TEXT : OPEN
EITAN : Anyone know what to get a nine year-old girl that's starting to loathe you?
EITAN : What do the kids say? High key? Yeah, she high-key hates me. Is nine one of those ages?
EITAN : Asking for a friend.
EITAN : I guess not since I outed myself in the second text. Disregard the third.
MAGGIE : "What do the kids say?"
MAGGIE : she doesn't hate you, so stop that right now !
MAGGIE : what about a trip ? or an experience ? like ballet tickets? she's old enough to actually appreciate that stuff now.
MAGGIE : what you're not allowed to get her is a personalized dance bag - - because i need to see a man about one.

maggieâs priorities forced a smile brighter than the sun onto eitanâs scruff-covered face. heâd be lying through his teeth if he said he wasnât happy to hear she wasnât playing the dating game at the moment ; happier than he should be, maybe. the man had his chance to make a home with her more than half a decade ago and watched her world burn down next to his own, instead. a part of that would kill him forever.
it wasnât like heâd wanted to save her. maggie hadnât ever needed saving ; she was the strong kind of songbird. quiet, but resilient. calculating but not cold. she was the yin to eitanâs yang. so what was stopping him from acting on how heâd felt?
standing with his feet planted in front of her, he glanced downward and let out a content sort of sigh, happy to hear that they wouldnât be losing one another any time soon. emilie rolls her eyes as he places his lips on maggieâs forehead. âthank you,â he whispered. âfor never giving up on our ⊠friendship. you know?â
âdad, god,â he hears emilie groan, watching as she bounces toward the universityâs recreational lobby doors, hopping down to sit at her usual spot. âshe hates me. why does she hate me, mags? is it really that time? âthe hating dad because sheâs grownâ time?
as much as she hated to admit it , maggie was still trying to find her footing in this re-established best friendship. eitan was right. she hadnât ever given up. but distance had crept in, and life separated them, and there was a part of her that struggled to accept the fact that, in the past, the fight to remain in each otherâs lives despite the challenges hadnât been a more valiant one. calls went unanswered for weeks at a time, texts seemed to gather dust in her phone. eitan had been the person that had made her feel the safest and most valuable in the whole world, and the absence of him had nearly ripped her apart.Â
eyes fluttered shut as eitanâs lips made contact with her forehead and briefly silenced the nagging, anxious thoughts that were prone to plaguing her at inconvenient moments such as this one. they would be okay - of course theyâd be okay. â yeah , well. youâre worth sticking around for, so itâs easy - - even when life isnât. you know ?   â she smiled gently up at him, before her attention was redirected to emilie who was clearly not in the mood for the sentimentality that the adults were displaying.Â
â she doesnât hate you, drama king.  â she said plainly , nudging at his side with her hip.  â youâre her whole world , you know ? that can be kind of overwhelming. she has a lot to process, you know, moving & getting settled and readjusting life, and youâre the center of her whole world. so youâre going to get the brunt of every emotional response she has to life. good & bad.  â parenting hadnât been something that maggie had yet considered beyond daydreams, so she wasnât entirely sure that her advice was exactly quality. her ex-fiancĂ© had rejected the idea of children, much to her own heartbreak. â sheâs nine goofball. youâre in the clear until at least the end of fifth grade.   â

MAGGIE : i totally just recreated the thanksgiving leftover sandwich from FRIENDS.           MAGGIE: i still have a stupid amount of food, so iâm taking requests and will make you      one if you show up at my door.      MAGGIE: first come, first served.Â

â i just found out that the leafy part of a strawberry is called a calyx⊠and honestly ?? it makes me feel a little uncomfortable. â the brunette muttered, running a hand through her hair. â i donât think iâll ever look at a strawberry the same again. âÂ
â iâm allergic to strawberries , so iâve never been able to look at them in a normal, rational way, â maggie started , shaking her head. â but you just gave me reason now to hate them, truly hate them, that iâve never had before. calyx has to be the worst word iâve ever heardâ

BENTLEY: so i may or may not have some weird situation going on
BENTLEY: i was watching the new buzzfeed unsolved the other day and it was wild as fuck ?? like ghosts & all
BENTLEY: idk if it's just my mind fucking with me or whatever, but like, i'm at least 78% my place is haunted so
BENTLEY: if you catch me outside ( no pun intended ) feel free to offer up some assistance to fuck these ghosts up
MAGGIE: okay so, first of all i 100% believe this building is haunted...
MAGGIE: but your apartment might not be! mine definitely is, but!! could it possibly be that you've become so invested in unsolved videos that it's...like? leaking into your reality?
MAGGIE: if not, and weird stuff actually is happening, can i please come and try to spook the ghost out of your place?

