the end of an era

As the title suggests, this will probably be the last post on this blog. As the group has closed its doors, there’s really no point in maintaining this anymore. Of course if old group members want to continue just to finish threads or what have you, that’s perfectly fine and I’m down. But otherwise, consider this the Official Retirement (tm).

I did, however, create an indie Shikamaru if anyone’s so inclined to follow it (and you should): @stagknight

Sep. 22 in Japan!! Shikamaru’s birthday!!!!!! He’ll go to work as usual on his birthday - and when he leaves in the morning Temari says “Try to get home early today!” Then, he turns his head and shows this subtle smile… Sweeeeeeet!!!!

“Mmm, it’s like an ocean.. or a body of water.” Hinata absently adds in a hushed tone. Her pale eyes scanning the way the room’s light and shadow play over the solid color. “I think, anyway..” cheeks warm with her having said all of this out loud.

He was hard to miss in this type of environment. Nara-san being here of all places perked her interest. Not expecting to see any familiar faces besides Sai-san, not that she’s seen him in this city anyway. – No matter. This would be the heiress’s fourth visit. Not to mention the few times she skipped roaming inside, favoring the decorated exterior with all those large old trees and hanging lanterns. It was a good place to sit and study or read with a hot cup of something sweet.

“Does Nara-san have a favorite piece?” A small lift of her heels while bowing forward to try and see the texture of the paint up close.

“Huh? Oh... I guess so,” Shikamaru replied. To him, the piece just looked like a rush job by a lazy artist (took one to know one, after all). But seeing it from Hinata’s perspective, his eyes following the ebb and flow of each river of colour cutting across the canvas... he could kind of get it. 

A favourite? “Uh...” He had to think back on which works stood out the most. Most weren’t anything to write home about--standard art gallery fare--but there had been at least one or two that made him stop, just for a moment.

“There were a couple of paintings by this one guy, on the second floor near the courtyard. Everything looked like it was glowing,” Shikamaru answered at last. It was a nondescript answer, he knew, but it wouldn’t be impossible to show her exactly what he meant.

“How about you?” he countered, watching as she tilted forward. Her focus was so intense he swore he could almost make out the veins around her eyes. “You look like you’re an expert on these things.”

Kisame tried to apply the same logic to his former comrades. If art were linked to psychology, perhaps a few things could be explained. Deidara was an erratic, impulse-serving braggart, where Sasori was calm, methodical and goal-orientated. The evaluation twisted to humor though and Kisame snorted a laugh. They were of a similar mindset here.

“You’d be correct in your assumption,” he confirmed. “Unfortunately, there aren’t many things for my type to do in this city for fun. Nothing legal, at least.” He’d accepted that people would know him from their previous life, even if he didn’t necessarily know them. His appearance would at least be spoken of– he wasn’t the most inconspicuous of men.

Looking around at the other colorful freaks, he peered down at the young man. “What about you? Clearly this isn’t your scene, or you’d be fawning over the– what was it again? Psychology of the art?”

At least the guy was honest. He could appreciate that much. He also couldn’t bite back in way of morals; after all, Shikamaru tended to bend the rules every so often himself. Just not at the frequency or extremity of a former convict.

Shikamaru emitted his own amused huff. “Yeah. It’s something to do, I guess. I mean, this place--” he gestured vaguely to the city at large, “--has a lot more than Konoha for sure. Everyone needs some quiet time now and again. Figured I wouldn’t get hounded in here,” he said.

And he’d been right, mostly. Except for the offers of either a guided tour or well-worn headphones for the audio tour, both gallery staff and patrons left him alone. It was a far but welcome cry from working day in and out as a government official.

“Anyway, I heard there was some history exhibit going on. Sounded interesting enough,” Shikamaru added.
