I just gave up
the only
semblance
of comfort
I had
For it wasnāt truly comfort
at all
- S.V.F. 2024
It threw me at first
Looking into your eyes
Seeing my own reflection
In the dance, and design
Our souls mirrored;
Two flames, same stone
Minds intertwined
Ways new and unknown
Your presence still here
Feeling barely a distance
Your voice all around me
A moment to listen
Your warmth still surrounds me
A hearth from your embers
Still cozied beside me
In comfortable chambers
A touch on my soul
As if you were near
Comforts my heart
As if you were here
I can still feel your lips
And your fingertips trace
As I melt into you
With depth and with grace

What I would do
to be held in your embrace
to be made felt safe
and secure
and nurtured
and adored
And what I would do
for you to let me be
all of those things
for you
in return

Some people dream of winning the lottery. It gives them hope. Gives them a way out. When things get hard, or mundane, they think āwhat would I do if I hit the jackpot?ā. Itās their escapism high. Looking forward to a better life. A brighter future than the life in which they currently reside.
For me though, my thoughts often veer towards āI could just end it allā. Sometimes itāll come on from big, overwhelming news, and others from the most minor inconveniences of daily life. I donāt know when I stopped looking forward. Not sure when my hopes of a better future took a turn. But nothingness sounds lovely, doesnāt it? Because the idea of things ever getting better feels like a far fetched joke these days.
As a child, my grand plans to escape were āsomeday Iāll move to Portlandā. When school was too much, and home didnāt feel safe - I would fantasize about getting in my car, and not stopping til I got there. Hereās the thing though; it took me while, but I did eventually make it to Portland. Iāve been here 10 years now. Things never got better. Well, some things did, but not enough. Brain surgery, spine surgery, chronic illness, trauma recovery, a pandemic, having my heart broken over and over again by life - and people; itās all so fucking hard.
Iāll know itās over when I start selling everything. Iāll put in my notice at my apartment, but never search for a new one. Find a kind, loving home for my dog. She deserves better than someone who can barely peel themself out of bed most days. And then thatāll be that. Iāll write the letters; tell my loved ones just how much I appreciate them, say my goodbyes. And then Iāll be gone. Itāll all be over.
The very last bit always gets me. None of my other executions have worked. To be fair, all of those were on a whim. Very little thorough thought. No letters to anyone. Just immediately wanting to jump through the escape hatch.
I have more patience now. I have the plan above to set in motion. But how will I enact the final act? Itās gruesome business successfully ending it all. Pills have never worked for me. Itās always a bust. Hanging? Jump from a bridge? Guns feel too violent; and I donāt have one anyway. Street drugs feel too out of character for me. I think Iād like to go skydiving, and just never deploy the parachute. Iāve been once. It was one of the most beautiful, thrilling, and terrifying experiences of my life. In an ideal world, I think thatās how I would go. Sounds breathtaking. And quick. And what a stunning view to go out on.
My apologies to whoever has to clean me up though. Iām pretty sure thereās people whose careers are crime scene cleaners. What a job. What a life. I hope their job makes them appreciate their own lives. I hope they still dream of winning the lottery.

I was tricked into loving you
To no oneās fault but my own
- S.V.F. 9/16/23
Would it kill you?
To care.
- S.V.F. 9/12/23
if I let my rage out
I donāt think Iāll be able
to pull it back in
that cage wonāt close
once itās open

I need to stop
making homes
out of people

You could call it lazy
Scribbling words
Instead of speaking them aloud
But I feel they hold more truth
When I jot them down
As opposed to giving them life
In the audio world
When they are written
I can come back
And feel them
Over
And
Over
Again
Hitting me in the eyes,
mind, heart, and soul
Over
And
Over
And
Over
As for when I speak
It is so short lived
Here and gone in an instant
Unsure if it was ever truly there
Itās existence a mirage
A fleeting moment
The empty air
It flatlines
But my mind still races
- S.V.F. 9/11/23
Iāve become a void,
Lingering in the night.
Openly becoming the
Vapors; steaming off the
Earth. Her core releases me, as I
Yearn to be solid, and whole.
Only to be met with complete, and
Utmost understanding.

Is it a strength Or weakness That my heart can fall in love so easily
A curse Or superpower That I can let myself dive into the depths of others
A careful whim A cautious delight
That I can drown in the happiness Our minds and bodies create
But the same can be asked of the reverse
I do not create anchors in others
Always setting my sails in new directions
Which often feel like oceans of the past
Always an island I call my own But no one with me to settle it
Always repeating the patterns of new love
Skimming the shore of others Without ever truly wadding in the deep
How much am I protecting myself, Or them?
How much am I hurting us both?
So I ask again
Is it a strength Or weakness
A curse Or superpower
To so easily fall In and out Of love

Thereās something about you thatās lingering
A trace of your scent is roaming with me
A sense at the first step out of the shower
A stranger walking past in the museum
An idle presence on an airplane
The initial leap into a friends car
Somehow you are still with me
Roaming in the best way
Reminding me I am cared for
And adored
In the presence of a moment
Or the passing of a stranger
You are still there
And itās a lovely reminder
That even though youāre gone
Youāre still here

I carry others with me As a piece of me For better or worse
The way they laughed Their sense of humor The things that brought them joy
They become embedded in my fingertips My brain My heart My spine
But so does their hurt Their fallen grace Their cursed, wounded words
I carry those with me all the same
Their glimmers and triggers
They become absorbed in me
And sometimes I lose myself In the love And hate And expectations of others
It doesnāt always lift me Sometimes it harms me
And I get pulled under the weight of it all
And I lose my own footing
And I am crushed
All because I couldnāt turn off that piece of me
That absorbs everything around me
It can both lift me high above the sky
Or bury me six feet under ground
- S.V.F. 8/17/23
"I am not ok"
It was the title of a short lived television series
Itās also how Iāve felt the vast majority of my existence
Even when I do feel ok; In those moments of relief When loneliness feels tempered Or dread is distracted The sinking feeling in my heart and head momentarily lifted It still comes flooding back The second the distractions are gone
I watch far too much television As a way to cancel out my own thoughts
I waste away in front of my phone So I donāt have to do anything real
Work is a good distraction for my brain But my body can not sustain it And then they both crumble
- S.V.F. 3/16/23
Stuck Stuck Stuck
I canāt get unstuck
Drowning in the mess The weight The burden
My body and mind Broken and fractured
There is no escape
Stuck Stuck Stuck
My body keeps breaking The money wonāt add up The bills arenāt paid The ends wonāt meet
Somehow both too capable And too disabled
Itās an endless cycle
Stuck Stuck Stuck
- S.V.F. 3/5/23
Sometimes I try to force myself
to forget you.
But I don't really
ever want to.
