What are your thought on Lori and on all the crap people say about her?

i loved lori. she was fierce and kind and strong-willed and so, so real and you cannot convince me that most of the hatred and contempt that’s been directed towards her character from the very first episode – yeah that’s still an ongoing thing – doesn’t stem from misogyny and virtually unchallenged views on women, fictional or otherwise.

“lori cheated on rick”. that’s honestly the most ludicrous thing i’ve ever heard. someone please enlighten me as to how you can cheat on someone you believe to be dead. also, a lot of people seem to think she should have waited longer before jumping into a new relationship, which is… pretty gross and backwards, to be quite honest. you cannot determine how soon is too soon when it comes to someone else’s life.

“lori was selfish”. yeah, real selfish of her to care for the group, cook for them, support them, save beth’s and hershel’s lives… what a self-centered woman.

“lori stirred the pot by putting rick and shane at odds”. lori did not put rick and shane at odds. shane did that himself by not being able to handle rejection like a grown ass man. he could have just walked away and let it go but instead he made all the wrong choices. lori was not at fault for his obsession with her and carl.

“lori was a bad mom”. honestly, what kind of nonsense. lori was so protective of carl and right before she died she told him she needed him to be a good person and always do the right thing. as for the fact that she couldn’t keep track of him 24/7 – have you ever met a 12-year-old?

“lori was a bad wife”. lori and rick’s marriage wasn’t perfect – not even close – and we know it was on the rocks before the outbreak and then again by the end of season 2. but that was a communication (or lack thereof) issue and that was on both of them. neither of them was a bad spouse.

now, i have seen some valid criticism of her character, mostly based around that infamous speech she gave to andrea in “18 miles out”, which, yeah… could have definitely been worded better. personally though, i didn’t see it as her trying to set feminism back to the 50s as much as her reminding andrea that she needed to pull her weight and sitting on top of the rv all day was basically redundant because that job was already taken by dale.

I absolutely cannot stand when people say Beth Greene was an insignificant/disposable character, and supporting it by calling her a “dumb young girl” or the “bland blonde”. There are so many things wrong with these statements so I’ll break down all my issues with them one by one.

One, Beth went through an incredible amount of ON SCREEN growth, if she was as disposable as people say she was they would have given her a similar fate as T-Dog, Oscar, Axel, Jessie, & characters of that nature who were undoubtably part of the show but were easier to kill off because they weren’t explored as much as other characters (no shade to any of them because I do love them all and believe they served an important purpose). Two, there’s absolutely no reason to put down a character just because they aren’t your cup of tea. You don’t have to love a character for them to be important or critical to the show. How you view them personally has nothing to do with their purpose, so just because you think someone is “bland” doesn’t mean they’re insignificant. Three, calling Beth dumb DOES NOT make any logical sense at all. She’s not only skilled, but incredibly smart and an asset to those she surrounds herself with. A character doesn’t need to be the most advanced at killing to be important to a group dynamic. Four, reducing Beth to being a “dumb young girl” is not only sexist – but is actually incorrect. She is a woman and for people to call her a “young girl” is them trying to minimize her because they think her gender and youth are offensive and make her less than. If you think Beth is weak, insignificant, or disposable for those reasons, that says more about you than it does about her.

What will forever piss me off is after “Coda” aired, Emily appeared on The Talking Dead and who was on with her? Robert Kirkman, who never liked her character, and some random actor I can’t even remember because that’s how unimportant they were. No one else. Not even Norman. And it was so terrible to see Emily crying and no one there to really care. Everyone else gets these beautiful send-offs when their character dies, but not her.

And now, on the show, no one ever, ever mentions her. Not even a passing blip. It’s like Beth didn’t exist at all to any of them.

Sometimes, it just makes me want to cry at the unfair treatment both Beth and Emily received on that show. They both deserved better.

the reason why rick didn’t act when negan said he was going to kill carl is because he knew it would be futile. 

rick had already tried begging once before in 7x01 when negan told him to cut carl’s arm off. he was hysterical, he volunteered his own arm, he pleaded, he did everything he could to save his son and it did nothing – only negan had the power to stop what was happening. moreover, negan had wanted to get rick into that emotional state.

he wasn’t going to give that to negan again.

in 7x16, when negan threatens to kill carl and then bash rick’s hands (rick only gives negan permission to do the latter, by the way), rick finds himself in the same position he was in during 7x01. except he’s a different man now: this time he’s not going to bend to negan’s will, and most importantly, this time he knows that whatever he does in that moment cannot save his son.

this means that rick has only two options before him: 

he can sob and plead as carl is killed in front of him

he can swear his revenge on negan as carl is killed in front of him

he’s learned from past experience that the first option wouldn’t do anything to stop negan, and that it would only give negan the satisfaction of breaking rick grimes once more. if negan was going to kill carl, rick couldn’t let that become another moment where he bows down to negan; instead, it was a promise that this act would be avenged, no matter what.

rick grimes loves his children more than anything else in the world.

am i annoyed that we didn’t get a scene of rick and carl reuniting? yes. am i annoyed that we haven’t had much father/son interaction this season? yes. but just because we don’t see hugs and bonding onscreen doesn’t mean that there aren’t a million of those moments going on off-screen.

I was wearing this outfit today to a grocery store when I made a baby smile. I was wearing this outfit today when I threw my head back and laughed, when I sang in the car with my family, when I filled it with yummy food to keep it healthy.

I was wearing this outfit today to a grocery store when I overheard a woman telling her young daughter who was pointing and laughing that I would get what’s coming to me. I was wearing this outfit today when a woman told a man that it was the wrong kind of attention and that I was asking for someone to get me. I was wearing this outfit today when the same man stared at my body longingly and then agreed with the woman that I was asking for an attack.

I was not wearing this outfit when I was raped. I was wearing a size XXL hoodie and a pair of my mom’s sweatpants, much to the shock of the friend I told after, who asked what she’d been taught to ask: “What were you wearing?”. I feel so terrible for the little girl whose mother was teaching her at the grocery store that she deserved to be assaulted if she dressed comfortably for the weather, which was climbing above 80 degrees, or for an injury, which called for a brace and a boot that doesn’t allow room for long pants, or for her body, because it’s hers and she can put on it what she damn well pleases. I feel terrible for the man who will look me up and down as though I was a 5 for $20 steak deal he might purchase and will immediately after speak to a presumable stranger about the violent fate I deserved. I feel terrible for the woman with fabulous hair who feels she can express herself but refuses to let me do the same.

Summer is coming up. It’s hot outside. I have an injured ankle, and a tight boot and brace to wear on one leg. I will not dress uncomfortably to protect complete strangers who are so offended by an expanse of skin that they console themselves by predicting my next rape.

Stop perpetuating slut-shaming and thus perpetuating a culture of excused rape. Stop perpetuating slut-shaming and thus perpetuating a culture of insecurity, inherent shame, and body image distortion which can cause an innumerable amount of incredibly dark issues nearly impossible to overcome.

My body is mine, and I love it. It is the house I live in, with which I will someday create a family, with which I run and dance and hold the strong lungs I use to sing. I refuse to be ashamed of it for any reason, especially the reason being that this culture which glorifies sex and punishes those who have it, which encourages being sexy and then preaches that sexy girls ask for attack, has taught its people that my stomach is a sin.

Please think twice this summer before you choose to say anything at all to or about anyone who wears something they choose to wear. Please think twice before you say that a girl deserves to be raped for wearing shorts. Please try and catch yourself when you think things like that. Please be courteous and gentle and loving, and spend your effort tackling real problems. My stomach and legs are not a real problem.
