naija is one of the daughters of the wiggins family who are the richest and most influential family in iron river. growing up in the spotlight hadn’t always been easy for the family who were always put up on a pedestal and needed to be perfection when they were anything but. 

her mother had struggled with her own demons for a long time which included addictions to shopping, alcohol, and pool boys who continuously came and went. they’d hire a new one until her father caught wind of them being found all over each other by staff and they would go. while not entirely guilty himself, her father was a little more discreet with his own issues and worked hard to ensure that they appeared as perfect as they could on the outside. 

at the age of seventeen, naija was taught a lot about the business in the hope that she would take over. her father even attempted to set her up with another influential family’s son but the dating, despite her own growing feelings, failed almost immediately. 

she grew up being reminded of the hard work that was put behind their wealth and how it could all be taken away in a blink of an eye, thus making her humble and ways some of her entourage wasn’t. Still a child, her interest laid more with partying and enjoying her youth rather than taking over the business. Especially after she was involved in a car accident that her parents covered up, never to be spoken about again.

A deal was made with her father where she would attend college and be given those years to enjoy her freedom but afterwards, her focus would be on the business and working towards one day taking over. unfortunately, for him, the taste of freedom had been a little too sweet for her to stop entirely. 

if the many years of pretending to be perfect and putting a smile on her face had taught her anything, it was how to fool people. her father included. she showed up to every meeting when he called despite being strung out or hung over.

“If I knew where the decent guys were, then I wouldn’t be in bars.” She said before laughing, it was kind of funny, in a, not funny at all way. She thought she’d had a nice guy one, then again once more, and both times turned out less than nice. Maybe it was just that her picker was broken. “I was on tinder once in like, NYC, and let me tell you, worse idea of my life. I swear I almost got kidnapped about a dozen times before I deleted it because I valued my life.” No one was ever who they said they were, and most of the time, it was a horror story rather than well, what it should have been, a fun night out. “On all the TV shows, if you complain that your chest hurts someone always takes that super seriously, so there’s an idea.”

          “I feel like bars are the last place you’re going to find a decent guy. They’re more likely to be in a relationship or in coffee shops.” Maybe she was a little delusional and reading too much romance novels but this felt like the last place to find a decent guy. “You’re more likely to find a guy that also asked out a bunch of girls before he got to you.” And maybe that was her thing but it certainly wasn’t hers. “Are you serious? I’ve never had that type of bad experience. A lot of dick tips in barns.” She didn’t know why it happened there but she figured the guys worked too much to just be sitting in bed texting a girl with their other hand around their genitals. “Sounds like a good plan. “To be truthful with you. While I am relieved that you’re not much younger than me, I was actually worrying if I was aging like milk-” Benji trailed off with a light laugh. He wasn’t the type to put much stock into his looks and aging. It was only in the last year or so, since Dallas passed away, that he was more cognizant of the fact that he wasn’t getting any younger. It’d only be a matter of time before all of the vices caught up to him, even if they weren’t necessarily vices but more like hobbies at this point. 

“- which, sounds arrogant, but that wasn’t my intention. I am flattered at the compliments, though,” he said with a quick wink. Benji paused at Naija’s next question. Was Trav single? He quirked a brow as he considered it. “Hm, jury’s out on that one. There’s a 50% chance he’s single. I’ll have to let you know about him. As for me, I will carry bags for every old grandma in need, but not just any pretty lady. Only the nice ones that are walking without a boyfriend within the general vicinity – I value my teeth. Which, leads back to you: I’m not going to be hunted down at a later date, right?”

“Curdling? I think you’ve got a few good years in you before you’ve got to worry about that. I wouldn’t have pegged you in your mid-thirties either.” It had become evident when he told her a little bit more about himself that he was older and had lived a life filled with a big career and a lot of touring so she’d put the pieces together and decided that he was older than she was but not by too much. “Have you lived here your entire life?” She asks casually, wondering if perhaps she would have heard of him if he had. 

