You did not believe in peaceful days. 

Things of the past. Factually, they had indeed happened, but it was impossible to see them in the same light. Levi preferred to call them the good old days, but for you, you labeled them simply as before the outbreak. 

A day like today, though, probably as peaceful as they got. Upstairs, you heard him working. Flipping over metal cans, checking for expiration dates. Running knives through sandpaper, sharpening the blades. Probing barrels with a covered rod, keeping your guns clean. As much as he wiped them, though, they would never be pristine - countless bloodshed forever tainting. 

Through the empty space between the door and the stairs, a single ray of sun illuminated your underground workstation. Light, literally and figuratively, was a rare luxury for you now. Your single generator and stash of batteries some of the most treasured necessities you would not dare to waste. Absentmindedly fidgeting, you thought back to before the outbreak - when you would plug in your cell phone, laptop, and television all at the same time. They were simpler times, “much simpler…” you whispered to yourself.

But were they simpler? You thought about your grandparents. Long dead by now, you were thankful they had not lived to the outbreak. If the infected did not get to them, the heart attack surely would have. Even back before the outbreak, they would always say, You kids these days with all these screens! In my day, we only had the radio and we were lucky if we could get anything to come in!

You shook your head and scoffed. Either they were indeed wise beyond their years or could truly see the future. Either way, you should have taken their word for it as here you were now - living by the heat of a fireplace and the entertainment of a radio - lucky if you could get anything to come in.

It was why today only reaffirmed: there was no such thing as a peaceful day.

“Hey, Erwin, will you tell me about her?”

“Well, her name was Marie….”

Marie. Marie.

Every night, right before he succumbed to the soft persuasion of sleep, he would see her face, what used to be so clear in its beauty now faded around the edges with time. How sweet his dreams would be of her, of a life that could have been had the fates dealt a different hand. Yet every night, that dream was torn from his grasp as the morning light filtered in from between the gap in the curtain, reminding him of what he once had.

He couldn’t blame you. Not after what he did, stringing you along for so many years, throwing away everything you’ve ever done for him with those words so carelessly spoken in a moment of panic. He deserved this. The overwhelming sense of loneliness, the emptiness of the house, and even the loss of your warmth beside him he could handle, but more than anything, he missed your soothing touch bringing him back from the edge of the nightmares that threatened to pull him under.

How selfish.

He never claimed to be selfless, and you knew this as well. He never once saw you complain when her smile would flash whenever he opened his wallet, that faded photograph of a pristine white dress, lacey veil, and his suit clad arms wrapped around her never once thought to be replaced with a memory of you and him.

He knew how you never forgot the day. The day that rolled around once a year where you would make yourself scarce, sending him off with a soft kiss on the forehead and a reminder to be safe. You would always have dinner on the table for him when he returned, an empty vase on the table for the bunch of flowers he would always have in hand, attempting to make up for the fact that he had been gone all day, chatting with the love of his life. As if the wilted blooms he brought you would ever rival the fresh red roses he would lay on the stone that bore her name.

How selfish he was, that all he wanted was to hear the key in the lock, your presence brightening up the grey tint on the walls that never seemed to dissipate since you left. How selfish he was, that he wanted you, yet was never able to let her go.

You came into his life like a flood, sweeping away all the fires of pain and anguish after losing her, cold waters soothing in a way he never knew. You were like nothing he could have predicted, nothing that he could have expected.

So, what was he to do now? You left as swiftly as you had come, a mess of his own making in your wake.

Everywhere he looked, was you.

Where in the past, he could only see Marie, now, he was reminded of your patience. How you never pushed him to move on, never pushed him to forget her, never once tried to replace her.

Even though that’s all that he ever treated you as, you never saw him as second best.

Second best. Secondary. Temporary.

Just as he was too much of a coward to ever admit that fact to you, he never tried to find you after you left. That was his gift, the first, and last thing he’s ever done for you since the fog of grief and longing lifted from his eyes.

How unfortunate it was that his cleared vision led him here.

