A mother goddess is a goddess who represents, or is a personification of nature, motherhood, fertility, creation, destruction or who embodies the bounty of the Earth. When equated with the Earth or the natural world, such goddesses are sometimes referred to as Mother Earth or as the Earth Mother. Mother goddess is the main female goddess in many world mythologies. The worship of the image of the woman mother as the supreme deity dates back to the Paleolithic era.
Mokosh (Makosh) is a Slavic goddess mentioned in the Primary Chronicle, protector of women's work and women's destiny. She watches over spinning and weaving, shearing of sheep, and protects women in childbirth.
Mokosh was the only female deity whose idol was erected by Vladimir the Great in his Kiev sanctuary along with statues of other major pagan gods.
Oranta (orans - “a praying one”) is one of the main types of the image of the Mother of God, representing Her with arms raised and spread out to the sides, palms outward, that is, in the traditional gesture of intercessory prayer. A similar prayer posture has been known since Old Testament times. The first images of the Virgin Oranta without a Baby are already found in Roman catacombs. This iconographic scheme is most widely used in the post- iconoclastic period (end of the 1st century). The apse of St. Sophia Cathedral in Kiev (11th century) contains one of the most famous mosaic images of Oranta (height 5 m 45 cm). One of the epithets assigned to this image is the Unbreakable Wall.

Matriarchal features were inherent in the post-war period. This was due to the tragic events of the war, and a sharp reduction in the number of men, when women had to repeatedly increase their significance and “visibility”. Under the patriarchal external world order of the Late Stalin era, this image of protective and impressive female power became a background that exceeded the power of the foreground. It turned out that visually the figure of a woman is able to be “in front” and even obscure the male figure.

In a way, in the monuments of Mother-Motherlands with swords a mixture of two different female mythological characters occurs: a “warrior maidens” and a “matron/mothers”.

A warrior maiden, a female warrior - an archetypal image, a fictional female character, often of royal blood, who has a strong character and is engaged in a typically "male" business, usually war. Societies where rituals of worshiping the Nature dominated, were gynocentric; a model of such a society can be seen in Old Norse paganism and northern Wicca (natural magic), reflected in the mythological images of the northern warrior maidens, the Valkyries. Thus, such images of virgin warriors are a relic of religious cult or magical rite servants. In a comparative analysis of archaic myths of the East and West, two categories are distinguished among female mythological characters: “warrior maidens” and “matron” - “mothers/spouse”.

Critics noted that the sculptor used the well-known motif of the warrior maiden with a sword, and did not bring anything fundamentally new to it.

After the removal of Stalin monument, the Armenian leadership decided to erect another monument on the same pedestal that would become a collective image of the Armenian people. There was no official opening ceremony for the monument. In those years, it was not easy for many people to come to terms with the fact that Stalin was no more there, and a woman replaced him. But later people fell in love with "Mother Armenia".

The atheism proclaimed in the USSR actually turned out to be a mixture of the most diverse beliefs, superstitions and customs. Orthodoxy in Russia coexisted with pagan rituals for many centuries. “Traditional paganism” in the Soviet Union was intertwined with the cult of the ancient gods and goddesses, who were not only not named, but also not implied. They literally were not “under the mind” in the subconscious of the individual. Only the collective unconscious unexpectedly expressed their features. In this sense, the cult of the Mother was visually very strong.