“Fifty percent? That sounds a little sketchy. Is it because he’s been seeing someone and they break up often or he’s in a relationship and out of one with different girls every other day?” Naija was never a girl that liked to fuck around and be casual, she wanted to be in love and a small part of her wanted the whole fairytale. Her life was anything but that and she seemed to attract people that were not into relationships. “For carrying my bags? No. Nor would you be if you were actually doing something worth getting your teeth punched in like hitting on me or asking me on a date. So, you’re fine.”

OUTSIDE THE DOG BAR WITH ANYONE

          If you’d asked Carter a few days prior, he’d tell you that he was strictly a cat person and had been all his life. But after unintentionally becoming a foster home to a small, lost and/or stray dog, he’d taken quite a liking to the miniature creature. His cat… not so much. The small dog had approached him the day before, running across the busy main street and narrowly missing an oncoming car before Carter scooped him up to safety. With no collar, and no indication of a missing owner nearby, he’d taken the dog home for the night, much to his cat’s dismay. Now, he stood outside The Dog Bar with fliers in one hand and tape in the other as he taped a flier to a lamp post. “You don’t happen to know whose dog this is, do you?” Carter asked the passer-by, motioning towards the flier and then to the dog at his feet, who sat patiently beside him. He’d bought the dog a leash, a bed and some food at the local pet store; wanting the pup to be as comfortable as possible until they found his owners, however long that might take. “I figured putting these up outside the only dog friendly bar in town was a good move.”

           Naija wandered about until she stopped to someone putting up a flyer to the pole. She craned her neck to see, hoping it was news of a party or cool place that was opening up. Instead, she found a picture of a pretty.... hideous dog, or maybe it was just the angle that she was looking from. When he talked to her, she straightened up and moved closer to stand beside him. “Oh. From where I was looking at this thing, it looked all kinds of ...” She stopped and flashed him a smile. It was cute. “I don’t think so but it’s a cute dog. I would just keep it which I know is sad for the owners but I haven’t seen any other poster looking for the dog.” Not that she’d paid much attention to them anyways. “How long have you had him? How’s his temperament?” if the dog was an asshole, then it explained the need to put flyers up.

     Jalen laughed, but fuck — It hurt. The burning pierced through the bandages Freya had wrapped around him, her voice echoing through his mind. We need to get you to the hospital, please. He had responded, no. A few days of rest would be fine, but his mind wouldn’t let him do so. Instead he keeled over, laughing again. “Fuck the insurance...” He repeated, vision beginning to go blurry. “Welcome to America, baby. Land of the free.” Jalen coughed, this time spluttering blood onto the wall besides him. “I’m fine.” 

Except he couldn’t move, his knees were giving in. Something was wrong. He needed to go home. Did he even have one? The hand on his side peeled away gently, carefully moving down to his pocket to check for keys. They made a noise, he could feel them, “I just need to get back to the apartment—” He huffed, head shaking. “No, Nai— You can’t.” There was no time to explain, “Just … enjoy your night, forget you ever seen me.” It was easier that way, for him and for her. One last time, he laughed, “Few broken ribs didn’t kill nobody.”

He tried to reassure her with a smile, hand moving straight back to his side. “I’ll be good, I promise.” He wanted to tell her that his grandmother was in hospital, the last connection to his mom, but there wasn’t enough time. Jalen promised. He was already breaking it, “I’m good Nai. I’ll go sleep it off …” With a nod, he pushed himself from the wall and took a step, then two. They were hobbles more than anything, blood was still dripping from his mouth and then he turned to look at her, perhaps for the final time. “Goodb—” Which is when everything went black.

            He was pale. Sickly, and frankly, he looked like he was a walking dead man. It was enough that she could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she reached for her phone to call an ambulance. At this point, she didn’t care what he wanted and whether or not he could pay for his hospital trip because being in debt was better than being dead. “Jalen, I don’t think you’re in a position to argue anything.”

