Nirvana released âSmells Like Teen Spiritâ 24 years ago today. Watch the band debut the track at OK Hotel in Seattle in April of 1991.
A sentence for each song.
The album cover has different colours in different countries. The classic black and white one was released in the UK, the red one in Europe. The Japanese CD/DVD edition has a metallic silver inlay and the US edition is blue.
Iâm so excited!!!! Si thank you for this wee gift đ
Nobody Really Cares If You Donât Go To The Party by Courtney BarnettÂ
My Dad is very hip, so hip that he was the one who first introduced me to Courtney Barnett. A singer-songwriter from Australia, Barnett made her debut in March with her album Sometimes I Sit and Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit. After hearing her album on his local radio station, my Dad pestered me to listen; it took five text messages and a phone call for me to realize this cool cat wouldnât let this go. I listened to âHistory Eraser,â a track off Barnettâs 2014 EP The Double EP: A Sea of Split Peas. It wasnât hard for me to understand my Dadâs persistence. Barnettâs music, with hints of 60âs psychedelic and 90âs grunge, feels like a revival of the rock nâ roll my Dad has always loved.
Itâs the combination of technical skill and light-heartedness, the talented Barnett doesnât take herself so seriously. Over distorted guitars and steady drum-beats, she hardly sings. Instead, with a tone so casual she sounds almost disinterested, Barnett will whisper, talk, yell, and still be able to somehow follow the melody. A songwriter with a sense of humor, her lyrics read like witsful streams of consciousness.
Released this past week, Barnettâs music video for her track, âNobody Really Cares If You Donât Go To The Party,â is simple and tangy, just what I would expect from her. On Londonâs Camden High Street, the Aussie and her band set-up on the sidewalk and started to play. That was all she needed to do. Immediately surrounding the band, a crowd of Londoners watched on with their heads bobbing and banging; it was clear that not moving in some way to Barnettâs music was practically unavoidable.
I wanna go out but I wanna stay home Barnett belts. I couldnât relate more; Netflix or party? Itâs the conundrum of our generation.
But again, Barnettâs lyrics are never as irreverent as one might think. Gets harder in the winter, gotta be a fake or shiver/It takes a great deal out of me. While still maintaining the carefree fun of her music and the humor of her lyrics, there is a serious undertone of anxiety. Though as a performer, she never lets it show. Their liveliness is infectious, and plays off the earnest nature of Barnettâs lyrics.
I guess I am never again allowed to ignore a music recommendation from my very hip Dad.
