immediately that visual is so cool in my head
But I wonder if we also ignore illness because of our bias toward agency and control. We would like to imagine that we captain the ships of our lives, that human history is largely the story of human choice. Perhaps this is why rumors have swirled for millennia that Alexander the Great died of poisoning even though he almost certainly died of typhoid or malaria. We simply don’t want a world where even the most powerful emperor can be felled by mere infection.

genuine question — how is donating money going to help Palestinians if no food is going in? What is the money for?
Medicine, water, supplies, food, fuel (much of it black market being upsold at egregious prices) — these all cost money and pretty much all Palestinians in Gaza have no source of income now. It’s drops in the bucket compared to ending the siege and occupation but it’s one way to do at least something small to help. Others are in need of money to evacuate when the border opens again (which hopefully is asap…), tuition and supplies for school to continue studies despite it all. Another fund is focused on trying to rebuild farmlands in Gaza to get food again that way.
I can’t tell anyone what to do with their money but I don’t think this mindset of “well nothings going in so we can’t help” is helpful for people on the ground who are the ones saying that donations can and do help them survive.
The Sameer Project also explained where they're getting food:

[Emergency Water Relief for Gaza City – Help Deliver Life-Saving Water
In Gaza City, clean drinking water is dangerously scarce. Families are struggling to find safe water for drinking, cooking, and basic survival. With infrastructure devastated and water sources contaminated, the need for urgent relief is critical.
We are launching a three-month emergency water distribution project to deliver clean water directly to those most in need. Two water trucks will distribute 10,000 liters per day to communities facing extreme shortages. Our goal is to ensure that families, children, and the elderly have access to safe drinking water during this crisis.
How You Can Help
We have budgeted $50,000 to sustain this project for three months. Each truckload of 5,000 liters costs roughly $300 per truck. That means:
💧 $30 provides 500 liters of clean water
💧 $150 provides 2,500 liters – enough for dozens of families
💧 $300 funds an entire truckload of 5,000 liters
💧 $600 ensures a full day of water distribution (10,000 liters)
Every dollar makes a difference. Your donation will help us reach thousands of people in Gaza City with clean, safe drinking water]
Please donate if you can!!!

This quote is not by the great Persian poet Hafez, who lived in Shiraz, Persia from 1325–1390, it's by Daniel Ladinsky, a contemporary American poet who "translated" Hafez into English and whose books about Hafez are the most popular "versions" in the West nowadays - the problem is just that the poems written by Ladinsky have absolutely nothing to do with actual Hafez poems (which follow very strict form conventions and the difference is obvious to anyone who has seen a real Hafez poem). Ladinsky does not speak Persian and claims his "translations" came to him in dreams, but if you look at his poems, you see that they are essentially original poetry published under Hafez's name and at most loosely inspired. I can really recommend this article about the whole topic
That so many of the poems attributed to Hafez are fake reveals a Western appropriation of Muslim spirituality.
I may never get over this quote from the linked article:
Ladinsky claims that Hafez appeared to him in a dream and handed him the English “translations” he is publishing: “About six months into this work I had an astounding dream in which I saw Hafiz as an Infinite Fountaining Sun (I saw him as God), who sang hundreds of lines of his poetry to me in English, asking me to give that message to ‘my artists and seekers’.” It is not my place to argue with people and their dreams, but I am fairly certain that this is not how translation works.
I'm keeping an eye out for heat stroke in my area and I can't figure out what a full body flush would look like on dark skin since all the pictures are just fake training pictures. Anyone have video/pics of a heat stroke flush on black skin?
Big thanks to @rezmacro for the info!
More info from @tragicmoth on things to look out for in darker skin tones: the other signs including:
• High internal (core) body temperature, typically over 104 degrees Fahrenheit (40 degrees Celsius).
• Behavior changes — like agitation or aggression.
• Blurred vision.
• Confusion.
• Delirium.
• Dizziness.
• Fainting (syncope).
• Fast heart rate (tachycardia).
• Fast, shallow breathing (tachypnea).
• Low blood pressure (hypotension).
• Nausea and vomiting.
• Seizures.
• Slurred speech.
• Skin color changes — either flushed or paler than usual.
• Skin that’s dry and cool to the touch (classic heat stroke) or sweaty (exertional heat stroke).
• Weakness.
Especially keep an eye on your local homeless population since they're most likely to be affected from lack of shelter

last time I'm reblogging this for now unless it gets more to add, but it's important you internalize as many of these as possible. The blind guy outside the corner store may not have visible pupils to look at, that woman on the corner may have a skin condition that makes her skin blotchy to begin with- people are going to show different signs in the moment.
Skin is an easy shorthand if only cause there's so much of it and it's usually visible in this heat, but the more you know, the better.
