Yoo it’s been a while followers but I am back on this train. Been meaning to make more art and post more often. There’s a lot happening in this chapter and I almost wanted to do like a complicated montage of everyone fleeing Shadar Logoth… But I enjoyed this quiet moment of Perrin getting dunked in the river. I love the suspense of this chapter though, it’s an absolute page turner.
Mat showing exceptional judgment of character by trusting a guy named Mordeth who won’t step out of shadows. Also setting himself up for a lot of future content.
The full text for this scene takes up like a whole page so instead you get Moiraine quoting some quality lore.
I realise I’ve unintentionally been increasing the number of panels in my comic pages but I should probably dial it back from nine (I just wanted to fit this scene on two pages).
Get ready for Shadar Logoth, my favourite of all suspiciously bad sounding cities. I always loved the idea of Shadar Logoth, it’s just one of those imminently cool worldbuilding setups.
I started one of the Schoolism courses for environment design the other week so I think it would be nice to revisit this at the end of it and see how I can make it better (the scale is still a bit wrong for the book description but I keep telling myself these are learning exercises and not to get too hung up on them).
There should be many more horses in this scene but y’all I’m done with horses for the moment please free me.
Still here doing the chapter project, just took a break for a bit. This page languished on my iPad for a while because I hated it after I started inking it so I redrew the first two panels and liked it a lot more. Also trying out some different rendering styles. I love Moiraine’s stone cold intimidation of the Whitecloaks in this chapter, it’s beautiful.
A few quicker sketches of Nynaeve and her wonderfully expressive face. I think I was probably ambivalent to mildly annoyed by her angry, blameful persona in this book but she definitely grew on me as the series progressed. It’s interesting to see characters grow and confront their own flaws and insecurities.
Also have I mentioned I love the pencil brush in Procreate, it’s the best.
It’s time for FORESHADOWING and GIFS. As soon as I knew this chapter was coming up I wanted to draw all the boys. I’m sure Min doesn’t have her viewings as pictograms but I like to imagine what if. I remember loving this sequence when I first read it, getting goosebumps at all these future hints, but in retrospect I wish some scenes weren’t foreshadowed. When you build up something for so long it can make it feel perfunctory when it actually happens.
There’s so much journey and heartache ahead for all these characters. I was flipping through A Memory of Light the other day and for all my waxing and waning interest in the series it was still emotional to see it all come to an end.
It’s everyone’s favourite unhinged flamey face, Ba’alzamon. I always enjoy repeat readings of The Eye of the World because of how obvious some reveals are in hindsight. He has a great speech in this chapter that makes his true nature quite evident if you know what to look for.
Also Rand’s “I suppose he looks good to women” is strangely hilarious to me, it’s ok to use your eyes Rand, just admit the guy is handsome.
In which our country friends get their first experience of life outside the Two Rivers. Tried a looser inking style just so I’m not doing the same thing all the time. Also this might be the first time I’ve ever drawn Perrin? Gotta remind myself not to draw a beard yet haha.
Oh Egwene, little do you know this is just the beginning of a very long journey for you. I always enjoyed the imagery of this scene between her and Moiraine, just the two of them having a quiet moment sheltered in that tree branch hovel.
I keep meaning to mix these up with some looser sketches but hahaha now I have set a baseline for myself… how can I go back now (not that I don’t enjoy these more complicated pieces, they just take longer and I have forty chapters to go).
Not a lot happens in this chapter except everyone is on horses, so I must accept my fate of having to draw horses. Still, this was kind of fun to do as a bit of an action/landscape piece. I was going to have more panels but decided that this was enough for one day, and there are much more exciting chapters on the horizon.
Gotta hand it to Egwene she ain’t gonna be left behind when there’s adventure to be had.
In which Moiraine has a history lesson for angry villagers. Had some lighting fun in this, also hit the Procreate layer cap but it’s good to know I can get decent comic pages out of my iPad. There’s no text tool so y’all get my suspect handwriting though.
The lore-building in the early books was always some of my favourite content. I love that you could just feel the weight of the past and how the world had changed. Also heraldic eagles are pretty cool looking, you should go check ‘em out.
More prop practice, this time with Moiraine’s angreal, the ivory woman. Still getting use to how Procreate’s layers and mixing works but I’m pleased with how it’s holding up versus my Photoshop workflow. It’s also nice to do some simple painting exercises.
TIME FOR THE BEST LADY MOIRAINE. Re-reading these has given me a new appreciation for how great Moiraine is, honestly.
In which things go spook in the night. I had a lot of fun doing this up as sequential panels so I might try to do more chapters like this!
Although there are many more exciting things happening in this chapter I decided to practice with props instead. I was curious if a real life counterpart to Tam’s heron sword exists so asked my partner (who knows more about swords than me) what he thought it was, based on only the book description, and the closest we got was a kriegsmesser. I suspect that Jordan probably based them off katana though.
I heard a whiff of Wheel of Time news the other week (could it be? Someone is finally putting the series into live action?), which always stirs some nostalgia in me. I could also do with a good drawing project, so I thought I would delve back in to the Wheel of Time chapter project I started what feels like eons ago. The challenge was to draw something from every chapter, and there are 52 chapters + prologue in this book so if I can get through all of them I will be pleased as punch.
To ease into things here is a quick sketch in Procreate of everyone’s favourite gleeman, Thom Merrilin.
