say what?” you asked, pretending like you don’t have the slightest clue of what he wanted.
“You know exactly what,” he said with disbelief.
“What?” you continue to ask. Not taking your supposed ignorance to his question, he moved closer to you, shimming his body between your legs.
“Babe,” he began with his lecturing tone. “We have already established that when one of us is leaving the room and say ‘I love you’, the other says ‘I love you’ back.”
“Okay.”
“I love you.”
“I know.”
“No,” he shook his head, not satisfied with your answer. “You’re suppose to say ‘I love you’ back.”
“Got it.”
“Okay, let’s try this again,” he began. “I love you.”
“I know,” you continued with your answer. He looked at you with disbelief and frustration, causing you to break your composure.
“Now you are just being mean,” he accused you with a smile, understanding the situation better after you started to giggle. He cupped your face in his hands, bringing it close to his.
“I… Love… You…” he said as he gave your lips a peck between each word.
“I love you too,” you giggled, giving up on the game you had started. His eyes brighten up in response to the words he was trying to pry out of you for the past five minutes. He pressed his lips to yours, pouring all the love he has for you into the kiss. He slowly pulled away from your face and stared into your eyes with his thumbs gently stroking your cheek.
“Okay now go do what you have to do” you told him, reminding him he still had errands to run. He shook his head and brought your lips back to his.
“Nope,” he answered. “I need to make sure you don’t forget to say ‘I love you too’ back going forward.”
