i could go into a very lengthy discussion about how i think people shouldn’t hate cameron for his actions. at the end of the day he was also trapped in similar circumstances of strictness and forced conformity and to some extent i understand his fear of getting into trouble. i didnt think it was right for him at the end of the movie to say that neils death was mr keatings fault but i think he said it to convince himself that his actions were justified. i think he had to do what he did to stay safe and his character was a manifestation of being boxed into conformity which is what was the main struggle for all the characters.

to this day, the deleted scene where todd reads a poem to the poets while neils in his parents house about to … yk… breaks my heart. todd finally mustered the courage to read his own poem and neil couldnt be there even though todd probably only got the courage after seeing neil perform.

i feel like todd’s the first person to verbally acknowledge how hard neil works and neil completely explodes. neils dad expected him to work hard and never praised him for it and his schoolmates have known him for so long they don’t really mention it

but todd is new and he’s his roommate so he sees how neil is always slumped over his desk studying and one day he asks neil if he ever gets tired from putting in so much effort. todds the one who always reminds him to rest from then on and he becomes neils breath of fresh air

i found a copy of an earlier draft of the dead poets society screenplay (pretty similar to the version in the book) and it includes this detail. in the scene where they wake todd after neil dies, it was meant to show a closeup of his hand. i think they should’ve filmed it that way so there would be a parallel to when we only see neil’s hand when he dies.

i LIVE for the bathroom scene where cameron goes “excuse me for just a moment. yes, you.” while pointing in the mirror, meeks goes “henley hall, here i come”, pitts says “baby” into the mirror too, and todd messing up cameron’s hair with such a smile <3 it’s just UGH <3<3<3

i have this hc that todd was actually really close to cameron like when neil and charlie were being all loud and todd just didnt have the energy, he’d stick to cam.

i think this hc makes the ending a little more sad though because todd would’ve been more hurt by cams betrayal and he would have lost three friends.
