Byulyi would be lying if she said she did not find the ‘getting the two killed’ bit rather disturbing. Her assumptions and theories about what was happening were disintegrating, and not necessarily remembering what had occurred the night before caused worry to build up within the girl. Just what the hell was going on?
When the boy brought up the mention of a ‘creature nearby’, Byulyi’s had to hum in suspicion, her head tilting sideways as her eyebrows furrowed in question. If there was such a thing nearby, she would have heard it too, right? When the boy mentioned trust, Byulyi wasn’t certain if she could trust the stranger’s assumptions, but apparently it did not matter what she thought, for she was swiftly scooped into the mysterious boy’s arms and shoved up into the canopy of a tree in a matter of seconds.
“What the hell!?” her voice was quiet but shrill as she frantically backed against the trunk of the tree, accidentally shaking the branch the two sat on slightly in the process. The mysterious boy sat just feet away from her on the same branch, staring directly at her and threatening her with murder if she didn’t comply. Honestly she doubted that someone as frail as the boy in front of her could kill her, but the worry of suddenly being jumped by someone that had some sort of super-sonic hearing scared her more than probably intended. She kept her distance, eyes watching the boy’s every move.
“We’re all mutants here.”
“Where’s ‘here’?” The words spilled out of her mouth faster than she would have liked, arms hugging the trunk of the tree behind her in a desperate attempt to keep her from losing her footing on the wobbling branch. Her mind was reeling in a panic, her consciousness focused on not letting it show until the stranger brought her attention to her pajamas…her favorite, now dirt and grass-stained Pororo pajama pants. Wonderful.
“… Thanks…” the girl groaned, her voice bubbling down from rage and fear into a mixture of embarrassment and spite. She sat in silence for a moment, eyeing the small penguin illustrations that dotted the baggy fabric; the miniscule distraction helped the girl’s panic simmer down, her mind beginning to clear and think the slightest bit more rationally. She lifted her head back up toward the stranger in front of her, her head tilted to the side to brush away the fringe that only slightly covered her eyes, returning to her confident facade as she eyed the boy. “What do you want to know?”
the girl's embarrassment at her pajamas seemed to quell her brief fury at being suddenly swept into a tree, and kyungsoo's lips lilted into a slight smile. it was both amusing and endearing. blinking the thought away and bringing his attention back to the subject of most use and interest, he held a finger up and said, “question one: who are you?” lifting another finger, he hesitated, and then put the second finger back down. “because it'll weigh on my conscience if i don't tell you, it's probably in your best interest to use a fake name. i want to know your real name, but i'm a goody two shoes and can't trick anyone for shit. so you should tell me your real name anyway.”
now satisfied with the first question, he lifted his second finger again. “two: what powers have you got?” a third finger. “three: did they give you a weapon?” a fourth finger. “a few personal notes: can you tell me what the cartoon on your pajamas is about? my hyung used to watch it but i can't remember a thing about it except for the penguin.” cracking a smile, he waggled his eyebrows. “that last question is the most important one, obviously.”
sighing, kyungsoo forced himself to take on a more solemn expression. even though he'd come here to fight, it hadn't exactly sunk in—he hadn't had to kill anyone yet, and the whole bit about taking down arcade seemed obsolete from his vantage point. “i must look like i'm having fun, asking you questions like that. but we're in a pretty shit situation, in the end, and i don't want you to think for a moment, just because i was all smiley for a couple seconds, that we aren't. false hope is probably a death sentence, where we are. most things are.” he looked down at his feet, then back up at her, offering his hand to shake. “i'm eden, by the way, if it makes you more comfortable to answer my questions.”

