New Year Altar

With the coming of the New Year putting an end to the chapter that was 2018, I set up an altar in preparation of what I would like to come of 2019 and what I fear may come.

With the help of my friend, we set to work combining our affinities- Candles and Crystals to create what became one of our best joint casts.

Set Up:

On a raised holder at the center was a white pillar candle for Balance, Clarity, and to help send off our wishes into the Cosmos.

Surrounding the pillar candles were four spell candles. Green to the north, yellow to the east, red to the south, blue to the west. Between the pillar candle and the spell candles were four palm stones. Blue calcite to the north, quartz to the east, rose quartz to the south, and selenite to the west.

Between each candle were quartz clusters/points to assist the white candle in sending off the energy necessary.

Behind the clear quartz included carnelian, ocean jasper, Smokey Quartz, and jasper and amazonite behind each of those. Behind the four spell candles were amethyst and behind the amethyst included clear and rose quartz, sodalite, and rainbow fluorite and behind each of those larimar and to complete the altar four black tea lights were placed in the four corners of the cloth.

Candle Intentions:

As said above, the white candle was our focal point to send off our wishes.

We used the white candle as a symbol of balance, peace, clarity, and as a metaphor for the new year. White- a clean canvas- a new story to be written and new experiences to be had. It symbolizes what awaits us in 2019.

The green candle represents grounding and prosperity. Keep our heads on no matter what the universe, the spirits, or the goddesses and gods throw at us (or whatever your belief is!)

The yellow candle represents joy and creativity. Both my friend and I have a- er- clusterfuck of mental illnesses and want to kick off the new year in a good place. I didn’t create as much in 2018 as I would have liked and therefore wanted a little added inspiration and reminder that I have time, and I need to make something with it.

The red candle represented passion and courage for us. Being anxious Souls it’s difficult for us to confront problems head on at times. We also both wanted the year to be filled with love and a little extra passion from our significant others. (We consulted them about the candle choice and they agreed! Which was great,)

The blue candle was for wisedom and peace of mind. We both learned a lot over the course of the past year and can only hope to continue learning. The blue candle was a message to our guides that we’re listening and when they think we’re ready- we’ll be open to receiving new insights and advancements to our spirituality. Also, to calm our anxious minds. We honestly just wish to be normal sometimes,

The black candles were to protect the intentions of our spell from any negative intentions of those around us (mainly the cat. He was a little upset about the lack of wet food at dinner time)

Crystal Intentions:

Amazonite: was added to clear the stresses of the prior year (which ended on a stressful note for sure) and ward off or ease the stresses that would with the new year

Amethyst: to ward off future negative influences and alleviate the ones that afflicted us

Calcite, Blue: to alleviate anxiety and help increase psychic senses

Carnelian: to promote courage, love, motivation, and endurance of the mind and body. Or as my friend put it, “that good sex”.

Fluorite, Rainbow: to help with grounding and promoting positive spiritual energies

Jasper, Green: for healing- mainly emotional, we’re wrecks ok

Jasper, Ocean: for joy. “That good dopamine.”

Larimar: we agreed on using larimar for peaceful communication with both the physical and metaphysical aspects of life.

Selenite: connecting, purity, cleansing and because I’m a bit of a hoe for selenite- but it worked quite well in our spread

Sodalite: for truth and to alleviate our exhaustion mostly. I’m not a fan of lying, and we’ve had a bit of an issue with it as of late

Quartz, Clear: We had an abundance of clear quartz on our altar, four clustery looking ones, one wand/point, and a palm stone. We used them as magnifiers for the spell to draw in our intentions and then channel them back into the universe.

Quartz, Rose: this crystal was added to increase self-love, familial love, and romantic love.

Quartz, Smokey: protection from whatever the world may throw at us this year

Misc:

We cleansed the altar with sage first and lit the candles in the order of:

White, NE tealight, SE tealight, SW tealight, NW tealight, Green, yellow, red, and blue then put them out in the reverse order. We each lit half the candles and snuffed/blew out the opposite of the ones we lit.

We snuffed the white candle together but blew out the rest of them as to “blow the intention” into the white candle. We let the altar sit over night after the candles burned about a quarter of the way (it felt right).

