Different types of fractures: ☑️ Open (compound) - broken bone that is in communication with the environment through the skin that is penetrated; bone & skin are at high risk of infection due to the fact that it is exposed. ☑️ Closed (simple) - broken bone does not penetrate the skin. ☑️ Compression - collapse of a vertebra that may be due to trauma, or weakening of the vertebra; seen in patients with osteoporosis, osteogenesis imperfecta, lyric lesions from metastatic or primary tumors, or infection. ☑️ Stress - tiny cracks in bone cause me by repeated (rather than sudden) mechanical stress; common in weight bearing bones of the lower limb & foot. ☑️ Avulsion - occurs when a fraction of the bone tears away from the main mass of bone as a result of physical trauma. ☑️ Greenstick - one side of the bone is broken & the other is only bent; occurs typically in children. ☑️ Transverse - the fracture is across the bone at a 90° angle to the long axis of the bone. ☑️ Comminuted - break or splinter of the bone into more than two fragments; usually occur after high-impact trauma such as car accidents. ☑️ Impacted (buckled) - fracture where one bone end is wedged into the other bone end. More fractures: ☑️ Stable - broken ends of bone line up & are barely out of place. ☑️ Oblique - when the break has a curved, or sloped pattern. ☑️ Spiral - result of an extreme twisting force being exerted on a bone; usually occur when the body is in motion while one extremity is planted. ☑️ Delayed Union - fracture takes longer than usual to heal. ☑️ Malunion - healing of bones in an abnormal & less optimal position. ☑️ Nonunion - broken bone that fails to heal. ☑️ Pathologic - caused by a disease that weakens the bones. #premed #premedlife #medicalschool #medschool #medicalstudent #medstudent #paces #médecine #medicina #medecine @medschoolstudent
