This video is a new direction for the Overgrown San Francisco project that I have spent a year creating. That project came about by simple fate, since I kept ruining into very strange items on the street. It came out very organically, I slowly built up a photographic catalog of discarded items, the one item that solidified the development of Overgrown SF is an Apple desktop computer that I found on the street. The computer seemed to be in great shape, I really wanted to take it home, even if I already had a computer, the only reason that I did not take it home is due to possible friends. Most items on the street, depending on how long they have been there gather a group a friends, aka: bugs.

From where I’m from, we do not see this amount of discarded items on the street. Now living in San Francisco, It fascinated and saddened me, and a hole mix of feelings in between. But what got to me the most is the idea that these items had a whole different life behind them, I feel that some were at least loved at one point or another. In my head I thought them to be homelessness, and in that same way people, the forgotten, overlooked, in a city that is overgrown.

Gelatinous Zine

I first though of this idea as I was passing by a new zine shop downtown, and I though to myself, why have I never done this before! So I decided to further expand the Towards the Gaps Between The Fingers Manifesto into something that is not just concise but has some sort of visuals that will aid in the concepts talked about. Overall, I cut it short only because It was starting to look more like another book than a zine ( as in less pages) but I had many more scientific/mathematical examples/concepts that I would still like to talk about. The most recent one is the theory that our universe is a hologram that sprung out of a black hole from a fourth dimensional universe. I know this sound more preposterous than any old scripture about walking on water and curing the blind. But the reason why I dare to speak on this matter is because there is the math to prove it; science is saying this preposterous statement. Yet at the same time this sound all to familiar to Toltec mythology about the universe being a world of smokey mirrors, where what you see is not the ultimate reality.

The title is in reference to a way of something ephemeral; describing god. Since anything that we can come up as humans to how it looks, is limited by our human condition.

Book of Work

For the book of work I created a single sided book containing work from conceptual strategies, photography 3, and photography 4. So far I’m not sure how  the in class projects and the exterior work have in common. They are all involving photography in some form. As for a conceptual basis I don’t see a direct connection. I felt that the double sided nature of the book was a good idea, but given the time frame, it would be just right to produce, the problem was that , some of the work that I included was still in the process of creation. As in the work fro my other classes. My biggest obstacle was time, creativity, inspiration, and the work itself were all there. My main concern at the start was the printing itself and how it renders colors, I adjusted the images for printing and still it did not come out as desired. Which is a good thing that I did not spend too much money on the printing, since I need to spend more time, adjusting the colors, for a perfect print. What did work was the binding, I did it myself and I actually like how it turned out. The square ratio of 7x7 inches is also something I am happy with since I feel that it fives ample spread for photographs in the 2:3 ratio. This leave just enough space for writing, without leaving too much white area as opposed to a traditional 8.5x11 book. Overal I am happy to of learned how to use in design, I feel that it is necessary and great addition.

THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT

Blackout | A virtual glimpse into the lives of strangers

A pioneering virtual reality film transporting you into the memories of strangers on the New York City Subway.

This is collaboration with dancers and hackers created at Kinetech Arts in San Francisco. I really enjoyed this performance because although the voice is humorous it is still controlling people. It reminded me of a book I read as a child, called House of Stairs by William Sleator. In the book children are suddenly taken and put in a giant room of only stairs. In this endless maze, there is only one prominent thing, a machine that gives them food, if they follow the movements that it asks of them. The book is interesting because it bushes the boundaries on where  and how far we are willing to endure to survive, but I also see it as how far will we allow the force of technology to dominate our lives, and could we live without it. In the case of the children in the book, that machine was their only source of food, so it directly affected their lives.

Dance Hack Day (5th event)

I attended the second annual Dance Hacker Day 2015. The event took place off Market street in the downtown area of San Francisco. The building that housed the event was very strange, the entrance on ground level led to stairs both up and down. One way lead to the third floor, where there was a large dance floor with several projectors, and the second lead underground were there was a smaller dance floor surrounded by mirrors. Strangely, the on ground level where the entrance is, if you simply go straight ahead and not take the stairs up or down, you will end up in the kitchen of a Burger King. Its interesting the disconnectedness of building in San Francisco and how there is always space below and above them.

The event consisted of integrating new technology/coding and dance/performance art. Thought the entire day starting at 9am coders and artist gathered to create some new hybrid of technology and art. At 8pm they presented the results of the days work. There were so many different adaptations of these two worlds meeting that I will go one by one along with its image.

The image above is of a dancer that moved in circles, but attached to her waist were sensors that digitized her spinning on the screen above.

The image above is that of a 90′s hip hop dancer that through the use of the Microsoft Kinect ( a motion sensing input device) coders where able to project his movements on the wall. The interesting aspect of this performance is that although this was displayed on a flat surface the Kinect was able to differentiate between depth and showed the overlapping of the arms on the torso as red, creating this color coded dept on screen.

Through the use of light sensors and lights, two artist were able to create these amazing dancing lights.

Similar to the the projection above these artist also use the kinect but decided to play with the limits of the sensor, and would move out of its range and disappear from the screen.

I really did not fully understand this projection above, but I believe they were trying to visualize the internet, or at least visually follow some of its trends.

The image above and below were part of am amazingly simple project. This project was simple because the ideas is quite simple but but works very well. It consists of using a 360 camera and projecting it on the inside of a paper lamp, allowing the 360 surface of the lamp to create the perfect surface to display the 360 image. Technically, I’m not sure how they did it, but I’m glad they showed that this is possible.