âi guess iâm just choosing to look on the bright side of things.â taylor shrugs innocently. he knew that could be said for literally every other day of his life, but for some reason it rang especially true today. Â
the idea of eating chocolate this early in the day definitely makes taylor feel much like a kid whoâs been told he can stay up later than his usual bedtime. then again, there really shouldnât be a limit involved for chocolate intake. Â
he canât say no to damn near unlimited fudge icing, so he follows maggieâs lead, relaxing a bit as he mulls over what to say and how to say it.  âitâs notâŠitâs not, like, a big deal or anything? but i had this really nice date the other night. andâi dunno. i donât wanna talk your ear off âbout it, but i donât remember feeling that at ease.â
â well , iâm 100% in support of this attitude , mr. bright side." sheknew too well the power of a positive attitude, and knew how overwhelming life could become without one. sheâd experienced both and now strived for the former as best she could.Â
icing-coated spoon in hand , maggie drifts toward the other side of her kitchen , grabbing a box full of teabags before taylorâs words see her shoving it aside so she can whip around to look at him. she waves the spoon in his direction , excitement glimmering in her eyes. âitâs not....like, a big deal. shut up !â she exclaims , smile present even in her voice. for taylor , a date was a huge deal, and she knew it.Â
â please , talk my ear off. i want to know everything. if you leave anything out , iâll be able to tell.â she reaches out to nudge his arm with her hand. her voice & smile soften as she speaks âthis is amazing taylor. iâm so proud of you.â

@mvrgarets
Do you miss anyone right now?
â my dad. this time of year was always his favorite, so iâm missing him extra. â    Â
taycohcnsâ:
taylor knows better than to set himself up for heartbreakâbut to be honest, ever since his date with maritza (the one he actually showed up for), heâs been feeling a whole hell of a lot lighter. maybe the dating world isnât so scary after all. he doesnât want to jump the gun and plan out a whole road map, so heâs made sure to keep his distance while still reaching out every now and then. heâs certain there hasnât been this glowy of a smile on his face since he met toni, and that speaks volumes.
itâs with this newfound confidence that taylor decides to pay maggie a visit. he might end up gushing about the pretty latina at some point, but he also wants to make sure maggie knows sheâs invited to the cohen family shindig. after all, sheâs like a sister to taylor, and heâs grateful to her for being as loyal to eitan as she has been.Â
âhey mags.â he greets her, biting his lip in an attempt to hide the big smile from brimming on his features too soon.  âwhatâve you got thatâs the most chocolate thing right now?â // @mvrgarets
it was an unspoken rule of maggie & eitanâs friendship that she had also adopted the entire cohen clan into her extended family. with no siblings of her own, this had always been an entirely welcome addition to her life. taylor, especially, had become sort of a big brother to maggie, and the years had cultivated a strong bond between the two of them.
which it was no surprise when the man decided to drop by at odd times, as he does now. she pads up to the door, fully equipped in a sweatshirt and mickey mouse pajama pants. she clocks the expression on his face right away. a sort of goofy, wide set grin threatens his entire face. the look on his face provokes a bright smile of her own she leans up and presses a friendly kiss to his cheek. â well hey , smiley .â she steps inside, allowing him room to enter.Â
â cupcakes are cooling in the fridge, but thereâs a fudge icing sitting on the counter, and some regular chocolate in the cupboard,  go for it. âÂ
she quickly relocates to her kitchen, rummaging around her drawers for two large spoons, one of which she offers to taylor. without hesitation, she dips her own spoon into the icing, before looking toward her companion. â you seem awfully chipper...â
middlecohenâ:
âI havenât gone on a date since 2016 and I think Iâm mostly okay with that,â Eitan retorted with a loud chuckle, using it to mask his nervousness with whatever charm he could muster up in front of Maggie. The truth was heâd wished more than once that he could take her on a proper date ; cross a line that perhaps should have been before either of them found and lost their supposed âgreat loves.â But he didnât. He hadnât.Â
Hadnât told her a single thing.
âWhat would this prince charming be like? Your fake date,â he asked with an eye roll. âInvisible Man better treat you right.â
â itâs just an extra perk that being a bachelor makes you that much more mysterious. for a playwright thatâs a good thing. youâve got that whole, like, charming hermit thing going on. that sells !   â she laughed , doing the best that she could to make light of a dark reality for the both of them. they had been trapped in relationships that werenât good for them. those relationships took them away from each other. maggie had lost the only person ( barring her mom , of course ) that knew exactly how to make things okay. Â
â i think iâm over the prince charming thing. i thought i had it, and it ended up being the universe playing some sort of cosmic joke on me.  â she shrugged her shoulders, tucking a piece of hair behind her ear. maggie looked down at her boots for a moment, deep in thought. â  iâd just want - - i donât know. someone good. someone whoâs good to me, you know? someone who really sees me. an actual partner.  â another shrug rolled off of her shoulders before she looked over at eitan with a beaming grin, quickly displacing the sadness that recognizing all she had missed out on had elicited. â but getting a date isnât high on my list of priorities right now. you are, you know ?  you , em , my mom, my students, and the store. â
â itâs not every day that your favorite person waltzes back into your life.  â  maggie lifted her hand toward his face , affectionately brushing her knuckles against his chin. â and iâm never letting that whole drifting apart thing happen again, because frankly it was... â she quickly lowered her voice, looking toward emilie before continuing in a whisper.        â bullshit. i get you back, and iâm not taking it for granted, you know ? thatâs whatâs important to me right now.  â    Â
