As far as I’m aware, Meatyard has managed to remain on the fringes of mainstream success and critical attention. His stuff is very like Francesca Woodman, the more prolific of the two given the brevity of her career (though Meatyard himself died at only 46 I am astounded to discover Woodman committed suicide at the age of 22). I don’t know enough about either of them really but my feeling is that perhaps Woodman’s images, famous as they are, have eclipsed Meatyard’s - I’ve seen hers in at least two blockbuster exhibitions and never have I even heard his mentioned.

This is both a good and bad thing. Bad, because perhaps he didn’t manage to gain the recognition he deserved during his lifetime. Good because it seems entirely in keeping with the quiet, understated mystery of the photographs themselves.
