Short, Quick Goodbye

Well here I go with my final blog post on Old Earth.

I think I must begin by acknowledging the great adventure and opportunity that lies ahead of me. This is truly a once in a lifetime opportunity and failure to jump would surely result in a waste of one. The current state of Old Earth leaves many of us with no hope, but has presented this wonderful opening. The chance to create history and be part of a new generation; setting foot on fresh soil.

While this initial excitement is present, it is also underpinned by fear. Will I adapt? Will communication with old earth be lost? It will be interesting to see if I still have doubts about anything. Considering I have travelled to a new planet in a motion which was until recently regarded as impossible. I mean “jumping”? This is truly the stuff of science fiction. I guess it is only natural to be afraid of the unknown and unimaginable. I hope I can adapt and prosper.

I will keep this short and sweet. I depart soon and I'm making sure I have everything I wish to take with me. Hopefully I can update this blog on New Earth, time will tell.

This will be my last entry as a resident of planet Earth.

The time is finally upon me, as I type this I am currently sitting, being transported to the vehicle that will take me to New Earth. As I checked in I looked around me at my fellow New Earthers, everyone is buzzing with excitement, ideas, adventure! There is a sense of camaraderie as we all nervously check in and receive our hand passes’. Which seem very other wordly.

  I have already made some new friends which has put my mind at ease, as we chat about the possibilities before for. All the good we can do out there on New Earth, things things we can build, and influences we share from certain genres.

  As we sit here now, inching nearer to our final destination on earth, I look around and see such amazing potential and promise for our new home.

At a moment like this I have this song playing in my mind.

Take my love. Take my land. Take me where I cannot stand. I don’t care, I’m still free. You can’t take the sky from me.

Take me out to the black. Tell em I ain’t comin’ back. Burn the land And boil the sea. You can’t take the sky from me.

There’s no place I can be Since I found Serenity. But you can’t take the sky from me.

And it is both comforting and appropriate, and as I look up to strange, new stars, I know I will be hearing it again…. Because no matter what hardships we might endure, I know that we are building something out of this world. We are reaching out into the black, and giving it hope….

8 Jump Essentials

The countdown continues. Four days until I make the jump and I must say I have greatly warmed to the idea. Deep thought aside, I have been considering my travel essentials for the trip. It may not be a long journey but I would hate to be left twiddling my thumbs.

So here are my “8 Jump Essentials”

Wet Wipes – If the jump to New Earth is anything like public transport at this time of year it is guaranteed there will be the unrequired presence of heating. Combine this with the obvious tension and we have a recipe for some intense sweating. Stay fresh, stay safe!

Nintendo DS – Well I technically don't own this item...However my girlfriend (who is also jumping, phew!) owns one. I've recently purchased Pokemon Diamond to play on it. This will be the first one I have played since Pokemon Silver back in the day. If it's anything like Silver then I will be anything but a social magnet.

Headphones – Sometimes there are just noises that must be drowned out. I'm sure obnoxious travellers and crying babies are a possibility, thus is life.

Snacks – It wouldn't be a journey if I didn't get peckish at some point. Snacks should be present to cover both the Sweet and Savoury categories. The essentials being bourbon biscuits and wotsits.

Leisure Wear – While the lure of stepping foot on New Earth in your Sunday best may seem like the best thing to do..I would argue that it isn't. Comfortable clothes are a must for any period of travelling. My weapons of choice are cotton joggy bottoms and comfy hoody.

Passport? - At this moment in time I do not have all my migration forms returned and ready. I'm cutting it abit fine, but I guess it adds to the adventure.

Camera – It seems I have a window seat, assuming there are windows. This will be the first step in documenting my new life.

An Open Mind – I feel this is the most important thing. New Planet, New Surroundings and New Beginnings.

So I finally got round to doing some stuff for this small trip that is looming. I have uploaded to the archive and have posted my possessions for sale on Gumtree. 

So what did I upload? Well I thought long and hard about this trying to be reflective for now but also provide insight into what our society was like when the future generation of New Earth visit the Old Earth Museum. I trawled the archive to see what was already submitted trying to get a feel for the people whom I will be cohabiting this new planet with and I was, well, I dunno, underwhelmed. Maybe it is me and my critical design brain that makes me read into things too much and always try to communicate a message, but really Cat’s!!! Ah maybe I’m biased as to me they are just a big allergy, but how many people want to submit their Cat to archive and what does this show future generations on New Earth and about where we came from?? I guess it’s a personal thing, the nostalgia associated with their pets that is the reason for these submissions. I guess what it done was made me realise how important my work will be when I get there.

