fine on the outside * // kotori+suzume
She stands facing the door. The door. The door to her home. Well….her new one that is. Her stomach still flutters uncomfortably with the thought and memories pull her back. Back to Japan, to the small fishing village where she lived most of her life. Back to the faces of her parents, their familiar smiles stretched across their faces. And then back to Tokyo, the faces of friends….of those two boys……filling up her vision and just as quickly, her eyes prickle and start to water. But she’s taking a breath before they have a chance to well up, fighting them away. No, not now. Not again. She’s had enough crying — enough to last a lifetime
And the funny thing is…. it wasn’t until those two came into her life that the tears started flowing. With all the confusion and not to mention heartache that came with them…
Maybe…it isn’t such a bad idea to be here after all. Away from the cause of her muddled, aching heart (and although pain squeezes it just to say it but…)
Maybe she needs the distraction.
So with her mind set on making the best of her situation, Suzume takes a deep breath and knocks three times on the door, wringing her shoulder strap as she waits for it to creak open.
Though extremely excited about being a mother, Kotori was also very, very worried by the prospect. She didn't even know which way was the proper way to hold a baby, and while she'd been informed her child was definitely not a baby, the worry still held.
Would she be a good mother? Could she actually call herself a mother if her so-called child was about her age? Maybe big sister would be a better name... Honestly, she had no idea what she was doing.
She'd been in the middle of putting away some leftovers and washing the dishes (not realising that no, the sink was not meant to be filled with so many bubbles) when the knock came. In her surprise, she almost dropped the plate she was holding into the sink. Hurriedly, she discarded the dish and dried her hands, rushing to the door. This was probably it, after all. Mothering time.
Opening the door revealed a dark-haired girl to her, definitely around her age (and yet still taller than her 'wife'). This was it.
"W-welcome home! I... My name is Kotori, I-- I assume you're my daughter, then...?"

Does your character enjoy Hydread? Is Iunctum very different from their hometown, or just about the same?
Though certainly very different from her hometown and time period of Kyoto in the 1800s, Kotori very much enjoys her new life. As strange as it might sound, she's very excited by the prospect of having a new family, and though the technology is sometimes confusing, she finds adapting to the life quite fun in a sense. There is much she misses about Kyoto, but she looks at Iunctum as a new adventure.

Anzu nodded vigorously — she didn’t care much for how others addressed her, so the honorific felt natural — especially coming from Kotori, who seemed to be very polite, maybe even kind of reserved? Way better than being loud and overbearing, that’s for sure. Peace was good, especially when nap time hits the clock.
"Yeah! Let’s get along and take it easy…" Take care of her though… well, if she buys too much candy, Anzu will make sure to look out for her like a real good spouse would, and eat most of it! Cavities, blood sugar, weight gain, she’d take all those away from her!
Following Kotori’s gesture, the blonde put her stuffed bunny on the chair, and sat on top of it. She usually ate on the floor, so doing this was kind of unusual. “Ooh? Well, I’m not used to these kinda things really, I used to buy stuff for dinner, cooking is too much effort. But..” Taking a bite off the food to get the first real taste, Anzu gave a content thumbs up. Complete victory! “Was your mom really better at cooking? This is the best thing I’ve had in years.”
Family for the lazy fairy used to be an extremely boring subject. Her parents used to nag her all the time, and it wasn’t the funnest of times when they came to check up on her. But from the corner of her heart, she felt like this could end up turning out kind of nice, maybe.
The new topic, however, made Anzu tilt her head slightly. Talking about herself? Kind of like introducing yourself in front of a new class? If it was gonna be like that, then… "Sure, well then… I’m Anzu Futaba, seventeen years old, former idol! I love candy, taking naps, and hate work!" Feeling rather proud of herself, she looked at Kotori expectantly, awaiting her introduction. What kinda work did she do? Maybe she also hated work… double lazy!
Anzu's compliment took a moment to sink in. The best thing she'd had in years...? Surely that was an exaggeration! No one in the Shinsengumi had said that to her, and yet... A warm smile spread across her face, truly touched by the words. "I'm so glad you like it! My family owned a restaurant and mother was in charge but she taught me... I'm so happy it turned out alright..."
Would her mother be proud of her if she heard Anzu's words? Kotori hoped so. She never did get the chance to make her proud, after all. She'd died before that. For a moment, her face fell, but she picked herself back up; that was too heavy a subject to breach immediately. She didn't want to make things uncomfortable.
"An idol...?" She repeated, tilting her head slightly. "Would that be a performer of some sort?" Suddenly, Kotori felt quite unnerved. If she was wed to someone famous, that would be... Quite unnerving. Oh dear. "What is it like, being an idol? I-I won't get in your way, will I?" She was rambling now, but the worry was still there. She didn't want to impose after all, that would be the worst.
"Ah, yes, um... my name is Kotori, also seventeen... I am-- I mean, I was a maid to the Shinsengumi, so please leave the work to me!" She was used to cooking, laundry and cleaning after all; if the blonde across from her didn't like doing that, she'd be happy to take on the responsibility. "I like cooking and origami, I suppose."

