Gennady Kalinovsky | Fagotto Meets Margarita in a Dark Ballroom | From The Master and Margarita Illustrations | x
Master and Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov, Vita Nova, 2001.
A collection of Illustrations from a bizarre French manuscript titled "Danse Macabre" and containing the text from La danse macabre - a mural painted in the Cimetière des Innocents in Paris in 1424. The book is lavishly decorated, with the main, large illuminations portraying a total of thirty men and thirty-six women — all dancing with skeletons.
This is a 17th-century engraving titled Allegory of Death or Death holds a scroll while standing at an open grave, likely created around 1600.
The image features a skeleton holding a banderolle with the Latin text "Vigilate quia nescitis diem nec horam". "Watch, for you do not know the day nor the hour."
