It was not the way I expected it to be but I am so thankful it happened!
Since EstĂŠreo Picnic festival released the line up and Martin Garrix was on it I couldnât think about anything else but meeting him. In 2015 I went to Sao Paulo, Brazil to see him at the EDC Festival, I got front row and it was unbelievable but I wasnât able to go to the airport nor the hotel he was staying at, so now that he was finally coming to Colombia, my country, I knew I could do something.
Saturday March the 25th, just a day after Ultra, Martin Garrix was coming to my country for the first time ever, I had lots of expectations for this day but nothing seemed to be going the way I planned it. My best friend and I went to the airport in the morning to wait for Martijn, there were already like 10 people with signs and wearing hoodies and snapbacks from his merchandising, I thought he might not come out since they were very noisy and well, he was flying on a private jet, he didnât have to pick up luggage and he could do the passport control at the private area.
When Martijn uploaded a snap showing he was in a car we knew he had left the airport and we were wasting our time there. Nobody had any idea of the hotel he was heading to so we preferred to go to the venue of the festival and ensure front row for the show. I was feeling sad, I spent the whole night tweeting and DMing him and his team and just Lorenzo Depa noticed me but it was just a like, I got no answers. Earlier that week my best friend snapped Louis Van Baar and he replied twice but then he never opened the conversation anymore.
We arrived to the festival and went directly to the stage he was going to play; we had to wait for 9h and a half, 5 shitty bands, drunk people, a downpour (thanks God we were inside a tent) and at 1.30am, finally, the intro started to be played. It was the piano instrumental of Animals, I had flashbacks from that time I saw him in Brazil, I got very emotional but this time it was going to be a thousand times better cause the stage was very close.
The whole set was amazing, I couldnât see the streaming of the Ultra cause I was flying to BogotĂĄ (I am from another city) so the new music he played were a surprise for me. I loved one he didnât play at Ultra but did in Colombia; I canât wait for him to release it, if he is ever going to do it lol.
While enjoying the show I was trying to get Louis or Damianâs attention, they were walking down the stage doing their job but they totally ignored me. Semi Badreddine was in a corner and we made eye contact like a million times so I tried to ask him if he could help me meet Martijn but he said no. I couldnât help feeling sad again, I had Martijn playing the best set ever literally in front of me and I was not able to do anything to hug him, to tell him something, to get a picture.
My best friend and I made a sign but I didnât want to open it cause it would disturb people behind us and it was probably not going to work out, the sign said âMartin, can you come down and take a pic with us?â I thought it was better to enjoy the last song and to stop having faith in something that it was not going to happen but it was the last choice so we held it up high. I couldnât see if Martijn read it, my best friend was sure he did but the girl on my other side said he didnât.
The show was finished and everybody on the stage disappeared, Aubrey and some people were taking everything apart but we couldnât get out yet, we had to wait for the crowd to leave. Everyone was talking about how amazing it was and I was still in shock, he looked genuinely happy and it meant a lot to me. He is used to play at massive venues and this one was not even the main stage at that festival, so I was glad he enjoyed it too.
Suddenly we started listening to people screaming and when I looked at my right, Martijn himself was walking near the barrier, he was taking pictures but not with everyone, I felt like he was going to pass me by so I stopped him with my hand on his chest and told him that I was the one who asked for it. I handed him my phone and he took the selfie, unfortunately a girl behind me tried to be in the picture and pushed my head with her hand and I couldnât get a better one but whenever I look at that picture I remember the moment and I feel so happy it actually happened.
I had lost my hope, the whole team ignored me and the probabilities of him coming down off the stage were one in a million, but he did it! I shouldnât have underestimate him, he loves his fans <3 so, to whoeverâs reading this and thinks it is never going to happen to you, donât ever lose your hope! -Sara LĂłpez
