Brielleâs return smile was unfairly cautious. âIâm sure weâll have plenty to do.â
Another nerve struck. Alesha pursed her lips, âI suppose Iâm getting a bit ahead of myself, arenât I?â
âHe probably wonât. He took the exit very personally.â Brielle shook her head. âIâm not upset. Iâm just a little tired of all the shit, honestly.â
âWell, hopefully thereâll be none on my end,â she smiled, âIâm more than excited to start working with everyone. You, especially!â
âHe left,â Brielle said, decisive and firm. âLeft a note, left for good. I think thereâs plans to hunt him down, but Iâm not privy to them, yet.â
She frowned, âIâm sorry. I didnât want to upset you. I was curious. Az never talked about him.â
âI would absolutely do my best. Maybe heâll let me take a look at it.â Brielle sighed. âItâs a touchy subject for him.â
âI donât doubt it would be, I hear heâs a musician, that must hurt.â She sighed, âWell, whenever he lets me cross that bridge-- sooner rather than later I hope-- Iâm glad I can come bother you for some help.â
And here, she was curious, âWhy did your old doctor leave?â A beat, âDid he even leave at all?â This was after all, a guild of killers.
Az is feeling petulant. He shrugs. âWeâll see.â
She sighs, she doesnât want to argue. âI donât want to see you--â she purses her lips, âJust donât die, ok?â
Brielle frowns. âNo. Evariste wouldnât let me help with his little machines, ever. Right bastard. But Iâll help with what I can.â
She sets the knife aside with a clack that was far more irritated and sharp than she meant it to be. âHe was replacing bits of himself with Dwemer metal. His eyes, his hands. I wasnât shy about how unsettling it was. And he hated my jokes, my nickname for him. We werenât on what Iâd call âgreatâ terms.â
âOh,â she wrinkled her nose at the thought, âHis eye?â She wouldnât ever thought of doing such a thing, âWell, Iâd like help. I need to be able to fix Maksimâs hand if anything needs replacing. And Iâm sure youâd be able to help.â She smiles.
Felnyx sits back and lets the healer does what sheâs meant to. âI always used to just forget to eat, but now Iâm living with a chef. Iâve had three meals, but it feels like all Iâve done since I came here is eat.â He laughs, and contains a smile until the question of drugs comes up. âTwo, three weeks? As soon as Iâd gone and killed that first guy, I was too nervous to leave my house even to get the drugs. Believe me, it was hell. And worse than the first time I tried to quit. Itâs easing off now but Iâm still getting a pounding headache. Wine helps, for some reason but I canât afford to be drinking all the time. Donât want to end up replacing one addiction with another.â
Aleshaâs seen the sort before. Skooma addicts, trying to find one more thrill to ride out whatever awful memories they remembered. And in the time sheâs spent on Solstheim, it wasnât hard to empathize with the poor fetchers who turned to the sugar for a quick escape.
Some cleaned up in time, realizing their mistake in the reflection of a crying mother or spouse. Others.... well, not so much.
âYou donât need me to tell you to be more careful,â she warns, as she flips through another book, much older and battered, âWeâll have to start cleaning the body of the sugar, sometimes you donât notice the withdrawals until much later, or it manifests into other annoyances, like your headache.â
She makes a few notes in her journal, âCome see me later, Iâll prepare something that will help, and then tomorrow, we can start walking through getting you clean. It wonât be easy, of course.â
[She patiently endures the prodding.] I donât think I have a choice, do I? But, no, I donât mind. Go for it.
Well, I donât want to think Iâm forcing anyone to answer! But it is for your health, after all!
[ she lists down a sundry of questions; was she sexually active? did she catch any diseases? What about drinking, smoking and drugs? Other dangerous habits? Old injuries? Chronic illnesses? Underlying diseases caught as a child? It was a thorough list, and Alesha believed that a more complete medical history helped paved the way for a better medical future. ]
âSure, though it depends a bit on what you want.â Brielle accepted the knife back, then lazily flipped it open. Sure, she was showing off a bit, but who wouldnât want such a pretty lady admiring them?
âIf itâs complicated and needs planning, Iâm the one to help. If itâs a normal thing, youâd want to bother Rugar, my brother, our smith. Heâs not Brotherhood but he helps out. If itâs woodworking or the like, though, youâll have to commission a carpenter somewhere.â
Alesha was fixated on Brielleâs hands and how they worked the blade.
