I think it’s ok to primarily enjoy the fanart and surrounding fanon of something.

Lots of media have fandoms that have created entire spin-off universes featuring (some fanon version of) their favourite blorbos, and it’s totally fine to like those much more than the original work that spawned them. The differences in tone and genre between an original work and its fandom afterlife can be stark and jarring, and it somewhat makes sense that people who got into an IP through the fandom stuff might not actually vibe with the original.

This doesn’t give you the right to shit on the original media. Show some gratitude for it existing -you wouldn’t have your favourite fan-made spin-off material without it. Don’t be a hater of the thing that inspired the stuff you love. Try to understand it instead - your own engagement with the fanon stuff you do enjoy will only become richer for it.

the key difference to me really is your respect for the source material. i think a great comparison for very similar fandoms would be TF2 vs Overwatch. both of these are fandoms for team-based fps games with an ensemble of bizarre characters that have many fans who have never touched the game in their life and engage exclusively with transformative work, but the pervasive attitude for the source material is wildly different. TF2 is famous for having no content. Overwatch is at this point famous for how much its own fans despise it.