The bright red specks of blood that came out of his mouth was enough to have her opening her phone and dialling. “Stop, you can’t go anywhere.” She began to argue, stepping towards him when he moved to leave. Her feet stopped, bringing the phone to her ear in time to see him fall to the ground and collapse with smears of blood on his mouth. As the phone collided with the ground, she did the same but alongside his limp form. “Someone call an ambulance!” She screamed.

It had been days. She visited the hospital every day after having put down her credit card for insurance. He never woke up and the doctors weren’t sure if he would but recommended letting him rest as much as possible. The only saving grace she had was that her father hadn’t figured out where she was or seen the bank statements since she hadn’t been charged yet. Walking into the hospital again, she stopped as a nurse walked up to her and warned her that he was awake. Given that she’d lied to the staff and told them she was his girlfriend, she was naturally updated on his status. 

With a deep breath, she knocked on the door before entering. Even though she’d seen him these last few days, she was never prepared for the way her body reacted to the sight of him with wires all over. “Jalen,” she cracked out, tears prickling her eyes. “How’re you feeling?” She managed once she wiped at her face.

Thirty-two. Benji mentally sighed in relief. So, it looked like he lived to drink and act as he usually did another day. He smiled briefly at the thought, then looked down as she considered the number he gave. The surprise in Naija’s voice, made him shrug. It always flustered him whenever people seemed impressed by his career decisions. He was much more accustomed to the complete opposite and had a whole repertoire of jokes to reply with. People who were impressed? That was too rare to have jokes for. 

It seemed Naija had enough jokes for both of them, though. Benji snorted a laugh and shook his head. “No, no. Don’t check ebay, or have me sign your boob. I play bass, so my autograph is niche and not coveted. Now, Travvy, that’s our lead singer. His autograph is worth something provided it’s able to be preserved.” 

“He also has the most groupies. So, don’t worry. You’re plenty special. I wouldn’t carry bags for groupies if I had them,” Benji shrugged. He actually did have a couple of groupies during the Hellscape days, but he also had a girlfriend the first couple of years. So, by the time that was over with his groupies had all moved on to more available bass players in other bands.

              “I’m not that much younger than you, don’t worry.” The girl said with a laugh, wondering if he’d been fearful of the age difference despite they were doing nothing other than walking and speaking. “It’s when it gets close to or over ten years that it’s freaky.” She’d known a few people who had big age gaps and Naija was one to judge in that regard. Nevertheless, they were closer than that, at least she expected. 

“Bass. Not as impressive but you’ve got to be the most attractive out of the band. That might bring up your signature a bit more.” Pulling out her phone from her back pocket, she decided that she would look at google to find a picture of them. “I mean.... your lead singer isn’t that bad looking either. Is he single?” While Benji was cute too, he didn’t seem interested in her that way. “Maybe you can get his signature for me then.” 

Now she was teasing because she actually didn’t need to pawn out their signature for more money. “That’s nice then. I’m sure you’d carry bags for any pretty lady or old grandma walking down the street. You may not be the most popular out of your singing group but you seem like a gentleman.”

“Sometimes, I think nights like these are better for forgetting than they are for remembering. I can’t think of one good guy I’ve met at bar.” She shrugged, she also didn’t give them any effort, so maybe it was on her, but it was what it was. “A catch and release moment, if you will.” The brunette laughed, mostly at herself, because she was kind of painting herself a certain kind of way, but here she was. “I can get behind that.” She nodded, before shaking her head, “no, think about it. A doctor might be better than anyone here.”

          “Actually, you’ve got a point.” It took her a moment but now she was convinced that she had never met a decent guy at a bar in her life. “Where are the good guys then? The library, coffee shops? They’re certainly not here or on tinder.” The hell-app that she was trying to get rid of but otherwise she didn’t know how to meet people. “I mean I wouldn’t mind a doctor because of the money alone but how do you meet one? Should one of us run in front of a moving car or make up an injury? Maybe sit in the emergency waiting room until someone notices us?”