âThereâs a fellow here with a mechanical hand,â she blinks back to reality, âDid you help in building that? He wouldnât let me examine it, heâs embarrassed about it, I think. Anyway, I was wondering if youâd have the plans for it still. Or... anything your old doctor left. Iâm working with... nothing. Azarath isnât helping.â
âAbsolutely honest, I promise.â
He has no qualms about answering personal questions any more, heâs been through this routine time and time again. Sometimes he got an itch or a rash after sleeping with someone hygienically questionable, and that was nothing to be ashamed of.
âFelnyx, not any more but I used to be very, a few in the past but they were all treated, yes, yes and yes, frequently but I want to quit the skooma. Anything else, doctor?â
She was actually surprised at how forthcoming he was, âWell, hmm,â she notes it all down. Heâs answered everything, honestly, she hopes and she supposes that will have to do.
âWeâll now move onto physical examinations. I need to make sure thereâs nothing abnormal, you will need to be at the peak of your health. Come,â she gestures for him to sit forward, as she presses and tabs and rubs different parts on his body. She hmms and mmms after a while, nothing everything down, measuring lengths and girths and everything else.
âWell, well, Serjo Felnyx, it looks like youâve come a long way. Quitting something as addictive is skooma is difficult, but already, thereâs effects of it on your body. I recommend getting a more balanced diet, see that our chef prepares you something. Of course, youâll also need some exercise and training, get your strength back.â
She examines his face, turning it this way and that, checking his eyes and mouth, âNow, how long ago since youâve done skooma?â
âLater on?â He balks. âMy recovering head injury isnât going to degenerate my long-term memory over time; I donât think thatâs how that works. Iâm not exactly senile.âÂ
She raises a brow, and lets out a sigh, âLetâs not get ourselves tied into knots. Fine, weâll do it your way. I wonât argue about this any further. But you have to be a little more careful now.â
Did you know that healers and seamstresses are the funniest occupations? They always leave people in stitches.
[ she actually laughs at that ]
Alright, Iâll give you a pass on that one, you fiend!
"Are you the doctor? I was told to come for a physical examination or something."
âAh yes! Youâre the newblood. Well, certainly newer than I am, come in, have a seat.â She gestures to a wooden chair, as she goes off to grab a book of records. Flipping through the massive book, she happens upon a new page, and readies her quill with ink.
âNow then, Iâm Alesha. I want you to be absolutely honest with me when weâre speaking, yes? This is very important.
Letâs start with some questions. First off, whatâs your name? Secondly; are you sexually active? If yes, have you caught any diseases? Do you smoke, drink or use drugs? If yes, how often do you partake in these activities?â She lists off questions upon questions, some completely too personal for a regular conversation, but one can see Aleshaâs maintained a very professional front.
âMy long-term memory is fine. Itâs the new memories I canât fucking keep in my head.â He narrows his eyes; heâs getting agitated.Â
Stubborn, as always. He was probably as stubborn as her, and she can see the agitation in his eyes. He was still easy to read.
âDonât dodge the question,â she spoke softly, calmly, âIâm worried. I want to help you. Your long term memory may be fine now, but itâs not going to stay that way forever. We need to work on this now so you donât end up on your face later on.â
Az raises his eyebrows. âIâve had people taking notes. Iâve been getting better. Youâre a little late to game on this one, Al.â
âYou have to start writing down the other parts too, like where you were born, whatâs your full name, your birth date, where youâve lived, the people you know and how you know them. Even things like what youâve had for dinner and who youâve spoken to.â
She frowns, âThis is only going to get worse. When was the last time youâve had someone write something down for you?â
What do you suppose I do? You should have seen me a few months ago.
Sheâs frustrated, and horrified, her chest burns with anxiety and when she speaks, she uses a tone that a Temple Elder might have used on a young initiate, âAzarath Ivithri,â her eyes were focused now, âWeâre going to have to work on this. I cannot bring your memories back, but we have to put a system in place to help you remember better. Do you have any scraps of paper to write reminders? Perhaps one of the newbloods to become an assistant? Help me out here.â
You said â [Az pauses for a moment, brow furrowed. He tries for a moment, but heâs clearly used to this enough for it to be frustrating, but unsurprising.]
Shit, [he breathes.] No.Â
[ huffs ]
Azarath.
This is a problem.
Have you done anything about it?
