Summary: Now that Steve has realised his mistake, he still needs a push to finally decide that he needs to come back.

You had weaved your way around his heart. He never knew when and how but he knew now, now that you weren’t here. He realised the difference between what could have been and what had been. Now that he had abandoned you, he realised his mistake!
Damn! She wasn’t you! That was it!
The realisation hit him like a freight train. It had happened when Howard had insisted on turning on the marvellous device that could do so many things.
Peggy had insisted and had taken him to meet Howard in the secret office. She was talking passionately about the extension of S.S.R. into a new organisation and how she along with Howard Stark and Colonel Phillips were gonna ‘lead the way’. He knew it already, S.H.I.E.L.D. was being formed.
All these moments, which were new for Peggy, but for Steve, they somehow felt stale. All these feelings which he saw Peggy going through, he had already felt those and with much greater intensity with you.
“Wow! A hand held device which has a laser projection. It senses motion. It can send written messages and make a phone call. It stores information and cannot be opened without the person who it belongs to.” Howard asked Steve with an incredulous expression.
“It also has a camera to take pictures and connects to the internet.” Steve added.
“It has a camera as well! Takes pictures, transmits data and connects to what!” Howard stood up at this point, a dumbstruck expression on his face, looking at Steve.
“You have got to show it to me!” he said. Excitement, clear in his eyes.
“Okay. But it’s of no use now. The device is dead; the battery ran out a couple months ago.” Steve told Howard. “And I don’t think so you can switch it on here, now. The technology is way too advanced.”
“Leave the science to me Rogers.” Howard said in a striking imitation of Tony. Steve was stunned for a moment as his mind went back to Tony. He was staring at Howard.
“Hello! Rogers. What are you staring at?” Howard waved his hand in front of Steve.
“Nothing. You just… remind me so much of Tony.” Steve said. Howard just looked at him with confusion.
“Umm… Tony, your son. I’ve worked with him. He uh… he actually made this device for each one of us.” Steve said with admiration.
“I have a son!?” Howard said to no one in particular.
“Yes. You’d be proud of him.” Steve said with a hint of sadness at the thought that Tony was no more. Well he wasn’t born yet.
“You’ve done a lot for this country Howard. Well you still gotta do a lot. I mean you will.” Steve stumbles for words as he confused his past and present again while chatting. Steve corrected his chain of thoughts for the umpteenth time. This was getting exhausting for him. He walks over to his drawer where he has kept it.
“Well, here it is.” Steve pulled out the touch screen mobile from his drawer, ran a hand over its screen absently and held it out towards Howard. He took it and was looking at it with miraculous expression. He examined it for a few minutes and turned to Steve.
“So this seems to be the input” he said having located the charging point on the mobile. “Do you have it?”
“Umm… no. I didn’t use the wire. I used the wireless pad to charge it. Tony had installed many charging points throughout the compound. Didn’t really need a specific charger.” Steve said with a fond smile. Another memory was pulling him. You! He remembered when Tony had given him his mobile for the first time. He had simply stared at it. He thought of the transponder that he remembered Howard had given him.
“The facial recognition is precise; however, voice activation is required as well, for security reasons.” Tony said in a matter of fact way. Steve just looked at Tony, puzzled.
“Look at the device and state your name. That’s how it unlocks.” You explained.
“Oh, right.” He looked at you and smiled.
He looked at the mobile and a smooth voice responded. “Facial scan complete. Voice activation required.”
“Welcome. Steve Rogers.” and just like that the mobile activated.