Rin’s first natural problem had been to not scare off the patron. That’d be bad for business and for his job. Now he’s trying his hardest not to laugh at the poorly and incredibly flustered girl holding the awful mass of clothes, looking everywhere but him. She really did look hopeless.
He composes himself almost immediately though, settling with a small sigh that definitely didn’t sound like a laugh. Well, he was already talking to her—he couldn’t exactly back out now, hopeless or not. Rin flashes a small smile to settle her nerves. How did customer service work again? He was willing to help, but his eyes were still unconsciously moving towards the horrid assemblage of clothing that could possibly be moving, he didn’t know where to start.
"Well," he coughed, dragging his eyes away from the monster in her arms one last time. "I think starting from scratch is your best bet." He says it playfully, but it’s more than an understatement. This had to go.
He almost motions to that tackling shade of green, but recoils on the realization that he’s not paid to make fun of the shoppers. Instead, Rin motions forward and is walking in small strides to look for something else. He wasn’t actually sure how this worked, come to think of it. It was only his first day—he’d been content with just folding shirts a moment ago. He was probably doing this right, the swimmer thinks, approving nods coming from his manager across the room.
Rin stops to ponder over the key-words his superior had given them. They were pretty vague things; Friendly. Positive, etc. But they were granted to help him out some, he’d figure. Then again, Rin Matsuoka wasn’t generally the overly friendly type. He hopes this one isn’t too uncomfortable in silence.
By this point the swimmer has two different items on hand. It’s a simple white blouse along with a beige skirt, but the frills add to it’s femininity. He pushes it her way.
"This might be more your style, you should try it." He says ‘your style’ without much thought. She is wearing an old style kimono. "Uh. If you want." Yeah, you’re really selling it Matsuoka.
Flushing slightly at his words, she nodded, lowering her head in shame. She wasn't crushed by the revelation that starting from scratch would probably be her best bet, but it was still quite embarrassing! At least the assistant was nice about it, and didn't seem to be malicious in his words. Maybe she wasn't the only one who was completely hopeless about this sort of thing...?
"T-thank you very much for you assistance..."
Of course, it was his job, but still. She trailed behind him, glancing about the shop. She was still slightly overwhelmed by the variety that one store had (and somewhat nervous due to the silence), but if she thought about it another way... This reminded her of her home with the Shinsengumi, on the days the quieter captains would accompany her to the marketplace, particularly Saito-san with his awkward kindness behind a cold exterior. The thought finally made the former maid relax, letting out a relieved sigh. She could deal with this.
"Oh!"
Upon seeing the pieces that the male had picked out, Kotori immediately perked up, almost sparkling. The ensemble was simple, to her tastes, but still pretty, and definitely more up to date than her current attire.
"That looks much better...! Thank you!" It was awkward to bow with your arms full, but she tried nevertheless. Maybe it was too much for simple store assistance, but it truly helped her out. What a kind man.
"Um, is there perhaps somewhere I could try them on, though...?" She hoped such nice clothing would look alright on her; she didn't want to waste them if they didn't, after all.