And that was our altar.

🌲 How to celebrate YULE  🌲

I thought to create a post about how to celebrate yule and also what you can do now that yule is approching! 

Make little wreaths out of juniper, pine, or cedar!

You can make your own christmas ornaments with oranges and apples and cinnamon sticks (along with cloves too, here’s a good tutorial on it! just click here)

Make a wishing cone! While I couldn’t find too much info on it, I believe you put wishes into the cone (you can add some herbs to enhance it) and then you light it or put it in a fire. However you could also just light a candle and put your wish upon paper and burn it. Cast it out into water and pour the water/ashes outside.

Make a witches ball for yule! And for for the coming new year so good things come!

Storytelling Through Tarot

I’ve noticed that a lot of other witches also enjoy fiction and writing! Tarot itself tells a story, and you can do so much with using tarot to outline your story and characters! So here’s a 13 card spread that can be shortened down to six if you need to. The order in which you lay them really depends on if you’d rather do a six or thirteen card spread. 

1-6 are the main points of the story. 

Beginning - What are things like at the beginning of the narrative? Where do your characters start?

Climax of Act One - Something has drastically changed in your MC’s life. What is it? What do they need to do now?

Midpoint: big twist! - Need a plot twist? Someone is hiding a secret? Things aren’t going as planned? This is where something unexpected happens.

Climax of Act Two - It looks like the bad guy is winning, nothing is going right. What does the most intense part of your story look like?

Wrap up - What loose ends need tied up?

End - Where are things now at the end of the story?

Now, the other cards go in between those main six points. 

Beginning

Inciting Incident - What happens that shakes up the status quo?

Second Thoughts - What’s your character thinking now with these events looming on the horizon?

Climax of Act One

Obstacle - No one said this journey was easy

Obstacle - Yup, more things to keep your hero from meeting their goal

Midpoint

Obstacle - Getting frustrated? Good.

Disaster - The “oh shit” moment

Crisis - The “no no no no no this isn’t happening” moment

How To Find Your Spirit Guides, And Guardian Angels

Your spirit guides, and guardian angels are very powerful entities that have been watching over you, and are ever present in your life even, if you do not have a relationship with them yet. These beings are specifically connected to you, because you chose each other before you were even born into this incarnation. Everyone has a spirit guide, and a guardian angel. Finding them, and learning how to interact, and communicate with them can greatly improve every single facet of your life through the simple act of their presence. Some people may find it hard to find their spirit guides, and guardian angels, others will find it very easy, it all depends on if you are ready to know them, or not. There are many ways to go about finding your spirit guides, and guardian angels, if you are ready to go searching for them. Any of these methods am about to share with you can help you find them, but it is also important to use your insight, and introspection to verify your experiences.

Things that can help you find your spirit guides, and guardian angels:

• Just knowing that they exist.

Just to the act of simply acknowledging that they exist will allow you to start building a connection with them. You will start to see their influences in the world, and all of the things that they do for you, that you might not have been previously aware of. Allowing for you to meet them, and to get to know them not through a direct meeting, but through there actions in your life.

• Asking them to appear, and to be ever-present.

This will show them that you are ready to have them in your life. Just like the previous method, it will open you up to experience what they do in your life already. After you ask them to be more present in your life, you should look out for signs of them acting in your life.

• Meditation.

Through the act of meditation one can find their spirit guides, and guardian angels by using their spiritual senses to perceive them. To do this all you will really need to do it enter a meditative state, open your third eye, and call to them. They should come to you, and show you their presence, and once they do you guys can begin your communication, and learning of each other. This meeting is most likely going to happen in your sacred space, or astral temple, and is going to rely heavily on your sixth sense’s ability to pick up spiritual constructs.

• Divination.

Divination can be a very useful tool when trying to communicate with anything so why not your Spirit guides, and guardian angels. All you need to do is get some form of divination method of your choice, and ask your spirit guides, and guardian angels to answer through it. Then simply begin asking questions to it as normal, and they will answer through the act of your divination tools. This will allow you to communicate with them, and get to know them better. This is a very good method, especially when you can not get into a meditative state, or when you do not have a complete grasp of using your sixth sense abilities.