Zek gave her a puzzled look. “Is that supposed to mean something? Going against the Wiggins?” He wasn’t from around here and if he was honest, he couldn’t possibly care less about who the woman was. She had seemed nice, but the weird name drop she did like she expected him to know who she was was a lot. “Is that like some sort of big evil chemical company, like Monsanto, and I’m like supposed to be scared or some shit?” Zek chuckled, he cracked himself up. “If that’s the case, I think the cat guy should’ve been more like scared of you.” He nodded, “But I believe you, seem like the type that couldn’t do anything wrong.”

           “It doesn’t mean anything.” Naija said with a smile, knowing that he must have been somewhat that was new to town and hadn’t visited half the businesses and big monuments that were named after her family. When he mentioned the weird evil company, she laughed and nodded her head. Sometimes it felt that way. Her father made it feel like it was something that should earn them respect or make people be threatened but Naija found it refreshing that people didn’t know her. “Something like that, yeah. But nothing worth even discussing.” Once he agreed with her, she smiled big. “So, you’re new to town, I’m guessing? What brings you here?”

    The change in temperature knocked him to the side, vision turning blurry for a few dangerous seconds as his shoulder found a wall. The same one they stood next to, screaming at each other all those months ago — God, he wished they could do the same today. Instead he sucked in a sharp breath and let his face fall into a stoic stance, one that absorbed the pain going through his body. He heard her, he just couldn’t turn around before getting outside. Not enough solid objects and putting his hands on folks, well that never went down well.

Jalen knew she would follow, but he wished she wouldn’t. He wished he was fast enough to run, but he could barely shuffle out of the door before she intercepted the hobbles. He coughed into the crease of his arm, Jalen spotted blood. Again. “What’s done is done,” Wiping it away, he used a hand to steady himself and stood up almost completely straight. “It doesn’t matter, Nai. Just go enjoy your night…” Through a strained jaw, he let out a small wince and wondered why the world was spinning. He hadn’t drank too much. A few pints, nothing more. “Doctor?” Jalen laughed and it hurt. He coughed again, which made it hurt worse and now, he was keeled over trying to regain the strength to stand. “Ain’t got insurance. I’ll be fine.”

He had lost his job. Walked out on it, didn’t get any perks from the illegal stuff and explaining what happened only prompted more questions. He would get through it. He just needed to get home. “It’s nothin’, I promise…” The pounding in his head suggested otherwise, but Jalen couldn’t afford to think about doctors. Not right now. “Couple of broken ribs, black eye, nothing I haven’t had before.” He offered her a smile, one that made his eye water. “I deserved it. If you’re wonderin’, I did deserve it.”

           The brunette knew that she should have walked away. There was something pathetic in the girl when it came to the man in front of her. Some sick little sliver of hope that never could make her fully cut the cord and walk off. Perhaps she would have had more courage to do so had he not been battered and beaten. Even if she had issues with her lack of self-control, she wasn’t completely heartless enough to ignore him when he seemed like he’d topple over at any instant now. 

“Fuck the insurance.” The eldest Wiggins argued. Sure it would cost him an arm and a leg but that wouldn’t matter if he were dead and at this point, he looked like he was a walking corpse. “I’m not going to have a good night if I’ve got to worry that you’re going to pass out on the corner of the street and no one is going to be around to help you. You shouldn’t even be out. What are you even doing?” It was one thing to drink the pain away but in the middle of a bar? The self-conscious part of her head instantly went to the assumptions that he was out to meet someone. 

When she moved closer, she reached out in case he would fall over because she wasn’t convinced that he could stand on his own two feet much longer. “I’m going to take you home because you shouldn’t be out.” Maybe she’d convince him to go to the hospital and put her credit card on his file. Her father would have a stroke but she would figure out how to deal with him later. “I’m not disagreeing with you deserving it or not but you .... you shouldn’t be upright with those injuries.”

“At our age? How old are you?” Benji laughed. He had a feeling they were not the same age, and that he was older than her. And, well, if he wasn’t actually older than her then maybe the alcohol had caught up to him after all. Rock and roll, he thought with a wry smile. 