Feeling at home wasn’t one of the things that would worry a girl like Anzu — well, getting a new family out of the blue would make anyone worry, but for the lazy fairy, adapting to a new environment wasn’t much of a struggle… though living with other people was going to be strange at first for sure, especially since she had been living alone for quite a while.
Her parents owned a comfy apartment in another prefecture, and it was perfect for her you work you lose life plan. In this new universe, such a plan was impossible, so the only thing the idol could hope for was for her new family to let her laze around at home.
As she approached the door, a nice, inviting smell that made her stomach growl reached her nose — homemade food? It took her a while to recognize the scent, having lived off store brought food for the last few years. Holding her worn out stuffed animal close to her chest with one hand, she opened the door with the other, inviting herself in.
Inside, a taller girl wearing a kimono greeted her, politely and nervously. Anzu gave herself a high five on the inside — yes! She looks like the hard working type, that means more time to sleep and take naps on the floor. With a surprisingly cheery disposition, the shorter girl raised one of her hands and got ready to make what she hoped would be a decent first impression.
"That’s right! Nice to meet you, I’m Anzu!" —In contrast to Kotori’s polite greeting, the girl holding the filthy stuffed animal probably looked like she had absolutely zero idea about manners, and she didn’t, in fact. "Sounds great to me, I was starving, plus it looks great! So I take it you’re my wife then?"
Saying it like that made her get the chills, that totally sounded like something you’d hear a middle aged guy say online. My waifu! Calling her Kotori looked like the best bet, huh?
"Wife... Ah, um, yes! I'm your... Wife."
So this was her spouse? She was sure... Oh, this was embarrassing! Anzu must have been the same age as her or thereabouts... But she was so tiny! Kotori made a mental note never to bring it up out loud, just in case. Size didn't matter when it came to personality, after all, and she wasn't exactly the tallest person in the world either. Still, she felt a little bad, and apologised in her mind.
"Anzu-san, then..." She repeated slowly, memorising the name. The name of her wife... Her family. Even if they didn't act like they were married, that didn't change anything to her; the fact that she had a family, ragtag and forced as it was, meant the world to her. She could feel herself getting a bit tearful at the thought, but quickly swallowed back her emotions. She didn't want to embarrass herself so quickly. Save the tears for something less overbearing. "It's nice to meet you, Anzu-san," Again, she bowed politely to the idol. "Please take care of me."
Moving back to the topic of food, she hurriedly pulled out a chair and gestured to Anzu to take a seat, inwardly very pleased by the reaction to her food. "I'm happy you think it looks good...! It's been a long time since I cooked this much... My mother was a much better cook than me, but I hope you'll enjoy it nonetheless!" Mother had always said the way to someone's heart was through their stomach; this probably was a similar principle.
Seating herself across from Anzu, she took a deep breath, calming her nerves. She was pleased that she seemed friendly enough, but the prospect of sharing their lives together was a big one...
"Would you tell me about yourself, Anzu-san?" She asked, after a moment. "If we're going to be married, I'd like to know you better."

It had been a long, long time since Kotori had eaten a meal with a family. Too long for her liking, in all honestly. Of course she enjoyed her time with the Shinsengumi, and eating with the soldiers and servants ensured she was never lonely, but part of her longed to sit down and eat as a family. There had never been that sense of homeliness with the Shinsengumi as there had been with her family; she hadn't believed she'd be able to regain that feeling so soon.
Upon arriving in her new home, she'd found herself alone; new spouse and child either asleep or elsewhere, but that was fine for now. She had something to prepare after all: a home-cooked meal, Kotori thought, would be the perfect way to break the ice and get to know the future members of her family. Of course she was nervous at the prospect, being married off so suddenly, being given the responsibility of "mother" at such a young age, but regret wouldn't change her position; she might as well make the best of it.
It took a while to work out how to use all the strange technology in the kitchen, but soon she was able to at least prepare a decent amount of food (maybe a little too much) for whichever member of the household returned first. Setting the bowls of rice, soup, noodles (to name a few), the sound of footsteps drew her attention; a short girl with blonde hair had entered. Immediately, Kotori straightened up, folded her hands before her and bowed politely.
"I... Take it you're part of the new family?" Judging by her height, she assumed this girl was her daughter, but she didn't want to make any assumptions just yet, just in case. "My name is Kotori... It's nice to meet you!" Unsure of what to say next, she fumbled for a moment, before gesturing to the table. "I, um... I made dinner for us, I hope that's alright..."