• Dream.

If you know how to lucid dream, you can always call out for them in your dreams and they will appear to you there.  If you cannot lucid dream, you can always ask your spirit guides, and guardian angels to appear to you in your dreams before you go to bed, and they may come to you and your dreams. That’s all there really is to it.

• Astral projection.

Astral projection can be quite helpful, when trying to communicate with any entity this also includes your spirit guides, and guardian angels. all you have to do is astral projecting and you will be able to find your Spirit guides and guardian angels on the astral plane and communicate with them.

• And much more, that I’m probably forgetting, while writing this.

Be wary of witches who speak as though their ideas are absolute.

I see a lot of posts in the witchblr community telling the “truth” about witchcraft with an air of authority. They come from a lot of really popular witchblrs so they also spread fast.

Here’s the deal though: personal beliefs are just that. Witchcraft is difficult, if not impossible to prove, just like the basis of any spiritual or religious belief.

Don’t trust people who don’t acknowledge the possibility that they could be wrong, or that their ideas are just opinions.

Everyone practices differently, so one person’s truth cannot apply to everyone. Don’t force yourself to fit in another person’s definition of a “real” witch. For all we know, we’re all wrong.

Embrace it.

I know this may seem obvious, but please do your own research when it comes to spirituality.

I’ve seen so many newbies be given misinformation by “experts” and “gurus” who have their own agendas. The ego is a powerful thing and some of these people are making things up as they go along. Telling you to ignore initiatory rites and other rules and regulations of a spiritual system are HUGE red flags. If something seems off, ask them where they got their info from. If they refuse to give one or site themselves as their only source, they are not fit to be your spiritual teacher. 

Remember that spiritual work isn’t regulated the way that other job fields are. That doesn’t mean that what we do isn’t work. It just means that many people can call themselves spirit workers who aren’t exactly qualified to do so. I understand that not everyone will practice in identical ways, but some of the things I’ve seen being told to newbies is so concerning and flat out disrespectful to the systems they are claiming to teach. 

Your spiritual life is nothing to gamble with. Be careful out here, y’all.

As promised, and requested, a bottle sealing post!

A important reminder first– be careful when you’re using candles, don’t set your shit on fire. You can use any candle for this, I use different candles (colors and scents) depending on what I associate with the bottle I’m making (yellow & lemon for happiness, blue for sleep, etc.) you don’t have to do this, but you can. You can also use regular candles instead on tea lights, but tea lights usually melt faster for me.

Also, I don’t know (or actually care?) if this is the proper way to seal a bottle with wax, witchcraft doesn’t need to be fancy, and my personal craft is focused on using what I already have, and going out to purchase “special” items as little as possible, nothing wrong if you do, but I am a very small budget witch, and I like the challenge that comes with it. I happen to be a bit candle crazy, so this works well for me.

Okay, so here we go!

Set down a piece of paper if you don’t want to get wax on your stuff, light that little tea candle (or regular candle) and let it start to melt. I usually light my candle before I start putting together my bottle, so it is usually close to ready by the time I’m done.

Once the tea light is melted all the way (or big candle, deep enough to dip) I dip the top in! If you are using a bigger bottle than I am, you can remove the wick usually with a pair of tweezers, but I don’t like to do this because I never use all the wax, so it’s a waste if I take out the wick!

Pull it out, you can blow on it to help it cool faster, dip it again, out, blow on it, a few times until it’s pretty covered and the top is pretty solidly covered (pictured is after the first dip! But you can see how covered it was when I start pouring wax in the next photo)

If you want the drippy-witchy-wax look, (carefully) pick up your candle and pour wax over the bottle top (see why we put that paper down, now?) I usually smooth out the top with my thumb, gently while it’s cooling down. Once cooled down the wax on the paper usually comes right up, and I usually stick it back in the candle to melt down for later. 

Usually I stick mine in the fridge to cool down and harden (my house is warm bc we don’t control the heat) 

And ta-da! Your bottle is sealed up. Also, I think you could probably carve a sigil in the top if you’re into sigils (I don’t personally use them, but I imagine you could!) 

