HAIL COLUMBIA (America 250)

To celebrate 250 Years of American Independence, I drew Crawford, a US Marine, a Boarding Party Seaman, plus a British and French soldier, including Columbia herself singing "Hail, Columbia"... The Brit ain't handling it, while the Frenchman just swayed along with the rhythm.

There are two versions of the artwork:

- The first version is a tribute to J.C. Leyendecker and his illustrations for the Saturday Evening Post.

- The second version is a Blue background with a gigantic 250 behind the characters, and in front of them are a bundle of banners with the words "HAIL COLUMBIA" and the years 1776 and 2026 colored in gold.

Things to take note of:

- The woman in front is Columbia, the personification of the United States of America.

- The presence of William H. Crawford and the presence of a French and British soldier heavily implies that this is meant to be Roscoff, and a hint of the original idea for the artwork.

- The US Marine is likened to Duke Nukem, while the Boarding Party sailor is likened to Lionel Richie.

- Originally, a third version of the artwork replaces Columbia with a random French peasant girl, and all the characters (minus Crawford and the peasant) are all bloodied as if they have seen combat against the Cannibals. This was scrapped entirely, since the main purpose of the artwork was to celebrate 250 Years of American Independence.

- The original concept was a Landscape painting where the Marines and crew of the USS Constitution (along with Crawford) sing "Hail Columbia", while British and French troops dispose of the corpses on the deck of the ship by throwing them overboard. This was scrapped entirely due to time constraints.

[WIP] Roscoff the Musical!!!

In reality, this is something for 4 July 2026 for the 250th anniversary of American Independence.

What to expect in the final product:

The final product will contain two versions of the artwork. One has the characters behind a blue background with a gigant 250, and in the foreground, there will be a large banner reading "HAIL COLVMBIA!" with the years 1776 and 2026 on the top and bottom. Behind the text in the foreground are a few streamers with the colors of red, white and blue along with a few stars.

The characters in the background are William H. Crawford, Duke Nukem as a Marine, and then Lionel Richie as a US Navy Boarding Party Seaman. The characters in the foreground are a British soldier of the 23rd Regiment of Foot, Columbia (the personification of America), and a French Soldier of the Garde Nationale.

Originally, Columbia was supposed to be a French Peasant Girl, but was changed to Columbia to further give the context of the artwork. Columbia will wear a striped shirt and apron, a blue shawl with star patterns and a gold and white corset and white skirt.

A planned third version where the setting is on the USS Constitution was scrapped. It was going to rain and would have Duke Nukem, Lionel Richie, the British and French Soldier covered in blood to imply that they have been fighting Zombies.

The original plan was supposed to be a landscape painting where several Marines and Seamen sing "Hail Columbia" while the French and British soldiers dispose of the undead by throwing them overboard the USS Constitution. The plan was scrapped because of time.

Der Preußischer Stechschritt.

Just a drawing of a platoon of Prussian Soldiers marching to battle, nothing suspicious here... but the faces on some of the troops say otherwise.

The Goose-Step (German: Stechschritt) is a type of lockstep march used by the Germans in the 18th Century until the late-20th Century, starting from the Kingdom of Prussia and lastly used by the German Democratic Republic. At rare occasions, the Bundeswehr (The current form of the German Army) uses the Goose-step in some of their live drills, most notably in 2017 where it was executed by a live band complete with a platoon in a public event at Düsseldorf.

There are only a few countries that still use the goose-step, most notably Chile, which still holds Prussian traditions in many of their military parades. North Korea also uses a modified form of the goose-step which includes a slight bounce when soldiers march, and the extension of the leg is higher and less-relaxed compared to the traditional version where the steps are more relaxed.

​Things to take note of:

- The image here is the main inspiration for this artwork. The image itself has Reichswehr soldiers marching past with their rifles slung on the troops' shoulders. Behind them, the military band makes their exit.

- There are flowers placed on some places on the soldiers' uniforms. This is customary to many German women in which they offer the soldiers flowers before going into battle or when leaving to fulfill their duty.

- Originally, a lamp post was going to be present in the background, but was removed entirely. I'd also like to think this drawing takes place in Leipzig.

- The 1. Garde-Regiment zu Fuß officer is the one who died in Kaub.

- Streamers were originally going to appear in the drawing, but I got too lazy to draw all of them individually. I was also thinking of drawing a Schnauzer walking with the soldiers on the bottom right, but I've decided against it.

- The signage on the top left reads Der Tropfende Kessel. Translated from German reads The Leaky Cauldron. This is a reference to the famous wizarding pub that is featured in the Harry Potter books.
