BGLO’S

With this post I hope to unveil a book that I stumbled upon for my additional findings. There was a book that I found titled “Black Greek-letter Organizations in the 21th century” which highlights the good deeds done by members of each individual organization. Also this book talks about the struggle of the NPHC to continue the fight for making a better community and creating more equality in every field that human beings engage in. This post is to serve as a statement of propose for our project and what we plan to discover about this topic. We hope to find out if the divine 9 more commonly known as the NPHC can survive under growing pressure to change their methods of gaming membership into each respected organization. Also we hope to look at what these organization do to serve the African American community, do these orgs help serve the needs of fellow black people or does more need to be done by the NPHC to strengthen the black community? During our discovery of the divine 9 we hope to find and highlight the positives of these orgs but also what can be improved on from the outside looking in.

Are the “Divine 9″ that divine?

Statement of Purpose:

My group will examine the role and impact NPHC organizations have had in engaging the campus community and addressing both political and social issues on a large scale. We will begin our research with understanding the history behind these organizations including their founders, missions and values, and learn how these groups have operated and function as platforms for community engagement, social responsibility, and black success when tackling race-related issues at both the local and national levels since their establishment. Our hashtag #wheredayatdoe is meant to inquire about the whereabouts of the NPHC organizations present on our university’s campus as their membership seems to be dwindling and the chapters that are still recognized as active are not very visible or involved in the campus or outside community. Through conversations with members of these organizations on campus in addition to our own research of the organizations’ views and opinions of their own relevance and level of involvement, we hope to encourage our peers to think critically about the role of NPHC organizations on campus and assess how congruent these organizations are with their stated goals and values.

My group decided to use the hashtag #Wheredaatdoe to raise a simple question about where is the presence of the NPHC the campus of George Mason. We felt like this hashtag would bring us the attention we need to get a great discussion started while also moving forward with our project. We do not mean to “throw shade’ or be unfairly harsh about these black Greek organizations. However we do want to raise awareness on what the NPHC is doing or not doing with their status and power for their campus/community to which they belong to. In the end our project and hashtag was created to be a spark to the whole Mason community primarily the Greek life, and hopefully get the NPHC to ask themselves #wheredaatdoe .#AFAM200

Where ya at?

The chosen hashtag for our group’s racial justice project is #WhereDayAtDoe. We intend to facilitate change with this hashtag, by using the hashtag to spark inquiry. When we say “where”, we are referring to the lack of presence of black greek life on Mason’s campus. Where are they? Why don’t they have a strong presence? What are the obstacles to full engagement? Our project aims to inquire, understand, and then act. We’ve created this hashtag to pose the question (primarily) to the Mason student community, in the vernacular that students would commonly speak to each other (black or not). This vernacular is called African American Vernacular English (AAVE), also known in slang terms as “Ebonics”. Phrases like “doe”, “tho”, and “where ya at” are often used among students who are engaged in youth culture. This expounds on our aim to engage with the student community in an easy and accessible way. By employing this language, we are able to connect with them in a way that is natural and familiar, so we can a greater understanding about the lack of involvement.

Our group is set to examine the roles which the NPHC commonly referred to as the Divine Nine plays within the African American community at large, specifically on our campus of George Mason University. During the time we have been on this campus the NPHC has drawn some criticism for the presence they have here at Mason or lack there of with issues directed to social change for the black community and low number of retention for each respected organization. 

We chose to speak about this issue because we hope to speak with people Greek and non-Greek to get a better understanding on the NPHC struggles with unity and stance on social changes. And also does the NPHC organizations only make more divide within our community or serve as a bridge to bring people together?

My group has chosen to examine the role of NPHC organizations at George Mason University in addressing racial justice issues affecting the black community and determine whether or not they truly promote social change. These organizations also referred to as the “Divine Nine” state that their goals include bettering the black community through service and activism however there is a general criticism that these organizations are not living up to their own missions. Furthermore, social relationships and challenges often lead to competition versus cooperation between the organizations, resulting in more divisiveness than black unity. 

The question our group seeks to answer/understand is: in what ways have NPHC organizations had an effective stance on the recent events and issues happening in our community (i.e. race relations, police brutality, political apathy, black scholarship, etc.)?
