After however many, many months it's been, the one whole lemon I've been waiting on to "turn into a lemon" finally went all the way yellow and so I decided I had to do something special with it.

Took the basic Norwegian Christmas Butter Squares recipe and fucked it up customized it with salted butter, lemon sugar (lemon zest + sugar kept in a jar and shaken once in a while for a couple of days beforehand) and reduced the lemon juice down with a little sugar to make a syrup to drizzle over the top after the baked "squares" were removed from the oven.

...Yeah, turns out we didn't have the 9 x 13 pan anymore, I very quickly made do with an already cold sheet pan. The dough didn't spread nearly as much as I expected, and the edges aren't actually as crisp as they look. The whole thing turned into a soft lemon shortbread, which. YES. Will have to try it, uh. As written. Sometime. Maybe. ...These are going to be gone very soon.

It's been a minor forever since I bought myself a book, and many minor forevers since I first encountered this specific edition of a very formative work that I have thought about every so often since I was very young. I distinctly remember having to choose between two hardcover books because I only had money for one, and alas this one wound up back on the shelf. If any of you have never read through Where the Sidewalk Ends, consider this a very loud recommendation. It's silly and irreverent and deep af and some of the poems hit you unexpectedly in the chest. Also while I was flipping through it before I started reading again, I landed on this first, which. Well.

As for the book that I bought in the bookstore that day instead, no regrets.

Of course I still have it.