“Ah, you’re lucky I found you, such an easy target…”
Byulyi’s eyes widened to the size of dinner plates as the feint voice of a male, just barely a few feet away from her, broke the eerie silence around her and caught her attention. The voice was completely unfamiliar; she was in some way acquainted with most students on campus, and nobody she wouldn’t know would be committing some cruel hangover-dosed prank. Target?
Her eyes traced her perimeter, searching for a source to the noise, only to find a head sticking out from a long stretch of brambles, the leaves shaking slightly around him, causing the girl to raise an eyebrow. His hair looked grease-ridden and matted, face dusted with dirt, and her belief of the whole situation at hand being a ruse started to wear thin.
“What… what is happening, who—” Her words were swiftly interrupted by the individual, and the quick barrage of questions caused her lips to seal shut.
Power? Byulyi’s mind reeled at the sudden mention of a power. He couldn’t possibly know of her ability, could he?
Unless he didn’t. Because this was all a prank.
Of course.
A prank.
Play stupid, Byul.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about!” her voice was slightly louder than what she would have liked, the birds around her ceasing their incessant chirping for the slightest second as an echo passed throughout the wood. Backtrack. “I mean… what do you mean? Where’s the campus? Where am I?” Might as well throw a barrage of questions back at him while I’m at it.
kyungsoo couldn't stop himself from cringing when the girl began to raise her voice; startled by the volume, his eyes grew wide and he pressed a finger to his own lips, hissing out an urgent shhhh! it was all he could do to keep himself from putting a thick web over the girl's mouth, which was probably in both of their best interests to do, but also quite rude. “jesus christ!” he hissed, glaring at her, “what about 'shhh' don't you get? you're going to get the both of us killed or something.”
beneath his knees, kyungsoo could begin to pick up a rather alarming series of vibrations. it could simply be a small animal, but figuring that he was rather tired and didn't want to waste time deciphering the movements, he whispered, “someone might be coming—just trust me, alright?” and scrambled down the tree and scooped the girl up, climbing back up with her almost as quickly as he came.
after setting her down on one of the thicker branches, well concealed by the thick leaves, kyungsoo crawled onto his own branch and sat across from her cross-legged. “make another loud sound and i will gag you and push you right out of this tree, okay? you'll be my first kill. i'm a heartless ninja.” he raised his fists in an attempt at looking tough. “i can answer all your questions later, if you answer mine. you totally know what i'm talking about because we're all mutants here. and you could at least say thank you since i complimented your pajamas.”

Upon awakening, the feeling of marbles being thrown against the innards of Byulyi’s skull prevented the girl from wanting to lift her head, her entire body stiff.
The aura of the world around her was entirely different; her current location was completely devoid of the typical bustling student body surrounding a multi-story university campus on the grounds of a finely clipped lawn. The shadows of tall, overgrown trees surrounded her, the fresh scent of humidity and earth clogging her lungs, and the strange lack of gasoline in the atmosphere tipped her off that she was not laying in the grassy lawn of her campus after some drunken prank.
In her rather childish Pororo pajamas, the migraine-inflicted girl sat up in the wild grasses, a hand holding her head by the right temple as she scanned the area around her. Just where the hell was she?
“Hello?” the girl’s voice rang through the wilderness. She wasn’t sure if anyone would actually be here, but if her friends were actually her friends, they wouldn’t just leave her alone in some random forest would they? “Is anyone here?”
slipping back through the woods after his second foray for scrap metal, kyungsoo decided he had a bit of a knack for running into the lost and confused. it was better that it was him, anyway—as far as he knew, though he hadn't met very many people, he was certain that in this fight-or-die world, most others would be happy to chance upon such easy targets. of course, it could be a trap, but the girl sitting in the grass looked more disoriented than anything else.
at first he had been a little startled to find colorful pajamas of that cartoon his hyung used to watch smack in the middle of the woods. the little penguin and his bright orange goggles hadn't fit into the rest of the surroundings, and he had quickly dodged behind the nearest tree, climbing swiftly and silently to the top as a precaution before getting a better look at her.
now, quite certain he was in a position to defend himself in the case it was a trap, he clung tightly to his makeshift web bag, filled to the brim with random chunks of metal from the junkyard, and poked his head out of the leaves.
“shhhh,” he whispered, completely unaware that he probably looked like a floating head in her perspective, “ah, you're lucky i found you... such an easy target...” he shook his head, rustling the leaves quietly around him. “anyway, who are you? what powers have you got? do you have a weapon? i like your pajamas.”

This is terrible, just terrible. Why is he even here? He shouldn’t be.
God knows how long he’s been stuck wandering around. He’s exhausted, tired and lonely—he’s not used to not being around people. He looks down at his once clean, white and pristine lab coat and groans. Who thought it would be a good idea to knock him out while he was still on his shift? Everything would be easier if they had the decency to wait until he’s at home. He wouldn’t be wearing such restricting clothing and in something much more comfortable.
He’s still dressed in his typical work clothes here, button down, tie, slacks, plain toes, lab coat (stained with dirt and grass while the sleeves are edged with dried blood) and his badge is tossed away just in case. He pulls at his tie, loosening it and continues to trek through the forestry.
Joongki runs a hand through his hair, sighing in frustration as his coat gets caught onto a branch. “Not again,” he mutters. He would have disposed it long ago—if it weren’t for the sentimental value that still clings to the fabric. All the intimate moments he’s had with it in the break room, his office and sometimes the rooms of patients. There were far too many memories attached to it.
He takes another step—slips and falls into a shallow ditch. His leg is trapped and lab coat caught in yet another branch. A groan escapes and he rubs his cheek. No one is going to save him, no one. He’s left here to die—unless he takes a risk.
“Hello?” He calls out, for anyone—anything. “Hey! Uh, someone help? Please?”
kyungsoo estimates that it's a few hours after sunrise when a quiet rustling and subsequent thud rouse him from his sleep. letting out a soft groan, he adjusts his position in his web. a few leaves from the branch above him fall as the tree shakes. “go away,” he mumbles. “shut up, stupid tree.”
a few brief moments later, just when his breathing evens out again and he feels the last bits of much-needed sleep settling atop his eyelids, a voice nearby catches his attention. eyes suddenly wide open, he checks his extrasensory radar for any threat nearby; whatever the owner of that voice is doing, it doesn't seem to be dangerous. relieved but still wary, he clambers to the edge of one of the branches and peers over.
“... someone help? please?”
just below him, a rather defenseless looking boy lies in a ditch, tangled all over himself and into the branches. the sight is admittedly a little comical, and kyungsoo feels bad having to stifle a laugh at this boy, who is obviously annoyed and suffering. just then, it occurs to him that perhaps it could be a trap. he might climb down and then the guy would like, explode him or something. the very thought makes him shrink back a little behind the leaves. you should leave, he tells himself, but before he knows it he's saying something to the boy on the ground.
still obscured by the branches and certain the boy can't see him, he calls, as threateningly as he can manage, “not a lot of people would be willing to help an easy victim like you, you know?” he holds his breath, shrinking as if to hide himself better in the leaves. who knows? the guy could have x-ray vision. then, against his own better judgement, he speaks again, voice a little more gentle. “are you really stuck?”

