I apreciate your respond, because I really like your rewrite of Harry Potter. I want to do one my self, but I don't know how or where to start, or even where I can publish it.
Draco Malfoy is one of my favorite characters, mostly because it complexity and his potential to become better.
My headcanon tho is one that is very popular and un popular around the HP fandom and Draco's fans too, because I think he was abused. Let me elavorate:
I don't think Lucius was ever phisically abusive with Draco, even with healing magic you need training, so I don't think he would dare the risk of anyone knowing, and because Narcissa never would allow such a thing. It suit more for him to be emotionally abusive, use psicological games and manipulate his son to do as he please, make Draco crave his atention and do what ever it takes to make his father proud or at least get him to pay atention to him.
I think it was a bad move to not use Lucius more in the story, since he was an important man and had some influence in the school, she could have use him as a threat more since we knew he was one of Voldemort most loyal death eather; he was like his right hand man, he would have done pretty bad things to achieve that.
Emotional abuse is something that keep with you, that make you wonder if your parent love you because is all about manipulation, so is never constant; the abuser treat you well for a day or two, to make you do something they want, and then come back to the usual silence treatment and insulting and critique everything you do they don't see as good.
I think Lucius was like that because I always go that Draco was craving for his father atention, for his aproval, for his love; I can't think of him as a loving father, it never seem that way to me, it never seem he never really cared for Draco until they were in the midle of a war and Draco could really die. Abusers know what they're doing, but they always justify it, even to themselfs, as like they are doing the best for theyr child, that they only doing it because they think it is what would make theyr child be best. It takes extreme situations and confrontation for them to even aknoledge what they were doing was abuse and not just being extrict. Even after the war the only one of the Malfoys who changed was Draco, so I'm not so sure Lucius and Narcissa learned anything about the expirience.
I know Lucius and Narcissa married for love and that Lucius taked Narcissa's thoughts about not wanting Draco far from home, and because of that he didn't go to Durmstrang. To me this doesn't make too much sense, because in rich familys marriage is a political move, and since the wizarding world is like the victorian socity in many things, this could be just one of them. For me it make more sense that Narcissa convenced Lucius with talk about tradition and family, because the Malfoy family was in slytherin for centurys too, so it would look good that Draco go to hogwarts and get sorted into slytherin to keep the Malfoy and Black tradition of being in slytherin, since Draco is also the only Black heir alive (Regulus died, Sirius was in Azkaban and was disowned, Bellatrix was in Azkaban too, and Andromeda was disowned too, so it only leave Draco as heir since he is Narcissa's only son). I'm not saying they were fighting everytime or that they were a bad marriage, but I think they weren't in love.
I'm not saying Narcissa was abusive, I don't think so since she did always show care and love for her son, the counted times she show in the books and movies she seemed to care deeply for him. But since she came from an abusive house hold, I think is pretty acurate she had a similar mind set to Lucius; she wasn't going to permit her son to be phisically abused, but didn't see anything bad about Lucius means to make Draco work harder, "it couldn't be so bad after all" is what parents say when they are asked "why you just watched while my father/mother yelled at me?" because they too have that idea about theyr own childhood.
I see this things in Draco and think it explain his behavior, but he did do bad things, he was a bully and those were his choises alone, but we can't deny the influence the enviroment have in the behavior of people. Draco deserved a chance at redemtion because he showed regret and unwillingness during his service to Voldemort, but I think he deserve that try at redemtion because I think is not in his nature to be that way, that in a diferent enviroment he could be diferent. He isn't good or sweet, he's not soft and he don't have a heart of gold inside, but he can be good if he got the chance after learning that all his parents teached him was bad, was wrong, and that what he did to others was bad too and he has to at least say sorry.
I like the idea of Draco going to the muggle world after the war and getting in the goth scene, because it seems similar to what he knows but it is so diferent; is all about forbidden books, forbidden ways of thinking, is all about the beauty in darkness. I like to think that dark magic is not all bad, that magic is not bad or good, people can use it to do bad or good things; I want him to use darkness for good, I want him to accept his heritage, accept what he did and being ashamed and regretful of that, but explore the other side of darkness; the side full of stars and the moon light, and show that to the world.
I like goth because the clothes and fashion in general is very classy, but that doesn't mean expensive, and that is all about the things the victorian socity was afraid of; freedom, science, arts, music, and death. I think is ideal for Draco to explore the muggle world and get into goth, just imagine him with make up and nail polish, use his back suit some day, but use combat boots, skinny black jeans ripped, and baggy black jakects and leather jakects; or use a combination of both, boots, black pants, black button ups (or dark red and green), with suit jakects, or leather jakects. I imagine him geting piercings and tattoos and going back to Hogwarts for 8th year, and everyone except Pansy, Blaise, Theo and Goyle (they getted closer because of Crabbe's death; but I like to think Pansy, Blaise and Theo were alredy Draco's real friends, because I want slytherin redemtion too) get shocked, Pansy getted in the fashion with him but the other couldn't find the atractive. I can just see the Golden Trio's faces with this.
I like Drarry and Harry to be the bottom, being him all bull (the fics with this are gems) but the idea of him being soft and femenine and a bottom instead of the manly hero everyone expected him to be; like, he is a small bean and a pretty boy, and be all shy and cute, but still get all sassy and angry and being so powerfull he can kill you with just a wave of his hand. Like, Harry was never seen as cute, pretty or handsome like Duddley with the Dursleys, and he wanted to be pretty and have pretty things.
I respect that you don't think like I do, that's why is a headcanon in the first place. I liked your answer, it maked me think. I respect your opinion, and I love your rewrite of the HP series.
