After Mark’s long time friend Anastasia ran into the back of his car, he still managed to make it to work and then spent the majority of the day there before heading to an auto repair shop one of his buddies recommended. The place was quiet when he pushed through the entrance and out of the rain, the sound of his wet shoes echoing through the lobby with each step. He stood at the front counter, whistling quietly. Minutes passed without anyone showing up. “Hello?” he called out, brow raised.

When he spun around, his gaze was met by a familiar face. “Anastasia?” he mused, pulling off his sunglasses and tucking them into his jacket. His own features softened as tension turned into surprise. “I haven’t seen you in months, how are ya?” Mark instinctively wrapped the petite brunette in a tight hug before releasing her and assessing the damage to his bumper once more. He couldn’t be that mad. Not at her at least. The two had known each other for almost twenty years, though, these days their schedules kept them both tied up most of the time. There was a line of cars forming behind them, one driver laying on his horn. Mark flipped him off and nodded towards a vacant lot across the road. “Let’s get out of the road, yeah? We can park over there.” Without waiting for a response, hoping she’d follow, he slipped back into his Camaro and parked in the lot before getting back out. His large frame was leaned against the drivers side door, feet crossed at his ankles. While he waited for Anastasia he dialed the number to an auto and body restoration shop. No answer. “Dammit,” he muttered to himself. Mark could feel his blood pressure rising again. He wouldn’t go through his insurance company for this, for her. Money was and had always been an object to Mark. Getting it fixed would be easy if he could just find the right place.

With a decisive thud, the elevator jolted to a halt. Cillian glanced up from his phone, mildly irritated at the delay but not yet concerned. Then the lights went out. A moment’s silence, then an exasperated exhale in the dark. “Really?”

Mark’s eyes flicked down to the watch on his wrist as he stepped onto the elevator at Miller Law Firm. There was one person occupying it and he nodded a simple hello before pushing the button for the top floor. He was already fifteen minutes late to a meeting that he had scheduled. Thanks Hank. He had spent the better half of his morning wrestling shoes out of his dogs mouth. It crossed his mind that things couldn’t get any worse but as fate would have it, they did. About two floors up, the elevator came to an abrupt stop with the lights shutting off. “Are you kidding me,” he grumbled, setting his suitcase down and fishing his phone from his pocket. He dialed his secretary’s number, praying she would answer. When the line beeped on the other end, Mark assumed the power had gone out in the whole place. He tried for her cell and let out a sigh of relief when she answered. “Elizabeth? It’s Mark. I’m stuck on Elevator G... no, I’m not alone there’s one other person... it’s out in the whole place? Fuck... well, can you call the power company and find out what the hell is going on? Yes, just let them know that I’m stuck in an elevator and the whole firm is without power. Call me back as soon as you get through.” Without saying goodbye, he locked his phone and shoved it back in his pocket. The other man was quiet and Mark couldn’t make out his facial features, but even in the dark he could almost feel the poor bloke tense up. “Sorry about this, it’s never happened before...”

“God dammit, this fuckin’ traffic will be the end of me..” A closed fist came down hard on the steering wheel of a midnight black camaro. Mark Miller had been in the same spot for fifteen minutes and the line was only just beginning to slowly move forward. Though being head of the firm allowed him to show up when he wanted to, this morning was a little different as there was a meeting regarding an upcoming trial.

As he took his exit off the highway, a green light turned straight to red when he reached it. Slamming on his brakes, his fists immediately made contact with the steering wheel again. It had been mentioned to him before that he needed to consider anger management but he kept putting it off. As he opened his mouth to mumble more expletives, his phone buzzed in the passenger seat. He answered, irritably. “What?” he hissed. “Sounds like someone woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning.” The voice of his ex spewed into his ear, slowly relieving some of his pent up tension.

Before the conversation could continue, Mark was jolted forward against the steering wheel, his jaw crashing against it and phone slipping from his grasp. A large clank sounded as another car slammed into the back of his. “Son of bitch,” he growled, his eyes flicking to the rearview mirror. Forcing the car into park, he grabbed his phone off the ground, yelling that he would call her back. He exited the car, slamming the door behind him as he walked  over to the tail end. At the sight of the scratched up and dented bumper, Mark lifted his clenched fist to his mouth, teeth sinking deep into his skin in an attempt to restrain himself. “What did I do to deserve this shit?!” he spat, turning around to meet the other driver.