kyungsoo opens his eyes to wet grass soaking into his clothes, stars spilled out over the sky, the distant sound of ocean meeting shore. his name rings loud through the air. his powers. his age. in the dim line of light over the horizon, he watches dust settle into dusk. the light grows infinitesimally thinner. he lies there in the open, staring at a single speck of dust drifting down towards him. when it comes too close for him to focus on it any longer, he looks at another. is this the way dust settles into dust, and ash into ashes? so nondescriptly, so calm, so unrecognized and unmemorable?
his eyes burn at the injustice. there were boys here who deserved entire memorials erected in their names, settled into the dirt the same way invisible, inanimate particles hovered unacknowledged in the air. he bites his lip: he did not come here to ponder them.
the dust settles and settles until all trace of light disappears behind the edges of the ocean. kyungsoo inhales, shallow. exhales, slowly and deeply. deflates. the webs are sticky against his back, but at least they were unnoticed. grab the backpack, sling it over your shoulder. get up on your feet. blink away the fire and push it into your fists. he throws a punch into the air, wondering how much dust has been derailed by this single, half-hearted maneuver. the grass rustles when his feet move. walk. you are alive.
matted down by sweat, his bangs fall over his forehead. he pushes them back as far as he can and swallows the taste of blood coating his tongue. blink away the fire, push it into your fists. he listens to the steady rhythm of grass parting in his wake, feels the cold spot in his throat as he inhales. he trudges forward into the woods, as deep as he can go before he stumbles over his own heel for the third time, until the vibrations in the air and the ground feel absent of life. setting down his bag, he climbs into the nearest tree and spins a simple web in a space between this tree and the adjacent one, mostly concealed by thick canopy. too tired to set up camp properly, he tosses a strand of silk down and fishes for his backpack, pulling it up before tossing it into a corner of his half-assed hideout. the branches shake with the vibrations of the web. as he leaves, he nearly tumbles out of the tree, landing on the ground more noisily than he’d like.
his fist clenches. it’s as if he isn’t even trying. biting down hard on his bottom lip, he rubs his eyes. think strategy, think strategy. glancing up at his web one last time to check that it’s secure, he silently makes his way out of the woods and towards the nearest group of abandoned buildings.

skin rubbed raw against burlap, blackness under moonlit sky fades into blackness fades into you. your hands are nowhere to be found and the silk is sticky and heavy against your back. you only know your head is still there from the throbbing in your skull. fists pound against bone but to you this cranial space is empty without thought. where are the thoughts? where are your thoughts?
outside of your own body, your voice whines in cracking sobs. your entire body aches when you cannot think. your nerve endings send messages to your brain; all you know is that it hurts, a cognative brick wall of pain. who told you to seek this fate? you are but a child.
they carry you with brutish force, knees jabbing you, knocking you around. every time you hit the ground the cycle begins again: skin rubbed raw against burlap, blackness blending into blackness, seeping into your skull, liquid vacancy pouring through your eyes, your nose, your lips. where are your thoughts? who told you to seek this fate?
the universe holds no answers for you (or perhaps it does, but fear and pain and punches of solid emptiness flood your skull until you cannot hear them). only blackness, fading into blackness, fading into you. fading, fading, fading.
gone.

The most beautiful and most profound emotion we can experience is the sensation of the mystical. It is the sower of all true science. He to whom this emotion is a stranger, who can no longer wonder and stand rapt in awe, is as good as dead.
