THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING 2001, dir. Peter Jackson
oc talk: Hitch makes most of his outfits from scratch and sometimes it's an unorthodox or messy style of goth/alt look. I think that's truly what makes his contribution to the scene real especially considering the fact that he is a weirdo who makes anime/manga inspired drawings and uploads them to his art page.
he's a "cringe" trans guy that's a reflection of many people I know that exists (and a reflection of the life I slightly missed out on as a late teen/early adult)
he's a bit of an outcast for many reasons but I think there's a level of authenticity when making a character like him that's "alt and cringe and openly queer". a character like him could exists in many other ways, but it would specifically exist to punch down on people like him for overlapping with Marginalized labels + being heavily neurodivergent coded.
tldr; I like Hitch kinda being true to himself because I know many trans people that are very creative and open about themselves. very authentic.
in case folk outside the UK aren't abreast of our news, the British press just hounded a black academic to death
a rough timeline of events (from memory, there may be inaccuracies, feel free to correct me if I'm wrong)
Cambridge professor of sociology Jason Arday is accused of plagiarism by another academic
the accuser is a "race realist" who believes that in a true meritocracy all university professors would be white. this is somehow not acknowledged much during the entire ordeal
this leads to several days of media coverage demanding an investigation, or that Arday is expelled from his post immediately
somehow this accusation that has no effect on the lives of 99.99% of the population becomes FRONT PAGE NEWS in all the newspapers for multiple days, above anything else happening in the UK or the world at large
following intense media scrutiny, Arday resigns his post as a Cambridge professor
today, august 14th, days after resigning, Arday is found dead at his home in Battersea
the British tabloid press remains, and will always be, fucking evil
The way people are acting about Mangione's guilty plea is pissing me off. Again, much of the evidence they had against Mangione was seriously flawed or capable of being planted. Much of it should have been inadmissable. This is something we shouldn't cede because guilt needs to be proven beyond reasonable doubt in court. They did not do that. Many reasonable doubts remained, particularly for police forces we know have a history of fabricating evidence. Further, the strategy of the state is to pressure defendants into putting in a guilty plea on some kind of bargain. The reason Mangione did this is to get around the federal death penalty. Every day, people in America plead guilty to crimes they didn't do, because the cost of being found guilty by trial is too severe, and they have been intimidated or coerced to compliance. We have reason to believe Mangione was physically tortured at the beginning of all this. The guy has been the target of years of media campaign. There's no way he would have gotten a fair trial. As soon as he was arrested, everyone just accepted it was him. He could have gotten the death penalty. This is the exact kind of circumstance where people plead guilty to shit they didn't do.
It is less about this specific case and more about the principle of the matter. Particularly in a case so high-profile, we need to scrutinize the case of the state as much as humanly possible. We need to maintain awareness of how the state operates, how it prosecutes, how it punishes. This same pattern has played out with unknowable quantities of other people being ground to paste in the machinery of the prison industrial complex. This is a conversation everyone in America needs to be having. These are maneuvers every American needs to be aware of, particularly as the police state kicks into higher gear than we've ever seen it before. We cannot trust state prosecution. You need to maintain your skepticism, not for this case, but for all the cases that are going to follow it. We all need to hang onto this together.
Not even our best scientists can figure out what's going on behind that expression!
