How Journalism is viewed nowadays?
The role of journalism in modern society is multifaceted, including many various elements of people's lives. As more outlets emerge throughout the world, many more stories can be covered by various channels, implying that journalism plays an increasingly essential part in modern society and the absence of journalism would make the world dark and ignorant.
For decades, print journalism has served as a source of current events, information, and political news. The bulk of information was obtained from the local newspaper, which was published every morning, by watching the evening news or listening to radio. Journalism today is nothing like it was in the past. Newspaper readership has decreased dramatically as the advent of internet has become the standard. While broadcast journalism is still relevant, it is increasingly being merged into videos and linked to web sites such as YouTube, social media outlets like Facebook and Twitter, and personal blogs. Thanks to the internet and 24-hour news stations, we now have an abundance of news sources at our fingertips.
In today's society, journalists are no longer the only "news reporters." A journalist can be anyone because in today's era of mobile journalism, "non-journalists" are encouraged to participate in journalistic activities, and mobile phones are considered to as the "new pen." As we completely embrace today’s journalism, many people viewed it as meaningful and helpful tool for them to be aware of the issues and events, while some people would see it as anomalous atmosphere in which to gather information because there is too much news and the audience cannot always figure out the veracity of the news they see online.
Hence, the responsibility of Philippine Journalism to the public must take priority over whatever responsibilities they may have to other parties, such as employers or government agencies. They should always strive for truth, accuracy, impartiality and accountability to serve the humanity.