Your hair was much longer now, shinier, under the fluorescent lights of the dairy aisle, teetering on your tiptoes to reach the chocolate milk you so loved on the top rack. There was something different about you, something that the last couple of years could not have been responsible for. Maybe it was the way you seemed lighter on your feet, no longer needing to carry the burdens of his past and shoulder your own troubles at the same time. Maybe it was the carefree way you spun around at the call of your name, eyes lighting up when a man approached you, hiding a big bouquet behind his back. Maybe, it was the way your eyes shone with a happiness he never quite saw in them before as you buried your nose into the bright red petals he never bought for you.

Maybe, it was the way you didn’t even register his presence as you brushed past, laughing easily as the man you were with pressed a kiss to your temple, before running a hand protectively over your sweater-clad belly. Maybe…maybe it was the way the silver band on your finger shone as you swatted his hand away.

Maybe, that was when Erwin realized, that he lost what he never deserved.

Levi

You never explained yourself to him. It was wrong of you not to, you knew it, but you were allowed to be selfish for once. After all, that’s all he ever was with you.

He used you, then threw you aside like nothing ever happened, hiding behind excuses of his inability to love, and not feeling the same way about you.

Hanji tried to contact you many a time after that day, but you didn’t let anyone through. You knew your resolve would waver, no matter how much Levi’s words and actions chipped away at your already mangled heart, you knew you would somehow find it in yourself to forgive. You knew with the slightest crack in your armour, you would forgive and take him back into your arms.

And forgive you did. But on your own terms. Steeled resolve laying the foundation for your every action.

Not even a week after the incident did Levi suddenly find himself back in your contacts. Your text lay in his messages, unanswered. “I’ll be over later around 7.”

Unsure of what to expect, he felt his heart starting to beat uncharacteristically fast in his chest as two soft knocks sounded. He found his steps unsure as he nearly stumbled in his haste to wrench open the door, catching the sigh of relief that threatened to spill from his lips when you were there on the other side.

Your usual cheery smile and bright demeanor caught him off guard. Was he forgiven? Was this all a bad dream?

His moment of elation was short lived when you thrust a bag towards him, smile faltering for a second as you met his eye, betraying the hurt that you tried so hard to hide.

“I’m sorry for over-reacting” you had said, “I should not have blocked you like that. It was childish of me, and I apologize.”

Your carefully constructed and calmly spoken apologies irked him further. He wanted to hear you scream, wanted you to yell at him, to cry, to pound at his chest, anything to show that you were just as affected as he was, his heart bleeding at your upturned lips and soft words.

“I just wanted to bring you the last of your clothes and get some closure. Thanks for everything Levi. I’ll see you around alright?”

How could you be so calm when he was breaking down inside? The air of finality with which you handed over the hoodie he had long given up hope of ever getting back and waved goodbye crashing over him like a tub of ice water.

This was what he wanted no? He didn’t love you. You weren’t the one for him. So this was for the best. Right?

It wasn’t until he held the soft material of the hoodie you brought back in his hands, your scent lingering, interwoven in the fabric, that he found himself shaking.

He built the walls around his heart for a reason, but how miscalculated that move had been. He had been so concerned about a threat from the outside that an internal attack was never considered. As your words rang out in his head once more, the pang that sent a shiver down his system was one he never knew. Levi never expected to fall for you.

But now the roles were reversed, and you waged a mighty battle. Every interaction after that moment was painfully appropriate. Never betraying an ounce of resentment nor hatred towards him. You treated everyone around him as if the two of you as a couple had never been real. Hanji was considered a good friend again, and you even resumed your coffee habits, sometimes even bold enough to go alone with him to the café where everything fell apart.

But never again did you walk close to him so your knuckles would brush, never again did you smile at him like he had put the stars in the sky for you, never again did you make sure the barista used a clean steeper and teapot when making his tea.

He may have been the one to say so, but even that, he came to learn, was a lie. “I feel, but I don’t feel the way she feels towards me.”

Indeed, you loved him more than anything. You loved selflessly, carelessly, unabashedly. How could he compare?

But when you stopped loving him? That was when he realized. It wasn’t that he didn’t feel the same. It was that nothing could have shone brighter than your love for him, like the endless competition between the sun and moon. Nothing could have matched what you felt for him, and it wasn’t until he was left all alone in the night sky, that he truly appreciated the light you once brought.

A light that he would never get back.