There we go, it’s super easy, no one taught me how, I just sat down and was like “OKAY, so how am I going to seal this without covering the whole damn bottle in wax????” and this is what I came up with! If you don’t want whatever is in your jar to move around (I usually pack mine pretty tight, so it’s okay) I would just pour the wax on top, it will be messier though.

Sabbat Altar and Celebration Ideas for the Solitary Witch

YULE Altar ideas: Put mistletoe and pine on your altar; put a candle up there to represent the Sun; keep your Yule log on your altar; use symbols of the Sun; decorate with red, green, white, blue, and yellow (red and green for holly, white and blue for snow and wintery colors, yellow for the Sun). Celebration ideas: Kiss a consenting person under the mistletoe for luck; give gifts; have a feast; make magickal wreaths with herbs corresponding to the spell intent (you might use lilac, lavender, and camomile for a wreath that brings peace into your home).

IMBOLC Altar ideas: Use candles to represent the return of spring; make a cute little corn dolly; put a Brigid’s cross on there to honor her; decorate with yellow and green to represent the Sun and return of spring. Celebration ideas: Clean your house; have a self-dedication ritual (to a particular path, deity, philosophy, standard of life, etc.); clean off your working altar and redo it; cleanse and charge any tools or crystals you need to.

OSTARA Altar ideas: Use fake eggs, rabbits, and other symbols of fertility or spring; put some potted plants on the altar; place some packets of seeds you might be planning on growing; decorate with purple, yellow, green, white, and other spring, pastel colors. Celebration ideas: Paint and blow eggs (take proper precautions when handling raw eggs, obviously, especially if you’re putting your mouth on them); if you have a greenhouse, want a potted plant, or it’s warm enough where you live to plant outside, plant some seeds; buy a potted plant; organize your herb shelf.

BELTAINE Altar ideas: Make a mini Maypole for your centerpiece; smack some candles up in there, especially beeswax, if that’s in your budget; put some faery symbols, like little statues or bells or something like that; a jar of honey or some beeswax is always dope; if you’re comfortable with it, some people like to put representations of genatalia on their altar. Celebration ideas: Light an awesome bonfire (also be very cautious with this because fire can quickly turn dangerous); leave offerings to the faeries; have a dance outside; this is a good time to plan to have a handfasting ceremony or wedding; cast any love workings you’ve been meaning to do; if you’re an adult and have a person/people who consent to it, you could choose to have sex during this time (but do be safe!); many people try to conceive children during Beltaine.

LITHA Altar ideas: Symbols of the Sun and the Moon, feminine and masculine symbols if that’s a thing in your tradition; decorate with black and white to symbolize the night and day. Celebration ideas: Get up before the Sun rises and go to sleep after it sets, so you can experience the day and night; have a bonfire (again, safety is important); have a picnic; just spend a lot of time outside.

LUGHNASADH Altar ideas: Put bread and grain on the altar; maybe some apples and other autumn fruits; pinecones and leaves are fall symbols; decorate with red, orange, yellow, brown, and other colors of the season. Celebration ideas: Bake (especially make the cute little bread men); give an offering to the Earth; go to an apple orchard and pick some apples; share a feast with the family or your friends.

MABON Altar ideas: Wine, or grape juice if alcohol is unavailable for any reason; leaves and pinecones; apples; a money jar (see first celebration suggestion below). Celebration ideas: For a week or two before Mabon, put money you can afford to give up in a jar, and donate it to charity or a cause you support on Mabon; have another apple harvest; have another feast; do a ritual to honor the Earth.

SAMHAIN Altar ideas: Pop a few gourds in there, more apples if you want; pictures of the deceased; tools for divination and spirit contact; decorate with black, white, and orange. Celebration ideas: Divination, spirit communication (obviously only if you know what you’re doing); hold a seance or a dumb supper if that’s more comfortable for you; light a candle in the window for spirits (use a fake one if you want it lit all night); leave some milk and honey for the Fair Folk; give offerings to the dead; put up wards and shields if you’re one of the people who would prefer to avoid spirit activity.
