From its very beginning, the Soviet Union waged a ferocious war against all traditional religion with the ultimate goal of eradicating “the barbaric beliefs” of its citizens. In the early 1920s, the city municipality of Kyiv barred Jews from entering the local synagogue. They locked the building and forbade the community from holding prayer services.
On Rosh Hashana in 1925, the Jewish community audaciously decided they would not be stopped by the law. They entered the courtyard of the locked synagogue and, in an act of defiance and despite the potential consequences, they held the traditional prayer services in honor of the New Year. The photo captures this act of bravery.
