Self Evaluation - Work Experience

For my work experience I shot a wedding ceremony. This is something I had never had any experience with so It took a lot of research and practice. I started by meeting up with the bride and groom to discuss what kind of photos they were looking for and as it was a small wedding with only 6 people there including themselves, there wasn’t a lot they wanted done. They asked for photos of them during the ceremony and some group photos after the ceremony. I started researching the equipment to use and I also visited the location to take some practice shots so I felt more comfortable on the day. I felt like the shoot went very well and I felt comfortable controlling the group shots, which is a big achievement for me as I usually lack confidence in that area. I spent a lot of time researching different ways wedding photographers edit their images and I came up with a way for me to edit mine, that wasn’t as simple and quick as I usually edit. I am glad I spent this time to research editing as I ended up giving better results to the client than I would have done without researching and trying new things. Overall, I really enjoyed the experience even though it was quite stressful as it was my first wedding, but the clients are happy with the photos and I feel more comfortable shooting on location and with strangers which is a big improvement for me.

These are my final photos with Demi Decay.

This was my favourite shoot and im so happy with how these photos turned out. I think Demi is a very talented makeup artist and he was very comfortable using my props. Demi is now going to use these photos and put them onto tshirts for his merchandise store. The most challenging thing with these photos were his skin tone. His facial makeup was a lot darker than his body, and so was his tights, so i had to give him a slight tan in photoshop. I struggled with this at first but after a one to one with jim i now know how to do it. The  easiest way for me to do it was by using the dropper tool to select his skin tone on his face, paint it on his body and select the blending mode as colour. this made it look more natural and less painted on. overall i am very happy with how they turned out.

These are my final photos with Reece Spectrum.

My favourites are the burlesque look. I like his expressions in the jester photos but i feel like of i experimented in photoshop with changing the colours of his outfit then it would have been more joker like. Reese is especially happy with the burlesque costume and is hoping these photos will help him win a competition. I think these photos will make people ask questions as Reece looks very like a real woman in the burlesque photos.

My final photos of Thistle.

My favourite was the red burlesque look and i feel this fitted my theme more. The magician ones would have suited a brighter background but as i was sticking to a black background for all of them i just used black. Thistle and I are happy with these images and he will be using them for promoting his shows.

Editting Process

once i have narrowed my photos down to the top 20 by using contact sheets, i start editing. First, i alter some of my images using camera RAW to adjust the exposure slightly and often the blacks and whites. I then take the image into photoshop and start with the skin retouching, using tools such as the spot healing tool and the patch tool. I then love on to tidying up the image by getting tid of stray hairs or problems in the clothing. I also edit out any marks that are on the backdrop. After i make sure the image is looking the way i want it, i use the blur filter to soften the skin if the model has rough skin. For Demi Decay’s photos i also editied out a lot of his body hair and for Thistles photos i had to brighten up his hat as it was blending into the background too much.

Risk Assesment

As my shoots aren’t on location I do not need to go and carry out risk assessments, however in the studio I am aware of risks caused by electrical equipment, tripping hazards and hazards caused by other people using the studio. I will take the necessary precautions to keep the area safe by working in a non-cluttered environment and keep wires tidy. I will also make sure to turn the lights off occasionally so that they don’t overheat.
