‘Home’ off to a good start in the box office

The new Dreamworks Animation film Home released overseas this weekend to a limited market—only nine places. It brought in 19.2 million over the weekend, and in the UK it achieved a strong 9.3 million, topping the weekend box office and making it the best opening weekend for a DWA film besides the Shrek franchise. The film also beat Insurgent at the box office in Russia.

While this UK debut wasn’t as good as the international box office success How to Train Your Dragon 2—which got just over 13 million—it solidly outdid the Penguins of Madagascar film, which only made a little over 2 million.

Home, which is the first CGI film to star a black character, is considered a fairly big gamble for DWA in a time where their financial successes have been faltering. The company recently dealt with a large amount of layoffs and closures as a result of recent performance, and Penguins of Madagascar (their most recent release) failed to make its budget back.

Home debuts in North America (its domestic market) on March 27th.
