Alien, 1979 dir. Ridley Scott 

Ripley. Only if everyone had listened to Ripley. One can only wish to have Ripley’s survival instincts. 

Ripley’s characterization and how she asserted her desires instantly made her inspiring figure for me. 

The cinematography and direction is masterful. Specifically, I’m a fan of the late 70′s, early 80′s sci-fi aesthetic; anything in regard to set design, costume design, special effects, etcetera from that era I believe is perfectly executed.  

I will argue that Alien, specifically was a great influence on David Lynch for Dune (1984).

Three Colours: Blue, 1993 dir. Krzysztof Kieslowski 

This film is a visceral investigation of pain, sadness, loss, and solitude. A sensory experience you must welcome because coping with grief is also the loss of one's senses; sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. And as you grieve, you seek your senses again.

We follow Julie as she loses her senses entirely and discovers them as she grieves. 

Grief is this constant thing and the human condition seems to be forever baffled on the immediate loss of someone's physical presence in your life. But we can love what they leave behind, we can replay the memories, we can adapt to the new environment without them, no matter how hard. 

We can learn to use our senses again, in their totality.

Madeline’s Madeline, 2018 dir. Josephine Decker 

A film which investigates artistry and inspiration and how the lines between idolization and motherhood blur with possession.

It’s quite the disorienting film that transports you directly into it’s world. In my opinion it’s worth the experience.

child soldiers, who fight to survive, fight to outlive the harm inflicted on them. 

there is so much nuance in this film; which requires you to research if you lack prior knowledge of the systems which perpetuate this cruelty. 

Beasts of No Nation, 2015 dir. Cary Fukunaga

Frances knows, when you find someone, you have to be more than willing to take off your socks in bed for them. and it isn’t a second thought, even if it is in fact your bed. This she knows to do instinctively. 

For me, these three frames encompass my takeaway from the film. 

Frances is a protagonist who I admire for never really getting mad at anyone and for never ever really deflating despite her current circumstance. I especially admire her for running out in the street barefoot for her best friend.

one of my favorite films of all-time. this movie is grounded in such profound symbolism. it’s a movie which identifies the future, because it knows our history. I learned so much about film, direction, and storytelling from this movie. from Jordan Peele. he is quite the visionary.

a futuristic masterpiece !

an honest depiction of how the human condition can be to help one another. 

there are people who help others, that need help themselves, and in this movie it’s a beautiful portrayal of mutualism. 

Short Term 12, 2013 dir. Destin Daniel Cretton

a great coming-of-age film. which conveys internal struggle beautifully. what happens when internal feelings, ideas, and the like clash with the external (a family, a crush, or nature) 

there’s freedom when you find yourself.

naïveté does not exist for them. this film is one of my favorite movies. i cannot praise it enough. 

it is a story about overcoming a predator who craves you, while you learn what desire truly is. 

and it’s anything but weakening the object person of your affection as you prey on them. it’s empowering each other. and freeing each other.
