The Phoenix plays a significant part in several ways in Ezra. Initially, the founders of the would-be nation belonged to one of many mage guilds that occupied the world long ago. This, however, was one of the more fledgling guilds, named Phoenix Wing, led by a woman known as Serena. It was during a recruitment tournament it held that many of the nations later founders first happened across it. Minerva, one of the many resurrections of Melody’s mother, Sonia, a daughter of Cain, Touka, Elizabeth, and namely Ezra, herself, were some among many others.
As the guild rose its way into infamy during an era of struggle for power between the guilds, a unity between this guild and several others founded an alliance that set it against another union of darker-leaning groups, namely the guild at its front named Heaven’s Eclipse. Cain, as well as several others including Melody’s current enemy Nico, were amongst this group. Setting themselves against Phoenix Wing and its allies, an open struggle saw the two in warfare for four years, at which its finale sought the emergence of the demonic tome, the Book of Belial, and the legion of demons locked within. This brought about the appearance of Dumah, one of seven commanders of this vast army who slew Minerva out of vengeance. Alongside his comrades, the legions of demons made use of their own brand of magic to sweep through the world and wreck devastation over the course of the war’s ten long years.
It was at this point that many key figures turned the spotlight. In response to the near destruction of the world, Astrape, a son of the Greek Pantheonic god Zeus, aided the mages in fending off the demons. Ezra, using every ounce of her strength, defended the world from the mighty powers of the Circle’s below to her best ability. Touka, a dragon at heart, drove a painful strike against their foe, and the mages were quick to take advantage of the opportunity. Seizing the Book of Belial from Heaven’s Eclipse, the seven commanders and their army of demons were chained and locked away, albeit at the cost of a life.
At the turn of a new decade, the world lie in ruin. The old world was no more, and a new era had been brought about. Those who were not overtaken had lost nearly everything. It was a time of devastation, vile opportunity, and despair. Knowing the end of a fiendish alliance of guilds and the long war they provoked hadn’t brought salvation, the survivors of Phoenix Wing quickly scrambled to set in motion the means to unite the world. Other threats like this could happen again, be it soon or far into the future, and this was a time where personal differences need be set aside for the sake of a greater purpose. Aeon, a later resurrection of Minerva, Astrape, Oimeh, Izayoi, and a number of others established the land of the Book of Belial’s sealing as the founding nation for what would later be the central power for mages, naming it in the memory of the beloved member who gave her life to seal them away, Ezra. Raising the banner of the Phoenix to hearken the coming of a new age, the firebird has stood as its symbol for centuries since.