So baring all this in mind I thought I would take my goldfish!!! That’s a joke incase you didn’t gather, maybe my sense of humour should be archived i think my wife would agree. Anyway I am rambling pre-migration nerves. I reflected over the past year or so of my life here on Earth and what I have learned from that, what I want to be reminded of and also what this can teach future generations on New Earth. 

Sadly there is one member of my family who will not be travelling and that is our daughter Daisy who sadly passed last year at only one day old. Now I don’t need a reminder of this devastation and sadness and I do not submit this memory to remind others of a sadness which I would not wish upon any living sole.

However what I feel this does is give hope, yes it is sad and no matter where we go whether this planet or another sad things will inevitably happen. But no matter how sad or challenging we can always continue, persevere and overcome. 

This is what I will be submitting to the archive hope and belief that nothing is insurmountable.

New Earth - My Hopes

As it dawns on me that, in but a few cycles of the moon, I shall be departing for New Earth. I start to think about the future. I still can’t believe this is really happening, and in my lifetime.

Journeying to a an unknown planet to build a new society is a sci fi dream, but it is also fraught with so many unknowns. Rules and laws to be made, harmony struck with our new environment.

If I have learned anything from the high piled sci fi books/dvds etc is that humans have an immense capacity to do good, our lives are so short yet we burn so brightly. Together we can achieve something so awe inspiring, something that could be a beacon to the universe that shows our true potential.

So, my hopes for New Earth are simply:

That we learn from our past,our literature. Use them as a fire to fuel a united society.

One that lives in harmony with itself and the world around it.Pulling on resources like sustainability, acceptance, love to create something that grows from  the planet, not building onto it.

living in harmony with all life, not just that which is convenient. Humans are full of life,love, imagination. We just need to set it free…

10 Things I Hope To See On New Earth

In the past few days I have seen a couple of projections in Edinburgh. They slightly raised my spirits and made me reconsider my attitude towards my impending jump.

With that I have created a list of 10 things I hope to see on New Earth.

Franchised Coffee Outlets – I won't name names but these places tend to make a mean hot chocolate. I recognise the importance of coffee in certain peoples lives, but the aftermath of a large hot chocolate with whipped cream and marshmallows is a truly euphoric sensation.

Monsters / Myths – Growing up I was obsessed with the idea of a plesiosaur living in Loch Ness. In a way I think it made me a curious child and helped blur the lines between reality and myth. Will the history of Earth be taught? Dinosaurs and ridiculous marine life? If not I may have to go out my way to educate the next generation.

QOTSA – I haven't heard much news on whether Queens of The Stone Age will be gracing New Earth with their intense brand of rock. They still have years of beautiful music to make and I hope I can hear it.

Pokemon – The technological advances which enabled jumping are truly extraordinary. With this considered surely making pokemon real is achievable? I'm picking Charmander!

Playstation 4 – It's official release is roughly 3 months after I jump. Hopefully a few batches make their way to New Earth.

Fridge Raiders – Never has there been a snack so tasty and efficient. Who cares what percent chicken they contain; they are the ideal life companion.

Used Cars – Can people jump with their cars? I would hate to have to finance a brand new car. Think about the depreciation and monthly costs!

Chael P Sonnen – The 'American Gangster' must continue his dominance on New Earth before travelling the rest of the universe, undefeated and undisputed.

Affordable Apple Products – I realise this is long shot, maybe some sort of New Earth vat relief is an option.

Happiness – Without sounding soppy, I think this is the most important thing on the list. This migration will mark some peoples fresh starts and the beginning to a life of opportunity. If after all this people still aren't happy with their lifes it will indeed be a sad existence.

Still no tickets starting to get a bit apprehensive now will they come in time, will there be time for a leaving party well priorities. The house is about sorted well when I say sorted my brother has agreed to buy it cash. The way I see it he is getting a bargain and I am helping him out with getting on the property ladder. Also he is fully accepting of the fact that if I do not get my tickets then he won’t be buying the house. This is a super bonus for me I could just imagine selling the house and then not migrating, then I would still be stuck on Old Earth and also homeless (and most likely in the divorce courts). After day when the post man arrives I check the mail excited, but still no tickets just the usual junk mail.