“I guess famous for the genre. We’re no Ariana or Beyonce, but it’s been over a decade since we played in a basement. I think one of the bigger shows we headlined was,” Benji paused, mind going over a few different arenas that Hellscape performed at, “65,000.”

Saying the number out loud made him frown. Was that bragging? Was that a lot or was it modest? Benji didn’t really know. He did remember that particular show, though. His frowned turned wistful for a moment at the memory of the crowd’s roars and the rumble of the bass under his feet. It was a far cry from the quiet of the small town, but at least the company was nice. “Always a bonus? So, you have other people carry your bags? And here I thought I was special.”

          “Thirty-two.” She said as she looked him over, figuring that he may be a few years older than her but nothing more than that. He didn’t appear to be any older than thirty six but maybe she was wrong in that regard. With certain procedures, it was hard to say who was what age anymore.

“65,000.” She said with raised brows, clearly surprised by the number. She expected two thousand or something of the sort. “So you’re popular then. Obviously I’m not well informed when it comes to that genre but i’m impressed. Should I get you to sign my boob or something? I don’t have any pieces of paper.”

It would have been preferable if she had a piece of a receipt or something but she’d have to hunt for that at the bottom of her purse. “Maybe I should check on ebay to see how much a signature of yours goes for. If it’s enough, I’ll have to hunt down a nearby cafe for a napkin and get something concrete to hold onto. I’m guessing it’ll be worth a fortune in a few years.” Maybe she should be worried that people would snap pictures of her having him hold her bags but he didn’t seem too worried about it. “You can be special if you want but you’re the one with the groupies so unless I’m special to you, I can’t make that promise.”

“They’re not thinking with their thinking brain.” She said, in simple explanation. She couldn’t even count on her hands and feet all of the shitty pick up lines, or gross things that men had tried on her over the years, and worse, she didn’t want to admit to how many times she didn’t care and pretended to be impressed and went with them anyways. “What’s a decade or two?” She laughed, “I’m sure it’ll be next week. Honestly, you won’t care by the end of the night even.” Let it come and let it roll. If she held onto every weird thing that’d happened to her– fuck, she wouldn’t be able to function. People were weird. “If one’s a double and the other is a lets keep going, that’ll get us to forgetting quicker.” Charlotte grinned at her, “depending on how soon you need that courage.”

          “Their thinking head.” She nodded her head in agreement with a slight shake of her head. Half the time she wasn’t sure how men were able to do half of what they were because she felt like they were the lesser gender in all the ways. “By the end of the night? Now that’s the one I want. I need to forget everything by the end of the night.” Likely wouldn’t happen but she could settle for care then. Luckily for her, there was someone who probably wanted to forget the story more than she did. “I think we also need to make a rule that we take a shot each time someone tries to talk to us tonight. Then again, we might end up in the hospital and that isn’t the way I want to go.”

“Rephrase, not the lawyer type. You gotta really do something terrible for me to want to the effort of finding a scumbag in a suit.” Zek believed that most shit could be solved with some conversation and the belief that sometimes you had to own up to the part that you played in where you were in life. Plus, he’d had enough of them from his own brief encounter with the law. “Aren’t there like all kinds of lawyers too? So I’d have like, what, find a tort one? I think the lawyer that was my defender at court is retired now. Plus, that was in Chicago.”

          It was good to know but part of her also wanted to tell him that she’d be using her father’s lawyer who were on big retainers, but she didn’t want to get into detail about who she was and who her father was. “There’s a bunch of lawyers.” She nodded her head. “You can maybe plead your way into getting someone who would find pity on you and take your case for free but the effort would be too much. “Then again, if they heard that they were going up against the Wiggins, who knew what type of lawyers would come out of the woodwork in the hope for a big win. “I mean, look at me, I could do no wrong so chances are you’re not in need of one.” She winked, smiling more to herself than him.

