I had a feeling you got everything you wanted
You weren't in the first few rows of the ceremony thankfully, you don't even know why you were there in the first place.
But there he was, a tuxedo and those leather shoes that he loved so much. He looked happy. He was happy. On his face was the smile that you can't ever recall seeing on him. 'Oh no these thoughts again,' you thought to yourself. 'Get your shit together, man.'. You should be happy for him. You wanted nothing more than for him to meet the person that he would love for the rest of his life.
At one point you thought it was you, at one point it was you.
You don't even remember what started the fight. Was it a sarcastic remark? Was it a misunderstanding? Was it an unfulfilled promise? It's been so long ago that you don't really remember. All that you can remember was how it ended.
Him on his knees, and you returning the ring.
Or you trying to return the ring until he uttered the words "Keep it. It will always be for you."
And you're not wasting time stuck here like me
You held on to those words like they were salvation. Like it was true.
You worked on yourself. You made sure that the next time you guys meet again, you would be ready to try again. This time it would be better. This time you would do everything right. You imagined it countless of times -- meeting him again-- the two of you would be out in a park or maybe the newest coffee shop that he is obsessed with, and you will fall back into the same routine as if you could just continue from where you left off.
But unfortunately, the world continued to spin and time continued to tick. The next time he contacted you, it was to give you an invitation to his wedding.
He reassured you that he wanted you there, both him and his soon-to-be wife. "You were a big part of my life, and you always will be. "
You're just thinking it's a small thing that happened.
You were brought back when you heard the pastor ask for the rings to be exchanged by the bride and groom. A little girl was running towards them with a box just big enough to fit in her hands.
Unconsciously you gripped the circular pendant hanging off of your neck. Clutching it has always given you the strength that you needed in situations where you had to get a grip of reality, just this time it wasn't doing the trick. Your gripped tightened as the pastor asked if anyone objects to the union. When no one did, they continued and as they said their vows to love each other for eternity, a tear escaped your eye. Good timing, you thought. Everyone else was crying anyways.
You looked away as he kissed his bride, his wife.
As everyone stood up and waited for them to walk back down the aisle you did the same. The thunderous applause reverbed against the halls of the church. A sea of people cheered for the newly wed. You wiped away your tears, and plastered on a smile. You grabbed a handful of the fresh rose petals from the basket in front of you. Your voice lost in the sea of "Congratulations!".
A quiet sob escaped as you threw the petals to the wife and groom.
The world ended when it happened to me.
