☕️ ~ planning to finish the night with a short swedish lesson for fun <3
thing that pisses me off most about adhd advice from neurotypicals... the 'doing something for 30 days forms a habit.' bitch nothing in my life is a habit i would be ripping bong and jacking off all day if it was a matter of choice. never underestimate my ability to be super invested in something for like 2 weeks and then forget to do it one day and never go back to it
a hallmark 2009 study on habit creation found that habits developed in a range of 18 to 254 days; participants reported taking an average of about 66 days to reliably incorporate one of three new daily activities—eating a piece of fruit with lunch, drinking a bottle of water with lunch or running for 15 minutes before dinner (x)
and the article also lists some practical advice for what makes forming new habits easier:
make it specific (e.g. "go for a 20 mins run three times per week" instead of exercise more)
have accountability (an app, a tracker or a friend)
make it something you want to do rather than you believe you should do (if you want to exercise more but hate running try to find a form of exercise that you enjoy e.g. dance workouts)
reward yourself during the habit not after (e.g. you get to listen to your current favourite podcast while on a run)
pair it with a cue (aka habit stacking - e.g. if you have a regular appointment once a week (work, school, therapy) always go for your run straight after
remove physical barriers (or add them) (e.g. keep your running gear visible by the door)
it's normal to miss a day or two!!! don't feel like that means you're a failure!!!
reevaluate your habit/goal of you feel like you're failing. maybe it's too challenging? make it easier until you can do it and then you can always make it more difficult again later (e.g. you can't manage three times 20 mins runs, try only one time per week for 20 mins. still too much? try putting on running shoes to walk around the block once a week and REWARD yourself DURING it)
make it novel/fun: wear a super mario hat and play super mario music to clean. pretend you're on the starship enterprise and you want to impress worf with your fitness improvements (that's not from the article that's from adhders)
I am seriously considering passing away to deal with my problems.
