Cross-hilted Sabre

Dated: circa 1780-88

Maker: Bland : St James’s, London

Culture: British and Turkish

Medium: steel, iron, cloth, brass, gold, ivory, silver, wood, parchment

The sword features a steel hilt and an egg-shaped pierced pommel lined with red cloth. It is engraved and pierced with scales and chased with beads. The carved ivory grip has a spiral fluting, silver gilt nails and silver gilt wire. The the curved steel blade is one-edge, while the scabbard is made of wood and white parchment.