     He made a promise. It was broken. At least time, he didn’t walk in on her and on this occasion, he would attempt to leave without her noticing. Fortunately it was busy and the liquor numbed the throbbing in his head, the stabbing in his side; people had been eyeing him all night, curious, cautious even. The swollen purple bruise on his cheek, the cut above his eyebrow and painful grunts that came with every step, it wasn’t every day folks saw someone like him.

His grandmother was sick, a few days left. It was his brother who got hold of him, some stern words and an abrupt hang up tugged on what was left his heart. She was a good woman, wholesome, kind and everything he could have been. Except, he chose a different path. Much like tonight, finishing up the last of his glass before struggling to rise from his stool, breathing out a pained moan as his feet hit the ground. 

Jalen had been jumped, four days before. Travelling around didn’t make him many friends, leaving a wake of destruction in his path and two months on, it was finally catching up to him. He didn’t go to the hospital. Or to the cops, this was his punishment and he would accept it. After all, it hurt less than watching himself break the woman he was trying to avoid. 

Moving was painful, but it was made even worse by everyone else crowding in. He winced. He sucked in the need to groan, but with his head down and swollen eyes to the floor, Jalen moved swiftly until he thought it was safe. It wasn’t, of course. She was in front of him. His heart stopped. “Sorry, m’am —” Jalen groaned an apology, not hovering a moment longer and hobbled into the safety of the night sky.

           Naija had spoken to his siblings now and again, casually brought Jalen up in conversation in the hope of knowing where he was and whether he was okay. Despite promising her that he would leave town, she hadn’t actually expected that she would not see him again. Especially without some type of goodbye. Just another reminder that she wasn’t nearly as important to him as he’d been to her. 

The last person she expected to see when she went out with friends was him. She would have expected to see her father on the dance floor before Jalen, especially with a look of twisted pain on his expression. Naija froze when he stood in front of her, feeling like her chest would cave in on itself if she breathed any quicker.

She must have not moved because he seemed to go around her and vanish, at least until he turned and then followed out after him. There wasn’t a plan in mind. The shock had worn off and she was angry, annoyed, hopeful, maybe. She didn’t even know what she would tell him when she caught up to him and yelled his name. 

The girl pushed past a few people, saying sorry to another group of individuals, until she found her way in front of him again. “Jalen.. What are you....” Her voice trailed off when she got a good look at him. Her brain short circuited because she couldn’t even think of anything other than whether she was seeing things. It seemed that the more she looked at him, the worst his injuries were. 

“What happened to you? Who did this?” She gasped, moving close to him to try and see his face and whether or not his nose was broken or his eye could open. “Did you see a doctor?”

“No it doesn’t.” She said, but the other kept going, apparently it did get worse, and as the other continued to talk, Charlotte’s jaw fell slack. “What the actual fuck.” Was all she could get out, “I mean, I have been on my fair share of tinder dates, that have gone horribly wrong, but I mean, that’s at the top of the list even for me.” The grimace that fell on her face was subconscious but it was there anyways. “I don’t think all the alcohol in the world is going to make you forget that, but I mean, doesn’t hurt to try.” She almost laughed, but Charlotte found herself wanting to forget it too, “I think tequila is a good place to start.”

          “I don’t understand how some guys are able to look at you and say half the shit that they do and not realize how disgusting they are?” Naija said with a shake of her head as she shuddered a little bit. Despite being desperate for love, mainly because she was riddled with daddy issues, she wasn’t that desperate. “Probably not. I’m going to be scarred for life after that but I’m hoping when a few years or decades past, I’ll be able to talk about it and have it be funny rather than outright disturbing.” A girl could wish. “Tequila is the best place to start. Should we start with two? One to forget and enough to give us courage to continue?”

“I used to be, then I joined a band,” Benji said with a little shrug. That was only a half truth. He was a hit with his mother’s friends until he turned twelve and slightly unruly. Then, he got shipped off to the US at fifteen and that divide only grew. Benji was fine with that, though. Just like he was fine with walking alongside a stranger and carrying her bags. There could be worse things, he thought as she smiled at him. 

