I completely disagree with the idea that Brienne is in any way ‘reduced’ for crying and begging Jaime to stay with her. Putting aside the fact that I believe Jaime, in his own emotionally stunted way, was trying to make a clean break so he could go kill his sister without getting Brienne involved – and to make her let him go, he tried to make her hate him, by speaking out loud the things he most hates himself for.

Brienne was incredibly brave in this episode. She has always fought with absolute courage on the battlefield, and her steadfast commitment to honour is its own kind of bravery as well, but those are feats that she understands and the risk of pain or death is something she can face with her head held high. Her real fear has always been the kind of hurt and humiliation that comes with being emotionally vulnerable and then let down. She was traumatized by that ball where for the first time she let herself believe in her own femininity, desirability, sexuality, and longing for a particular kind of love that had always seemed off limits to her – and then had the rug pulled out from under her. She hasn’t been able to trust that kind of validation, or the slimmest hope of it, ever since – yet in this episode, she does. She is the one who says that Jaime sounds jealous, knowing that he could laugh at her for it. She doesn’t hesitate when they kiss. And when she wakes up to find him gone, she doesn’t accept that. She lets herself believe that he cares for her, she goes to find him, and she argues. She lays it all on the line. Jaime and Brienne have expressed love backwards and forwards for years in various coded exchanges of admiration or forgiveness or belief, and Brienne offers him her most blatant ‘I love you’ yet with ‘You’re a good man’. She asks him to stay with her. She cries.

It’s awful because Brienne deserves so much better and seeing her in this kind of pain feels so utterly unfair. But she is not a lesser person because she is upset and she cries over a man. Letting herself cry over a man is probably the hardest thing Brienne has done in this show, and it’s really, really brave. It’s a feat worthy of her title. A woman’s courage.