Working here wasn’t too hard, Rin thought over, folding the fifth shirt that afternoon. All he’d really been doing was folding and giving incoming customers flashy closed mouthed grins. He hadn’t found it odd when his manager specifically said closed mouthed with a nervous grin. Rin’s unique set of teeth wasn’t anything to sneeze at, and he’s scared off a good dozen people with them. You could get use to them, but..for first encounter customers, he was better off keeping his mouth shut.
Rins’ finished folding the eighth shirt by the time another customer has walked in. His eyes wander to them for a moment, before returning to his task at hand. It was a part of the work description, but Rin didn’t exactly feel like bothering any buyers when he’d just scare ‘em off. He also didn’t feel like talking to anyone in general, if he was being completely honest. Unfortunately, in the moment it took for the teens eyes to go back to the clothes, they’d managed to get caught with his managers—eyes glinting and on him. He did all he could to suppress the groan.
Rin took the opportunity with reluctance, view now on the patron. Taking small strides over, he didn’t fail to notice that said patron looked terribly out of place. Forever 21, where he worked, was usually filled with fashionable and relatively experienced shoppers.
This one, however, walking as if they’d just entered a clown fun-house, looked nothing of the sort. Were they forced to come here? The swimmer watched with mild interest as shopper picked the worst combinations of clothing from the racks. The small mean streak that laid within Rin told him to just let the catastrophe happen, but the look his manager was giving him told him otherwise. Stifling a sigh, he was at the customers feet within 3 steps.
"Are you.." Rin’s eyes travel downwards to the unfortunate pile of clothes in the others arms. He winced. "..managing ok?"
Fashion, Kotori had learned, was very, very different here than it was back home. Apparently, given the whispers she'd heard whilst walking through the streets, she looked out of place, outdated. Personally, though perhaps her simple kimono wasn't the prettiest garment, she thought it was practical and suited her needs, but it was a given that she'd need more than one set of clothes to last her during her life. But of course, the girl had no idea what looked good.
In a kitchen, it didn't matter what you wore so long as it was clean; as a waitress, her kimonos would do; as a maid, well, they'd be getting dirty anyway. Fashion had never been a large part of her life, and so she was, understandably perhaps, nervous at entering a store with so much variety in clothing. Quite frankly, Kotori had no idea where to start.
Drifting deeper into the maze of clothing did nothing to help her. Lifting pieces of fabric, shirts and skirts and trousers, all with colours and styles she'd never seen before, Kotori could scarcely recall another time when she had feel so overwhelmed. There was just so much to choose from!
Glancing down at the luminous green fabric in her arm and wondering if it would suit her, she did not notice the other approach until she was being addressed.
"O-oh! Uhm, yes, I'm fine, I'm-- alright," Another quick glance down at the gaudy shirt she held resulted in a small wince. Perhaps she needed some help. "... Not really," She admitted quietly, holding up her pile of terrible clothing for the boy to see. "I... Don't really know what I'm doing."

The bow’s meaning and necessity was lost on Robin, perhaps this woman hailed from Valm? But the assumption was slim; she had yet eto meet up with anyone from her own realm, so it was safe to assume that her answer was as plain as day. Out of respect, awkwardly so, the dove haired mage bowed back. Was that alright? Hopefully?
Her keen smile dissipated at the brunette’s next inquiry. She…she really did have a point.
"Ah…well — perhaps you can double back from aisle to aisle?" It seemed like a viable option anyway…
"D-double back, right..." Repeating the idea posed by the other, Kotori mulled it over in her head; certainly, that would be a good idea, but truthfully... All the aisles looked the same to her. The signs, too, confused her; she hadn't even heard of some of the things listed above.
And she'd thought the streets of Edo has been confusing enough... This was a whole other boat altogether. She honestly didn't think she could do this alone.
"Um, ma'am, I hope it's not a bother to you, but... May I humbly request your company whilst browsing here? My sense of direction isn't exactly the best, and this-- this is all very new to me, so..."
"Is killing your spouse truly such a popular idea...?"
Valuing family, real or not, is important, isn't it?

