So if you’re looking for a classic cup that doesn’t leave you jittery as a SoCal fault, this is your brew. It’s big on flavor, with a rich, deep body and lasting chocolate tones, but light on caffeine. It’s processed via a Swiss Water method, which strips caffeine away without the use of abrasive chemicals. It’s a winner in most any brew method and plays well ink-black or matched with dairy.

El Salvador Las Mercedes Maracaturra Dry Process

Maracaturra is tough to find. It's a hybrid varietal, part Maragogype, part Caturra. Like its distant cousin Pacamara (also a Maragogype hybrid), Maracaturra beans are as big as boulders, sized like old-school jelly beans, and daunting enough to send your grinder into a cold sweat. But the varietal is less common than Pacamara. There just aren't many farms that grow Maracaturra, and among those that do, the crop represents a fraction of their output. Still, if you enjoy unique varietals, it's worth seeking out.

This Maracaturra comes from El Salvador's Las Mercedes farm, an estate which gathers more acclaim with each passing harvest. Las Mercedes grows loads of varietals, but their Maracaturra is a standout. It's dry processed; the cherries set bare in the sun until the fruit grows brittle enough to strip from the bean. Occasionally, dry processed coffees can bear funky notes, but this one eschews ferment for some surprising sweetness.

Cane sugar cola opens the cup, followed by toasted marshmallow and a nice hit of cocoa. The acid, while present, is restrained and deferential to the cup's rounder elements. The balance is wonderful, and the profile is unusual, all of which make for an exciting brew. So if you're a fan of Maracaturra, or if you just want to try a new varietal, grab yourself a bag.

Kenya Nyeri Peaberry

Kenyan coffees are like wines: acidic, bright, and packed with tannins that lend the cup a wonderful, dry quality. It's an iconic profile, and our goal in sourcing Kenyan coffees is to find a cup that checks all of its boxes. This coffee does just that, and then some.

Composed entirely of peaberry beans (dense little mutant spheres) this coffee comes from Nyeri, one of the finest growing regions in Kenya. The grapefruit here pounds like a drum. It's mountainous in scope, suffusing the cup with solar bright tones. Alongside the zest, you'll catch spices: clove, cinnamon stick, cardamon, all diced into splinters that could lounge beside the fruit in a bag of orange spice tea. There's wine-like acidity at play, fresh Beaujolais, and a touch of pomegranate tannins. The profile pulls off a unique Kenyan magic trick: it lands the acid and citrus without being sour, and it pairs its tea-like qualities with a thick, brooding body.

Cup of Excellence Winner Ethiopia Keramo Niguse Gemeda, Dry Process

Strawberry, Cherry, Lemon, Concord Grape, Jasmine

We won't bury the lead here: this coffee won Ethiopia's 2020 Cup of Excellence. That would be a big deal in any country, but it's particularly remarkable in Ethiopia, an origin many consider the most remarkable in the world. From sip-one, the gold medal showing makes infinite sense. This coffee isn't just good; it's something approaching otherworldly.

Hailing from a producer named Niguse Gemeda, this brew represents a rare combination of regional exceptionalism and superior production. Niguse's farm rests in the Keramo community, a small enclave within Ethiopia's much-celebrated Sidamo region. Keramo boasts mild daily temperatures and some of the most altitudinous points in the area. As a producer, Niguse is as exacting as they come. First, he selects cherries for ripeness, picking them for peak flavor. Then he places the cherries on raised beds to dry in the sun for 19 days, an unusually lengthy timeframe, which informs the coffee's eventual quality. So how does it taste?...

Explosive. Volcanic fruits. Berries. Candy sweetness. Sparkling acidity. A prominent strawberry note forms the profile's core. Backing it up are ripe cherry ribbons and tart lemon. As the cup cools, its body gets juicy, reminiscent of sweet concord grapes and dry cranberry cocktail. And playing in the background is a gang of florals, with jasmine standing out above the rest.

Sourcing great coffee is as much a passion as drinking it. We couldn't be prouder to be carrying this one.