I have been thinking a lot more about what I want from New Earth and I just hope we can learn how to communicate again, I mean really communicate like the did in the olden days, you know like have a proper face to face conversation. I speak you listen, you speak I listen, not the current way like the current method. I type something on my phone screen you read it, your type something on your phone screen I read it. We are human we are set apart from other species because we have the ability of speech lets use this on New Earth.

Anyway from looking at http://www.leavingplanetearth.com/ migrations are due to start in four days, I’m not sure when the last lot leave this planet but it sure doesn’t leave me much time. Anyway I am away to sit by until tomorrows mail arrives with the anticipation that my tickets will be there.

5 of my New Earth fears!

With my decision made and migration looming, I think it is time to discuss some of my fears. I’ve made an effort to highlight 5 things I’m concerned about.

1.       Loss of familiarity – Well this is quite a vast topic. I’ve lived in the same house for 22 years of my life, made the same journeys, carried out the same activities. Despite this being the main reason I feel my life has fell into a generic slump, it is also controlled and comfortable. Will this journey to a new planet to start a new life ever resemble what I have at the moment…on the other hand I guess this is why I’m making the jump.

2.       New Surrounding – What will the architecture be like? how will the streets be laid out? Cities and towns have generalised layouts which seem to meet a certain criteria (e.g Entertainment, Food, Shops, etc). Will these conventional forms still exist? Or will we be introduced to a whole new way of living life within a community?

3.       New Friends/Social Groups – Luckily important people in my life will also be making the jump, but certain recurring characters in my life won’t. I think of my life as a long running tv show. My close friends are the main cast, but there are important characters who fill up the background and less important storylines. I may have to source some new supporting characters.

4.       Food Resources – It is well known that I am a fussy and frequent eater. With this considered I think it’s only right I express my concern about the food situation. What will be available? And how will it be obtained?

5.       And then some – The truth is I have more than 5 fears, but that still doesn’t mean I have made a bad decision…I guess. This list was abit ambitious and slightly misleading, but I guess it gives you more of an insight into me.

New Earth - #leavingplanetearth

In between some work I was thinking about my impending travel to new earth. Being a keen sci fi geek and general science geek Im excited to discover the wonders of my soon to be new home.

It got me thinking about what it would look like. Just how different from earth would it be? Which lead do this quick sketch I threw together in photoshop.

Will I be able to look up and see strange moons or even neighbouring planets in my sky so close you can see their surfaces in detail? Being free from light and other pollution I will be able to look up and see a strange, new galaxy before my eyes waiting to be charted and explored.

It fills me with a child like excitement that I have never lost, but to new heights! Every time I say new earth all I hear is the Doctor in my head rambling his string of  ’which makes it New New New New New New… New New New New New New…’ well you get the idea (if not watch doctor who season 2 ep 1! :D)

What will it be like being the first to stretch out into the black? Will it be like Terra Nova? Or Firefly even, trading and building so get by as we all shape a new society. Will there be a dominant language? Or a mixture of the most common/widely spoken/represented?  Linguistically speaking it will be fascinating to see the language of new earth develop as it absorbs and reflects the ever changing society. 

In the Verse (firefly) it is a mixture of english and chinese, which makes sense. With the adapting language, it will inevitably reflect in the culture that we will be building. There will be no strong influence from any one nation or culture, everyone will be involved in the shaping of the future. 

  Anyway enough rambling for just now, got plenty more work to be getting on with before my final days.

I'm joining the masses!

Well time has passed since my last blog update; time which has been spent contemplating…a little self exploration. The GFO announcement really caught me by surprise. After my initially scepticism I began assessing what I have and what I could gain or lose by migrating to New Earth.

The announcement seemed to promise opportunity and a path to creating history. The last few months of my life have been underwhelming. From graduating and remaining a part time sainsburys employee to making the same journeys every week. The familiar interior of my car is a tomb in which I transport myself from one generic location to the next. Never escaping an underlying lust for more.

Important people in my life are also making the jump. I guess this will lessen the blow that comes with the loss of familiarity. Will I be able to communicate with those on New Earth?

Questions aside, I can now confirm I will be making the jump!

I’ve made the decision, but it keeps playing over and over in my head.