Mixed feelings of being paired with surrogate parents and a future spouse stuck in the back of Dolphi’s head, troubled about what to do when she would meet them. Considering her age, she was going to be with them for awhile; she should leave a good impression that she wasn’t a troublemaker or anything of the sort. If she drew them a picture, would they like her? Drawing did sound like a fun thing to do to pass the time until meeting her family.
The female kicked her legs as she sat on a bench in the middle of a park, scribbling on a piece of paper with a variety of crayons. Dolphi’s worries temporarily left her mind, and a faint smile replaced her usual neutral expression. The young girl recalled the imagery of a sun setting over an ocean’s horizon, dying the vast sea several shades of orange. She grabbed an orange crayon and doodled from side-to-side, and after growing slightly impatient, she increased her coloring speed to fill in the uncolored parts. Nothing could go wrong with drawing—or so she thought until her orange crayon unintentionally flung out of her hand and hit a passerby.
"S-Sorry…"
Dolphi almost didn’t have the courage to look up at who she accidentally hit.
Getting to know the city, alien and slightly terrifying as it was to the poor girl, was one of Kotori's top priorities. It wouldn't be much of a life if she got lost every time she left her house, after all. And on top of that, she might come across something she could give to her new family as a way to break the ice; small gifts perhaps. You never knew until you went.
Wandering had eventually led her to a park, and to her joy, getting to here from her home wouldn't be a long trip. She decided to file away the location, just in case; parks were the perfect place for festivities after all. It was a peaceful moment, until she felt something hit her side. It wasn't painful, but surprising enough for her to let out a squeak regardless. Once recovered, she stopped down and picked up the object -- a crayon, in fact. And nearby, the child who probably owned it. Judging by the apology, it hadn't been intentional, however.
"It's alright. This belongs to you, doesn't it?" Holding out the crayon, she smiled gently to try to relax the child. "Are you drawing a picture for someone?"

Robin couldn’t have been of too much help either. But Naga be damned if she didn’t at least give it a shot; besides, community and helping hands seemed to be the best and only tactic to use if she and this lot wanted to live comfortably in Hydread — despite the awkwardness and the mystery of it all.
So the former tactician sidled over to the newcomer and looked around herself. Whatever this person was looking for in this…Walmart? Inference told her that this seemed to be a market of sorts.
"Oh — !" A tap on the other girl’s shoulder, and Robin motioned to the banisters strung up from the grey and steel warehouse ceilings. "Those signposts. I think you find what you’re looking for with those."
A small squeak of surprise escaped her at the unexpected touch, leading her to almost drop her basket. Honestly, she should have been used to people surprising her by now, but perhaps she was simply doomed to never hear people come up behind her. Oh well.
"Hm?" Following the taller woman's motions, she felt almost embarrassed at not noticing the signs posted high above. Looking at them made her feel slightly nervous, in truth (what if they came crashing down?) but it was a start at least. Turning back to her saviour, she gave a short bow, smling gently, murmuring a "thank you very much", before turning back to the signs, when a new problem occurred to her.
"Erm. Is there a sign that shows you the way back here...?" She did not trust her sense of direction, and this place was far, far, bigger than any other market she'd ever been to.

Being plunged into a new place and assigned to a family would probably be terrifying for some; for Kotori, though there were certainly elements of that fear, and of missing the Shinsengumi, she was also happy. After all, she had a family now, the opportunity to life a life like that once again. What more could she want? To celebrate, she had decided it would be a good idea to cook a hearty meal as a way to get to know her future family.
"Ah."
Except well. She'd never been in a supermarket before. 'Culture shock' would probably be putting it lightly. Basket held tightly in her hands, the poor girl could do naught but gape at the sheer amount in here.
