Kendrick Lamar - i

If your spirit’s in need of a lift, then we suggest setting aside a few minutes to watch the just-released video for Kendrick Lamar’s soulful, life-affirming self-love anthem “i.” The recent single off his untitled follow-up record to good kid, m.A.A.d. city is easily one of the standout hip-hop songs of 2014. In an interview with Hot 97 yesterday, Kendrick revealed that he wrote “i” for his friends who are currently in prison, as well as suicidal teenagers who show up to his concerts with self-harm scars.

Directed by Alexandre Moors and the Little Homies, the video perfectly articulates the song’s uplifting message through carefree choreography (and the sampling of The Isley Brothers’ iconic “That Lady” doesn’t hurt).

We see Kendrick leading a parade of revelers out of a dark, synth-soaked nightclub and onto the troubled streets of Compton, dancing the night away on a mission to spread love and positive energy. He then finds himself alone in the backseat of a car (Ron Isley makes a subtle cameo, as the driver), hanging his head out to cathartically belt out the song’s final verses in a powerful climax reminiscent of this haunting shot of Heath Ledger’s Joker in The Dark Knight.

Kendrick’s ‘i’ leaves musical breadcrumbs for his next album, which he says will boast a more raw, organic sound, and feature collaborators like Dr. Dre, Pharrell, and Flying Lotus’ production partner Thundercat.