Eren

You had managed to get away with minimal replies and excuses for another week, but it was getting tiring. But tonight, was the night you understood. Tonight, was the night everything was finally made clear.

The music was a little too loud, and the red cup you clutched close was empty for the third time, body buzzing with the relief of lowered inhibitions.

Somewhere behind you, the projected imagine of a phone screen flashed against the wall, someone’s dating profile blown up for all to see. The crowd was chanting “Left!” or “Right!” depending on the image of the potential partners that came up and every time a match occurred, a cheer would erupt and shots consumed. Such was a tame night.

And tame it would have stayed had someone not taken your phone and handed it to the person in charge of the projector, and suddenly, it was your dating profile, out of date and unused, on the wall.

The crowd whooped and hollered in appreciation as a refresh of the parameters and a swathe of new photos of yourself had potential matches flooding in. “Right!” the crowd would scream, before looking to you for approval, not that it did any good. Your girlfriends swiped on your behalf, the list of successful matches and pick-up lines filled your message queue.

In the fray, you missed the way a familiar set of green eyes flit over your form hunched over on the couch, still clutching your cup.

He didn’t care for what was going on and couldn’t quite pinpoint why. You were just that annoying friend that followed him around. He, who had a contact list and offers of a good time cropping up wherever he went, so why couldn’t he shake the unease watching as yet another frat guy flashed across the screen before your friends squealed and swiped for you, hearts flashing on the screen at the match.

He didn’t have a claim over you, something he made very clear to all who asked. He was the one who said you weren’t his type, why should he be bothered who you chose to sleep with?

And maybe that’s when he realized. It was not the mere idea of you, underneath someone else, your hair splayed behind you as the hand that should have been his trapped your wrists, his name the one coming out mangled between your swollen lips. No, it was beyond that. He didn’t just want you to be his for the night, didn’t want to leave the warmth that you somehow managed to provide without lifting a finger.

For some reason, this realization made him angry. This was not his way. This was not his life. Eren Jaeger didn’t settle down with someone, let alone someone like you. Eren Jaeger didn’t fall in love, he didn’t get attached. The fact that you even made him consider it fanned the flames that were already gaining heat within.

He looked around the room, and the first lonely heart that glanced his way soon became yet another number in his phone. With every feverish kiss, every swipe of his tongue against theirs, he tried to force you from his mind. Their body melted into his touch, as he was well used to by now, but despite his best efforts, you somehow still managed to come to mind. You, who always treated him like a friend, wanting nothing more from him than what many others could offer.

You stayed with him, despite all he’s said to you, all he’s done. Lost in the way his mind was reeling while his body moved purely on muscle memory, he slowly started to realize his anger was not directed at you, but at himself.

He didn’t deserve you. That was what it was. He didn’t deserve you, wide eyed and happy to see him, be with him, for who, and what he was. You accepted his countless friend connections, the study sessions where he blew you off to go on dates with a constant stream of now nameless faceless individuals. You accepted him as who he was, accepted the darkness within him, and dared to make him feel the way he did for you.

Pulling back to take a breath, shaking free of the fingers that were tangled in his hair, his eyes searched the room for you. His spine stiffened and he could swear he felt a jolt of a spark, raw voltage reaching down to his toes as he catches your eye.

For a second, he saw the shock and pain pass through your features, mouth hanging open for a second as your eyes followed the contours of his body, to where his hands disappeared under the fabric of another’s shirt. You usually saw right through his disheveled hair and cocky grin, but tonight, it was he who saw himself through your eyes. He was in love with you.

There was nothing more alarming than the notion that you could so easily change who he was fundamentally. For yet another time in his sorry life, Eren chose what seemed to be the wrong path, dropping his gaze, ignoring the goosebumps that started to line his arms as he did what he knew would break you. What he knew would break him.

Because love be damned, Eren Jaeger kneeled for no one.

im kinda sad i dont feel the hype for aot s4 anymore :-( (persnally that is)

altho the ep where eren transforms inside the basement was dope but the hype after that just plummeted for me. im not sure what it is, the animation? the kind of messy transition between stories and timelines? i know this was rushed because of the pandemic but damn, if its this quality, i would've waited for years until its okay.

it's just sad seeing a show you're so invested in disappoint you :-(