Hank the Tank

“ so i know i’ve been going on about this but it’s important and it just doesn’t make sense. how could they snub widows! oscar nominations are this month now so i just have to get this out of my system, ” geneva continued to rant, sitting in a west seattle park with her companion, the two children she was a nanny fast asleep in their double buggy which she had manoeuvred here with ease. “ and you know i’m a queen fan, a massive fan, somebody to love is my go-to karaoke song but bohemian rhapsody for best picture over widows? sure you can say rami malek’s performance was excellent but better than viola davis?” she continued, hardly taking a breath in between sentences. there wasn’t a lot that could ever rile her up, it may actually only be a list of 1: movies. and she had been set off yet again.

Getting a dog was something Mark thought he’d never do- yet there he was, walking the newest addition to the Miller family through a quiet park in West Seattle. His mom, Colette, had purposefully sent him a picture of the poor pup that had suffered abuse from a previous owner, knowing her son secretly had a heart of gold when it came to animals- despite his hardened heart when it came to people. Surprisingly enough, the golden retriever had lasted at the shelter for a couple of weeks before Colette came across him. The first few days after Mark brought Hank home were trying. He was still a puppy so he chewed damn near everything. Now, things were finally starting to calm down and Hank was a little more at ease. The two had walked about a mile when Mark spotted a bench and plopped down on it. He smiled, reaching down to scratch the dog’s head as Hank sank to the ground with a pant. A petite blonde sat next to him, with what seemed to be twins fast asleep in a stroller on the other side of her. She was ranting on about something and Mark assumed she was on the phone until she suddenly stopped talking. When he met her gaze, it seemed as if she was waiting for a response. “I’m sorry, were you talking to me?” he asked, brow raised.

It had been a long day and all Tess wanted to do was just go home to curl up and read, but she couldn’t. She was working the closing shift tonight at the bar which Tess didn’t mind, more tips, but it was now closing time and when the brunette heard the bell ring on the door and felt the cold air from the rain come in the women rolled her eyes and played with the rim of the bottle that she was putting away “Sorry, we’re closing in five minutes.” Not even bothering to face the stranger, Tessa sighed and continued to run her finger along the tope of the empty bottle

More often than not, Mark liked to have a night out on the town to ‘clear his head’. Usually alone, he’d take an Uber from bar to bar until he had drank enough booze to drown his sorrows- not that he had many of those anyway. At the last stop on his little escapade, he managed to stumble into an empty bar, his hues immediately making contact with the backside of a leggy brunette standing behind the counter. Before he could say a word, she cut him off to tell him she was closing up. “Five minutes?” he repeated, mouth twisting into a sly smirk. “Well that gives me just enough time to have one drink and ask the pretty bartender for her name then, hm?” One thing about Mark was, he never took “no” for an answer. After all, he was a Miller. “Whiskey, neat please,” he said without waiting for her to respond. He slid into the nearest barstool, hands resting on the cool surface of the counter, Rolex gleaming on his wrist.

( chris pine, thirty-six, cismale ) by chance have you met MARK MILLER yet? i hear HE has lived in PIONEER SQUARE for THIRTY-SIX YEARS and works as a CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY. i’m surprised you haven’t met them yet but for when you do, i hear they can be quite CYNICAL but also PERSUASIVE. for whatever reason they remind me of TAILORED SUITS, WHISKEY NEAT, & MONEY. Mark was born in Seattle, Washington in 1982 to two newlyweds, Carlyle and Colette Miller. His parents, both well known attorneys, were obsessed with work and never home while Mark was raised by his nanny. As an only child, he spent most of his childhood in quiet solitude, despite going to a prestigious private school. The lack of attention he was receiving at home greatly impacted his behavior while away from home. Because he acted out in school and began to stain the family’s reputation, Mark was moved into public schooling. His parents thought it would place some perspective on things and show him how lucky he truly was. The bad behavior only got worse in his teen years, although it was quickly swept under the rug by his father. Mark knew nothing of responsibility. Instead, his father bailed him out time & time again. He was promised not only his trust fund but also the family business if he could get his act together, graduate high school, and pull his grades up high enough to be accepted into Harvard, where several generations on his father’s side had attended. This seemed like a fair trade for Mark at the time, who was only seeing dollar signs. After graduating from Harvard Law School with a specialization in criminal defense, Mark moved back to Seattle to claim his inheritance- the family business. His father, proud of his only son, retired upon Mark returning and handed over the reigns. Mark now runs Miller Law Firm as a defense attorney. He is well known for working with assumed guilty clients to either lighten their sentence or get their cases completely dismissed. Mark is trusted among Seattle’s elites for his confidentiality and ability to “go the extra mile”. So far, he has only lost two cases in his almost eight years of being head of his law firm.