Book Cover Ideas 2nd Batch

This is the second batch of sample covers for the Book of Works. I believe that I will use this combination of this sort of mustard yellow and a slightly diluted green. What I have to decide on now is the placement of my logo; I am using the logo instead of my name. On this batch I distorted the logo a bit as opposed to the first batch of covers where the logo has clean lines. I feel that the logo gives the cover depth, without the use of a particular image, or arbitrary design or illustration.

Work from other classes

These images are from a scanned image project. It consisted of editing the color of one image, and creatively adjusting the other. So I decided to add some more dogs. This is from one of my photography class this semester.

Musee Mecanique (4th event)

A place like Musee Mecanique is a surprise, not just because of what you can encounter inside, but because you would of though such a place no longer existed. The museum feels like you are entering a different time, a time of different forms of entertainment, but since they are also items that are very old, its interesting to see how things were previously built. It is as if they were built to last, surprising in an age where a couple of hundred dollar technology is only meant to last a few years.

Although the Museum also holds some relatively more modern arcade games in the back, the main attraction is the mechanical animated entertainment. They had strength test machines, fortune tellers, music boxes, mechanical car driving, and puppets that created small play like scenarios. Many were very strange, like the “opium Den” the you can see below, or the giant animatronic lady that just stairs at you with this blank look.

What I found the most surprising about the overall experience is how entertained felt by some of the machines. I would of though that their charm would of faded by now, but its quite the opposite, it was more refreshing to see than most typical modern forms of entertainment. Perhaps its just me, but I really like to look at the design and try and figure out how it works.

Bellow is a very interesting piece of history, its a hand cranked zootropo. These were used to create a moving image, by slightly changing the picture ahead or before them and displaying it very fast. I have never see one like this, the clip shown is that of a car race scene.

Augmented Body Project

Augmented Body Project Afterthoughts

After completing the augmented body project I felt a bit discontent with the final product.  The organic “sun protective suite” envisioned looks more like a cross between a peacock and a Cesar salad. When sketching out the suite I envisioned more bare wood branches, and in the end I believe that looks best. The issue is that if this suit is to protect you from extreme UV and heat exposure, it would need to cover the body or at least provide ample shading. In the end I felt that in order for the suite to seem usable ( not exactly practical) it would require more covering, and this is the result.

Ratio 3 Gallery (3rd event)

I attended the Barry McGee exhibit at the Ratio 3 gallery. Up to this point I did not realize that there was a gallery there, it sits between some smaller shops in the Mission District near the 24th street Bart. I really like Barry McGee since I saw one of his heads on a Cinelli bike seat. That’s possibly one of the biggest attraction to him, his accessibility. This might also have to do with his previous street art work. No one denies his work as fine art, showing in many galleries around the globe, but at the same time it holds an approachable demeanor. I do feel that he might have some OCD like tenancies well, with the patterns he creates.

I like how he uses patterns, in several mediums. In the image above in the T.V. (although not visible) are faces made out of text. He is also using text and patterns and pooling them together, it sort of reminds me of a giant art cloud.

Towards the back of the gallery and through a small opening that requires people to duck down there are two more rooms with artwork. It sort of becomes another show, without any notice. There are still fragments of McGee’s work but there are also other artist involved. You can see some of the other work below.

Camera Obscura Visit (2nd Event)

I visited the Camera Obscura installation near Cliff House in San Francisco, California. I tried to to go during sunset, but unfortunately it closes at 5pm and sunsets are starting around 6pm. But as instructed I did visit with a companion, which I think did add immensely to the overall visit. After talking about the image itself we shared this song, that I thought would make a good soundtrack to the crashing waves.

The room is dark with a concave disc in the middle that show the images picked up by the opening above. The periscope type of mechanism above rotates 180 degrees to give the view of the shoreline, oddly it gives the illusion that the disk on which the image is projected on is itself moving.There were also holograms along the walls in many different sizes.

The images I posted really don’t do the actual visit justice. The camera obscura “image disc” is more like a living painting, because the image has great depth, clarity and a certain specular highlight on the glistening waves that is absolutely astonishing.

I am fascinated with the technology used to created, and the little details you would regularly not think of. The person at the Camera Obscura noted that the plane on which the image is projected had to be concave in order for it to be in focus throughout the image, which is amazing to think of.

Manifesto Project

Towards The Gaps Between The Fingers

The first thing that enters my mind now that this project is finished is that I probably should of chosen something comical, or just something easier to explain. But in the end I decided to go forth with this topic because its something that I am truly interested in. The design was easier than the writing portion to start, but I met with several alterations in order to make it look right, at least in my mind. As for the righting, it took several drafts to come up with this final one, and still I question if my point is coming across. I tried to keep it more general withing the train of thought, but there are some examples of the implications. I am not sure its efficiently possible to convey this point of the gaps in our senses without first explaining why its important and how it manifests through life. But in the process of creating this background I’m not sure if I loose the reader. Also I felt that It came off too strong of a point of view, although I believe that that is the point of a manifesto. Still I don't like the feeling of writing that seems like it is screaming at you, and I think that for some, this could be the case. I decided to place the manifesto in the Schools library because that I see it as place for deep thought, and that I know you are there to think, so I don't feel like I’m cornering people to read this very long piece. The other location I choose is the Science building because I feel that their views are probably the most opposite tho the one in that train of thought. Not to cause a fuss but to make people think.

I try to keep my philosophies to away from strangers, because I don't want to intrude on their philosophies, but this was a great way to interject, but still giving them the choice to stop reading at any time. I do have these conversations with a few friend, and so its also good to expand that circle in a sense, and I hope to hear feedback.
