AO3 does not live in “the cloud” because that is other people’s computers, and other people’s computers are vulnerable to censorship.

AO3 is on its own computers. It does still have to be housed somewhere, and I suppose a determined enough hater could try to find that place and go after it, but it’s a lot harder than sending spurious complaints to Amazon or whomever going “BadWrong things are hosted on your cloud service!”

Owning the servers is a core tenet of OTW/AO3.

When people involved with AO3 talk about “the cost of servers” they don’t mean “the cost to pay Amazon for space on their servers.” They mean, like, the cost to physically own them, and eventually replace them with new ones. And the operating costs to run them.

AO3 is not “in the cloud.” AO3 is stored on physical machines that the OTW owns.

While this is not a solution that can work for everyone who wants to deal with controversial content, it is why AO3ple sneer at alt-righters who complain about getting thrown off hosting platforms.

So I saw a photo of this hexagon tile floor . . .

The blurb said the shot was taken in Granada, Spain, by Agneta Fondén.  No other info, so I have no idea how old, etc.  There's a game (from 1988) that uses a similar pattern on one of its pieces, but this could predate it by at least a thousand years  — or not.  But the pattern intrigued me, so I made a texture map and used Blender's geometry nodes (no generative AI) to set up a hexagon grid with random rotations for the tiles:

That's all done with a single design:

You'd think this would have a name, right?  (For its historical use as an architectural / decor tile — although I've found out more about its use in games, that's not what I'm looking for.)  Like the Penroses do (and no, it's not one of those).  But I've had no luck finding it, or any other info.  Any (human only, please) help?

elder cat to good home in philadelphia/delaware valley area

hi tumblr, i am making a follow up post to the previous one. bowie has been successfully adopted out to a household that he likes much more than ours, hooray! now, we need a loving home for china. here is the situation;

my wife @soldier-exclipse and i do cat-sitting and cat-boarding to make extra money because living nowadays is, ha ha, expensive. a couple of months ago we received two cats, china and bowie, with a normal stay duration. bowie was his own bag of worms, but to make a long story short, their mom surrendered them to our care because her new apartment only allows one pet and "she couldn't bear to pick between the two of them".

we are trying to get china to a no-kill shelter but that takes time and vet appointments we need to save up for to get her a clean bill of health - at the bare minimum, another two months. my wife and i do not have the extra money in the budget to take care of another cat. we can board because boarding makes us money, but just on their own, everything is tight enough as is with my other cat's heart failure costs that we really cannot financially afford taking care of china.

if you would like to take a 10-11 year old cat into your home, please feel free to contact me over tumblr dms and we can hash something out. china is quiet and friendly, does not claw, bite, or climb onto keyboards, loves getting her tummy and chest rubbed (she will latch onto your hand with claws retracted), and will likely spend all day lounging in whatever sunbeams are available. if you cannot take her into your home, the next best thing would be sharing this post so we can hopefully reach someone who does.
