I realised I have come to a point in my derby life where I've forgotten / (at the time) been too lazy to rinse out my mouthguard, for the next time I've needed to use it I used to be so careful about washing my stuff so they wouldn't get gross and now I'm just...what even happened o_0
One thing that will never stop amazing me, is that despite all the years someone has been skating, no matter how much they train, they will one day ineviteable always fall on their ass
and im not talking about falling after a hit, im talkng about skating around the track, suddenly losing their balance, flailing their arms about, screeching and then hitting the floor.
that makes me feel liberated. because no matter how bad you think you are, or inexperienced, what it comes down to is no one is perfect, you always have room to improve and you will,
but also -- you wear shoes with wheels on them. Stuff is gonna happen.
I did it for me (gifs via 1 / 2)
A case study of the costs involved in becoming a roller derby referee.
Reffing ain't cheap. Neither is playing I understand, but I've come to learn that reffing is usually more expensive because of greater amount of travel involved. So in honor of my 100th game I decided to do some math about just how much I’m spending on the sport.
Interesting read!
I found this blog entry from a player that I thought was a pretty wonderful read -- because no matter how far we've come in our Roller Derby adventure, we forget just how much progress has been made.
"...my name is Bunnie, I was new once, just like you, so was everyone in here. We all started just like you, don’t be shy, before you know it you’ll have as much skill as anyone on the track so let’s start with some basics. See that girl out there getting 35 in 5? Two years ago she couldn’t cross over. Oh, and that one that just laid out one of the guys? Yeah, last summer she was holding on to the walls. You’re going to be great one day. Don’t worry your pretty little head, just get out there and skate.I put on some confidence, because I know I’ve got some skill I never had before, but let’s be real- I know my weaknesses. I know where I can improve. My turn stops? Slow. Skate backward? Ehh, ok. And ask me to skate counter-derby direction? My legs are like robots that never got that upgrade. Those things can get better. And like I said before, everyone has something to improve. Don’t let that stress you out- just get on the track and do some work.
I wish all the time that I had a video of everyone’s first practice. Just so you know- everyone sucks at first. Even speed skaters have to learn to juke. Jam skaters have 2677894682_72238c1fc1to learn some strategy. Everyone has to learn how to hit. And yes. There will always be someone better than you, but they weren’t always. They got that way the same way you will- practice, practice, and more practice. Hold your head up and know that this is a very hard sport. There is no shame in learning. With a little patience and a lot of determination you are well on your way to derby greatness."

SISU Mouthguard Review
Like I mentioned before, I got the SISU mouthguard for Christmas, and I've been using it for about two weeks during practices and scrims. So here's my review, hopefully this will be helpful for those of you who are still indicisive about getting this mouthguard. To my help I shall be using a cast of my teeth (hehehe) to show you how this might look inside the mouth when you're wearing it.
Please note this is from the point of view of my experience with this mouthguard -- so please keep this in mind. You might have different opinions and thoughts.
! warning: Image heavy post ! So, let's begin..
. . . . .
A. -- The 2.4 mouthguard is the thickest version yet, compared to the 1.6. Though it may not look like much, it's quite sturdy once it's molded and set.
B. -- The package comes with instructions, so read those before you set to molding and using your mouthguard. (I could post the leaflet in a bigger version if anyone needs it.)
C. -- I molded my mouthguard by pouring some boiled water into a small bowl, waited a couple of seconds before placing it inside for it to soften.
D. -- The soft mouthguard, I thought, was alot like the texture of polymer clay. When I scooped it up from the hot water, a light contour of my fork could be seen (I switched to a plastic one after that, I think I may have been too rough when I 'forked' it up). When I soon after put it into my mouth to mold it after my teeth, I could see my thumbprints lightly etched there from where I kept it in place (so be careful if you have long fingernails or scratch it).
-- The process of molding it took a really short amount of time. And if it doesn't fit the way you want it to, you can just drop it into hot water again and redo the process. I re-did mine three times before I was content with it (I think I'll do it again soon though).
. . .
E. -- Now, onto the inspecton.
1. As seen from the side..
2. ...From below..
3. ...and from the front.
As you can see from image nr 1 and 2, not all the teeth are covered. I tried to shape the mouthguard while it was still moldable (and maybe accidentally stretched the thing which you're NOT supposed to do because you can DESTROY IT) so it covered atleast my back teeth -- if I couldn't cover the sides of my teeth, I wanted to get the part where I could bite down on the mouthguard. It didn't really work.
I've heard from several players in my league that this is the same for them (so my own mouth can't be that big). But, since it covers the rest of the teeth enough, and when I bite down the back teeth won't connect anyway since it's elevated, you probably won't feel there's anything missing on the back row (which I don't). Still, I feel it would've been nice to have ALL the teeth covered by a mouthguard. But perhaps the length doesn't matter aslong as your front teeth are covered.
On image number 3, the edges of the mouthguard go quite a ways high up to protect your front teeth. That's really nice (it says on the instructions that most of the guard piece should be on the fronts/outside of your teeth and gums, so it isn't all up your palate doing no good).
. . .
F. The final word;
I was going to do a pro and cons list but.. Let me say this mouthguard works in terms of speaking/drinking and it doesn't fall out when you open your mouth! It stays on, and it's proof that it will stay on when you try to take it out and you have to pull it off. And that's another thing I like, you get less germs in your mouth because you don't have to keep taking it on and off.
I like the thickness, I think a 1.6 would've been to thin for me -- I just really like having something to bite on. My prevous mouthguard was a KENKA silicone one, I enjoyed it, and I could chew it, like a toy. Heh. So, yeah I would recommend this for people to try out.
. . .
That concludes this review. I really wanted to show you guys how the mouthguard fit using the cast of my teeth. Hope you guys found this valuable!

New Year New Season
Hope everyone is having a wonderful start to the new year, and getting ready for the new derby season in one way or another (I haven't moved from my couch).
So, a little update of sorts; I got the SISU 2.4 mouthguard for christmas and am planning on doing a sort of review of the thing up next, if anyone is interested in seeing that. I have mixed feelings about it -- you will see why.
Have a great monday back at school/work or on the couch :P
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
:D
I want Lorde to come up with a derby name for me..
