Things I learned in Norway
I stayed in Norway just couple of days, but I observed, read and heard a lot.
I love that every country is different, every country has its own culture (despite obvious multiculturalism, which you cannot miss in Oslo). I have great friends that showed me the best of Oslo, and I had chance to discover much more than just tourist places in the city.
1. Janteloven (Law of Jante) is a law that all Norwegians are taught from very early childhood and it describes perfectly the way they live, how they put society ahead of an individual. It describes set of behaviors that they should preserve, such as not to think that you are better than anyone else. To some extend this “ideology” of Norway may seems pretty socialist, however, I think we can get inspired. I´m sure that it´s also thanks to Janteloven that Norwegian society is ahead of many others. On one hand they are very reserved people, on the other hand they care about something bigger than just themselves.
2. Appreciate nature - I love how Norwegians know how to appreciate nature and the good weather. As it was many times said - there is no bad weather just bad clothes. And that´s totally true, you can see people jogging in Oslo in any kind of weather, when it rains some people don´t even bother with an umbrella. When the sun is out you can see all the people turning their faces with a little smile into the sun. When the weather is nice there is no chance of wasting a day inside. Everybody goes out, hiking, cross-country skiing, or jogging, having picnic...
3.Matpakke is a typical Norwegian packed lunch, that kids take to school with themselves and adults bring it to work as well. Typically it´s a sandwich packed in a paper, there are special ways of packing it. I heard they are pretty fussy about their matpakke. I really liked the idea of bringing little bit of your own food wherever you go, although there are many nice places to eat wherever you go, I think it has a special feeling to have something home-made prepared by yourself and people should do it more often ;-).
