Welcome to my photography blog, which I created on World Photography Day 2024.

Originally from North Wales, I now live in a town in the Pennines, with my wife Jane (also a keen photographer)

As a Photographer, I particulary enjoy landscape photography, especially in dramatic and wild locations in the great outdoors.

Here's an interesting one I captured on Deer's Gallows - a gritstone rocky outcrop, near Skipton, UK.

Peatland Restoration - Kirkconnell Flow

Kirkconnell Flow Nature Reserve - A major project over the last 20 years to restore an area of badly damaged peatland near Dumfries.

Around 90 hectares of lowland raised bog has now been restored at NatureScot’s Kirkconnell Flow Nature Reserve, thanks to funding from Peatland Action.

Kirkconnell Flow is an important example of an ancient raised bog. The peat bog is now making a 'remarkable recovery', with peat laid down at a rate of 1mm a year. The peat has a depth of 6-10m.

Pointing the way!

'This way' - an old gas light post eerily pointing the way along the path through a rather mysterious woodland, on a foggy afternoon in December.

Snowy Coke Kiln - waiting for the Spring thaw.

A 'Coke Kiln' remains on the site of the former Towneley Colliery (which was sunk in 1860s and closed in 1949). A small replica brick coke kiln was re-built on a hillock to commemorate the colliery's brickworks. The former colliery site, next to the Burnley to Todmorden railway line (also known as the Copy Pit Line) is now part of the Towneley Woodland.

The 'Mirky' Wood

Whenever we go walking deep into Gisburn Forest, the dark and shadowy woodland always conjures up images of 'Mirkwood', the great mystical forest east of the river Anduin in Rhovanion in J.R.R Tolkien's Lord of the Rings.

The floor of these woods are carpeted by fallen pine needles and leaves, but you'll find dark green mosses everywhere.

Mosses are part of a group of plants known as 'bryophytes'. There are over 20,000 species of bryophyte on Earth, with over 1,000 species found in the UK.

Although these mosses live in the dark, shaded parts of the woodland, on the brief occasions that they are bathed in sunshine, it turns the mirky woodland into a truly magical place.

'Dark and moody skies over Pendle Hill'

'Dark and moody skies over Pendle' -photo taken from Crookrise Crags on Embsay Moor, the dark clouds hanging ominously above Pendle looked very ominous.

Rippled Reflections

My husband, muse and photographic tutor - XP2 in Caffenol Delta

Here's a great B&W potrait pic of me by my wonderful wife and Photo Assistant,Jane .

She captured my pic, taken on XP2 film, which is normally processed as a C41 colour film. In this instance, however, the film was developed in Caffenol (a 'homebrew developer' made from household ingredients - coffee, washing soda and acetic acid).

I must say that I'm very impressed how well this pic turned out, when processed in 'homebrew' although it doesn't smell very nice as a developer.