“Naija,” he repeated so he wouldn’t forget. “The feeling’s mutual – and not quite. I carry things to and from the bus to the stage, but not many bags.           “A band? I didn’t know people joined bands at our age.” Naija said with a smirked since it seemed like it was a childhood dream that no one really managed to achieve. “Is this a famous band or a band that you play in your friend’s basement with the foolish hope that you’re going to get discovered one day?” The latter wasn’t her poking fun at him but being realistic because there was a lot of people who needed to hear that their dreams wouldn’t happen. 

“Oh, so you play on a stage? Well, that sounds promising. How big is this stage?” Maybe she just lived under a rock and didn’t know who this man was. But he didn’t have a car (apparently) and hadn’t he mentioned something about a bus? “I always let people carry my bags. I tend to have a lot of them but it’s always a bonus when it’s a hot, strapping man doing it.”

Charlotte wrapped her arms around the girl without question. She’d been there, she’d done that. And she’d had more than one step in fake stranger boyfriends every time a tinder date went wrong, she was catfished– if it could happen to a person, the brunette was sure it had happened to her. The hug over, she stayed in place, “excuse me but what?” Her jaw fell slack, “he has six cats?” She shook her head, “no girl.” She couldn’t even imagine, though she could. “And his grandma?” She paused, “yeah no. Count me out. Count you out. You don’t need that in your life.”

         Naija wanted to believe that she’d been in a daze when he’d mentioned his cats and nodded because she’d misunderstood him but she had heard and she was present. It was all a mistake and no amount of loneliness was worth having to deal with his six cats without mentioning the old lady. “I know. It gets worse.” Naija grimaced, clearly ashamed of herself. “He named the cats the days of the week and was missing Sunday which he was planning on getting.” Her head shook as she looked at the bar. “I need something strong that’s going to make me forget all about that.”

It wasn’t a threat, or really anything but the truth. Spencer had worked hard to get where she was in the world, and she wasn’t willing to sacrifice it, and the last name attached to the woman across from her would not be used as something to sway her. Spencer was steadfast when it came to hard decisions. “Yes. You’ll go to lab, get your blood drawn, then they’re run it and we’ll go over the results together to see where you are at.” Spencer glanced back through the chart, it was incomplete. She sighed. “How long have you been on birth control, if you are? Sorry, the charts aren’t fully updated. Also, we’ll need to talk through if you’ve ever had any surgeries that aren’t on this file, as they can complicate things.” Spencer paused and took a seat. “We use hormones to help with the follicle measurements as well as ensure that you don’t drop any eggs, the body is only primed to drop one at a time. We’d want to get multiple. Then there is another injection to help mature them for freezing. The body does all this naturally, usually, but it’s only built to do it once and over a few days. We’re trying to schedule it and maximize our numbers. I generally like to collect eggs from women who have issues with carrying their babies or when they are nearing the end of the of their season to carry. I’m not a fan of invasive measures for the… ease of it. There are more chances for complications.” Spencer nodded. “I’d like to start with a whole hormone panel, see where your levels are at, then we should check out to see the health of your system.”

           Naija nodded her head when she began to explain a little bit about how things would go. The blood test likely was the easiest part and though she knew that this was a good idea for her future, she still felt a little uneasy about the potential of finding out something she didn’t want to. People found out daily that they were ill and had perhaps waited a little too long when signs began to pop up. She did not want to be one of those. “I’ve been on birth control since I’ve been fifteen and I haven’t got off of them since.” It had started to help with her period but then she became sexually active until... “Well, I guess that’s a lie because I did fall pregnant but lost the baby. It was relatively early on and I don’t know exactly how it happened. I know there was a period of time where I missed a week or so due to different things. No surgeries apart from medication to help with the miscarriage” Now she felt her heart race a little bit. “This is a lot of information.” All that she’d asked for though, “How long is this entire process? A year or maybe two? Given that there isn’t complications, of course.” It was possible that there could be but she was young and as far as she knew, relatively healthy.
