I thought I'd gotten used to losing people

I care about the most.

Ever since I was little,

I learned that nobody stays.

Never.

People slip through my fingers like sand,

nothing to hold on to,

an endless cycle I can't break.

Some stay with me longer,

some shorter,

but they all go.

I thought I'd gotten used to it,

but it still hurts every time,

a stab in the back,

unprepared,

my heart shattered by every goodbye.

My mind builds walls around itself,

doesn't want to let anyone in,

but sometimes my crippled heart whimpers

and lets in someone who I know won't stay,

and every time I wonder: am I the reason?
