A few animal-themed handkerchief designs for you on this #WetnoseWednesday.
These handkerchiefs designs were created by textile and industrial designer Thomas Lamb between 1924 and 1945 and are a part of Accession 2181, Thomas Lamb Papers, in Hagley’s Manuscripts and Archives Department.

Do you know who the first professional woman in aeronautics was? Think it’s Amelia Earhart? Try again. Over a century before Earhart’s time, Sophie Blanchard took her place in history as the first professional female aeronaut in history.

The gif is of Mme. Blanchard performing at the restoration of the monarchy in France in 1814, and can be found in the Scrapbook of Early Aeronautica, a three volume collection of newspaper clippings, prints, and other ephemera connected with the early years of aeronautics. It was put together by librarian and collector William Upcott with content from 1780s to 1840.
Early aeronautics also happens to be one of the chapters in our current exhibition, Fantastic Worlds: Science and Fiction, 1780-1910, which you can see online or visit in person through early 2017.
One thing we love about incunabula is the use of earlier manuscript scraps. Here is our Liber Sextus Decretalium compiled by compiled by Pope Boniface VIII, with Gloss from Johannes Andreae printed by Heinrich Eggestein of Strasbourg around 1473, and shows that manuscript leaves were used as end-papers, and that scraps of manuscripts were also used as guards separating the quires…
Charting the rough waters of Easter
Well, it appears Easter Sunday came and went without any schisms or epic arguments between branches of the church. However, in c. 1150 northern England, when this manuscript was written, Easter without a great deal of disagreement would’ve been a relatively new concept!
You may recognize the bearded fellow above from my previous post on book holes. He is, in fact, the Venerable Bede, ‘the father of English history’ and all-around Renaissance man before there was even a Renaissance. It is he that we have to thank for not only the BC/AD dating system and the first scholarly books in English, but for the standardization of the methods used to calculate the yearly date of Easter. Before standardization, people were excomunicated or worse for celebrating Easter on an “incorrect” day. The Synod of Whitby in 664 set the Easter rules in stone, based on Bede’s calculations and evidence.
These charts come from a manuscript volume of works that include Bede’s Treatise on the Reckoning of Time, as well as writing by Dionysius Exiguus, whose research and figures laid the groundwork for Bede’s own calculations. I don’t pretend to know what exactly the figures mean, but I marvel at the amount of mathematical work that went into them. The 5th graph looks positively modern!

The First Caturday in April
April’s Kittens, by noted author and illustrator of cats Clare Turlay Newberry, received a Caldecott Honors Award in 1940. All but three of her works had cats as their main subject, and April’s Kittens was Newberry’s sixth publication with a feline plot. The storyline concerns young April whose cat Sheba has just had three kittens, Charcoal, Butch, and Brenda. April, of course, is delighted, but Dad is concerned as the family lives in an apartment that only allows one cat. What to do?
The book was originally published in 1940 by Harper and Brothers, with hand-set Bulmer type composed at the Golden Hind Press. Children’s books by major publishers were often farmed out to reprint publishers to produce more affordable editions that would be marketed to schools and libraries. Our copy, part of our Historical Curriculum Collection, is a “Special Edition” published by E. M. Hale and Company of Eau Claire, Wisconsin “by arrangement with the publishers of the regular edition.”
In February, I attended the 25th Havana Book Fair, and by far one of the most memorable experiences was visiting the Ediciones Vigia display and selecting new handmade books for our collection.
Ediciones Vigia is an independent publisher based in Matanzas, Cuba, and they specialize in handmade books that feature movable parts, collages, and found or recycled materials. This title, Delta De Las Arenas: Cuentos Arabes, Cuentos Judios, compiled by Rose Mary Salum, features 34 short stories by Latin American authors of Jewish and Arabic descent. The content of the stories and the heritage of the writers is reflected in the design of the books and the box that the artists designed for the stories to live in.

Four Rabbis and a Polyglot
Today we had a visit from a recently ordained rabbi (and soon-to-be HDS grad). He and a few other visiting rabbis came to look at some of our special collections. Among the items we brought out were a 1531 printing of the ‘Arukh and an 1809 book of Psalms, the first book printed in Hebrew in America. The above photo shows them gathered around a 1657 polyglot with sacred texts in Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Syriac, and Aramaic.

This ca 1820 “cornfield game” produced in England is clearly ripe for depraved entertainment of yore. Do they use the wheat to conceal bodies? Are the rather dapperly dressed figures plotting murder most foul? Is there some sort of strange fight club between the two farm workers? And most importantly, where is the corn? There is no corn!

It’s rare for the questions posed by seven year olds to result in much, let alone with anything as beautiful and useful as this. But seven year old Genevieve Jones is one of the exceptions. As she held a bird’s nest by her father’s side, she wondered why there were no books for her to figure out what bird species had made it. While Audubon and other naturalists had already created scientific illustrations of birds in the mid-1800s, no one had focused on the nests and eggs of these birds. Long story short—she helped make this book a reality, despite not living to see its completion.
The Biodiversity Heritage Library contains a full digital copy of the two volume set Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of the Birds of Ohio (1886). Additionally, there is more on the fascinating history of this family on our website. To go even deeper, see the 2012 book America’s Other Audubon by Joy M. Kiser. In it she chronicles the Jones family as they created this rare and wonderful work.
Illustrations of the Nests and Eggs of Birds of Ohio had text by Howard Jones and illustrations by N. E. Jones, Genevieve Jones, and Eliza Jane Shulze. It was self published in Circleville, Ohio by subscription from July 1879 to December 1886.

This week is the first week of Spring, so a perfect excuse to post some images from one of my favorite periodicals: Curtis’s Botanical Magazine. Full of hand-painted images of a variety of plants, these journals are a staple for any botanist.
