Big, beautiful boy .
So helpful. Thank you, Bert.
Such a helpful boy... sleeping on the half step for mom's bad knee.
Bert, Christmas 2019
My beautiful smiley boy, Bert, passed away yesterday morning. He was 9 years old. Everyone loved him and everyone who met him couldn't help but comment on how sweet natured and pretty he was.
For such a big cat (15 lbs -- all muscle and fluff), he had the smallest, high-pitched meow. At night he would walk around with his favorite stuffed toy, a grey rabbit, and cry. He sounded like a little ghost, "bwooop!" .... "bwooop!" Even though he slept all day, he didn't like it when his peoples went up to bed.
He was such a huggy boy, always smiling, always purring when he got any attention. He LOVED to be dragged around, and would purposely throw himself down on the floor almost out of reach so you would have to drag him to you for pats.
His purrs, every time you woke him or surprised him, sounded like a pigeon noise. He had a twitchy spot on his back that would make him "bloop" when you touched it. And an adorable grey spot on one of his back legs. He didn't like his back paws touched and would pull them back into his lazy sleepy body like a snail if you poked one.
Bert's favorite play thing was a white paper bag handle. He was usually pretty lazy and laidback but would race across the room for that bag handle. He was so huge but graceful -- hopping over my lap like a bunny.
Bert was a kitten at heart and it made losing him so much harder than any pet I've ever lost because it was like losing a baby. It was so sudden and, because of COVID, we didn't get to say goodbye.
After a couple of days of lethargy and poor appetite (he LOVED food), we noticed his ears, lips, and nose started to look jaundiced. They found a blockage in his gallbladder bile duct, but after exploratory surgery, discovered it was inoperable, likely cancer. We had to make the difficult decision to let him go rather than trying to prolong his life another week, uncomfortable in a cone with stitches, knowing the jaundice would return.
At least he is no longer suffering. He was feeling well enough the day before surgery to eat (one of his favorite activities) and we got to spend Christmas with him. He was so incredibly loved and will be missed forever.
